Kyosho Space Ball R/C Chopper: Spaceballs: The Helicopter

Children are masters at breaking toys. They also have a doctorate in getting themselves hurt. Kyosho’s remote-controlled helicopter mitigates both tendencies with one feature. The entire thing is inside a spherical plastic cage that protects both itself and the people it will inevitably hit. Better a slight bruise than a nasty cut.

If the company’s name didn’t clue you in as to where this toy is from, its bonus feature will. It has an atomizer, so you can put perfume in it and spread the fragrance around. Because that’s what every toy helicopter has been missing all along.

You can order the Space Ball on Kyosho’s online shop [JP] for ¥6,279 (~$79 USD). Perfume not included.

Mega Man Bobble Heads Bobble on By

If you’re a fan of Mega Man (or Rockman if you live in Japan), then you’ll definitely want to put down your NES controller long enough to grab this set of cool and bubbly Mega Man Bobble Buddies.

mega man bobble heads

These 3.5-inch-tall bobble heads capture the spirit some of my favorite Mega Man characters, including Elec Man, Proto Man, Guts Man and of course, Mega Man himself. Now they need to make a Sniper Joe bobble head to go with. You can pre-order them over at Entertainment Earth for $34.99(USD) for the complete set of four, and they ship this November.

On a totally unrelated note, have there ever been Bubble Bobble bobble heads? There really should be.

CarBot R/C Car Driven by Tablet or Smartphone

Over the years, I’ve seen more than a few remote-controlled toys that use the iPhone or other smartphones as their controller. Several of these little devices have come from a company called DeskPets. DeskPets is back with another cheap remote controlled toy that uses Android or iOS devices as the controller.

deskpets cartoy

The new toy is called the CarBot and it is available in four different colors including red, blue, green, and yellow. Each of the different colors operates on its own infrared code allowing up to four of the cars to be used at one time. The car features a battle mode that lets players challenge each other and even fire virtual rockets at each other to take down their opponents.

The CarBot also has a maze mode that allows players to set up a maze for the toy to navigate precisely. It also has a personality mode with sounds and lights as well as a mute button for noiseless play.

The little CarBot is able to race at up to 2 feet-per-second, and recharges using an integrated USB connector. It takes 40 minutes of charging for about 15 minutes of play. The CarBot can be purchased now at Brookstone, Best Buy, and Toys “R” Us stores for $29.99 (USD).

Dalek Plush Baby Toys are Too Cute to Exterminate Us (or Are They?)

If there’s one word you don’t usually picture when you think about Daleks, it’s “cute”. But these plush Daleks are the cutest Daleks I’ve ever laid eyes on.

plush daleks 2

They’re made by crafter Fassbaby out of 100% acrylic baby yarn (sounds cruel),  stuffed with fiber fill, and are safe for infants who don’t know how evil a these cyborgs can truly be. They come in a variety of soft and soothing colors, and are just the thing to keep future Time Lords on their toes. Also, these are the only Daleks I know with jingly-jangly, timey-wimey bells inside of them.

You can find the Dalek plushies over on Etsy for $18 to $25(USD) each, depending on size. Grab ‘em up before Davros rises from the ashes of the Crucible, and commands them to exterminate us all.

Desk Pets CarBot now available for $29.99

Desk Pets is a company that makes all sorts of small remote-controlled toys. Some of the first products offered from the company were shaped like little bugs. The last product we talked about from Desk Pets was the TankBot that we reviewed late last year. The company is back with a new toy called the CarBot that is now available.

Desk Pets has announced that the CarBot can be purchased in retail stores, including Brookstone, Best Buy, and Toys “R” Us. The company calls the new toy the world’s first micro-robotic toy car, and the little car is available for $29.99. Like most of the Desk Pets toys we’ve seen, the CarBot is controlled by an app running on Android or iOS devices.

The car has some interesting special features, including a battle mode that allows multiple players to battle using infrared sensors. The car also has a maze mode allowing players to set up a maze that the toy can navigate on its own. CarBot also has a personality mode with sound and lights as well as a mute button to play in silence.

When the car is placed in Drift ‘n’ Race mode, the little toy can reach a speed of 2 feet per second. The car has an internal rechargeable battery and charges via a retractable USB charger built into the product. Forty minutes of charge time gives users 15 minutes of play time. There are four different colors of the car, including red, blue, orange, and green each operating on their own frequency allowing up to four to be played with at one time.

Romo smartphone robot back on Kickstarter

Last fall, a little tank treaded robot turned up on Kickstarter called the Romo from Romotive. The Romo used your iPhone as its brain to control the tank base to allow the little bot to perform all sorts of tasks. The team behind the little robot is back on Kickstarter right now looking for more funding.

The developers want the additional funding to help make the robot smarter, faster, and easier to use. The team says that they have redesigned the robot from the circuit board up and then set up production at a manufacturer in China. The developers are now trying to raise money to improve the software and are seeking another $100,000.

This next-generation Romo robot is described as “almost” everything a personal robot should be. The developers say that the new bot is cute, responsive, and really fast. The developers want to use the money raised to develop software to allow Romo to perform two-way telepresence, computer vision, autonomous navigation, and facial recognition.

The team says that with funding the new features will be released as updated apps. The team also promises to wrap a SDK around each function allowing developers to create their own apps to share. A pledge of $150 will get you one of the first next-generation Romo robots. So far, the team has raised $42,931 out of its goal of $100,000. The team has 28 days to go so it’s very likely they’ll get the money they need.

Sphero gets an improved, multifunction Drive app, we go hands-on

Sphero gets an improved, multifunction Drive app, we go handson

Just about a year ago we got to review Orbotix’s Sphero, and while it was an amusing little remote control orb, its controls left a lot to be desired. A couple months ago, the company gave Sphero some new firmware that included the “Vector Drive” feature, which eliminated Sphero’s meandering ways and gave it far more precise steering. Now, the company has improved its Drive app and combined it with the old Sphero and Cam apps. This new version of Drive has a tool that lets users aim the ball with a single finger — a small, but welcome improvement over the old, fidgety two-finger method. Additionally, the app has a new Auto Heading function that keeps Sphero aware of the orientation of its controller to provide a much more intuitive driving experience. After giving it a go ourselves, we can attest that it’s a marked improvement over the prior iterations of Drive. We no longer had to plan out Sphero’s routes, and we could drive feeling confident that the ball would roll as directed. Check out how the refreshed controls work in our video after the break.

Penbo Lovable Penguin

Love makes the world go round, or so that is what we have been taught to believe. Well, some of our friends in the animal kingdom are easily lovable without much effort on your part, such as puppies, kittens, and of course, penguins. It is not going to be easy keeping a pet penguin in your home due to the kind of special environment that it needs to thrive in, which is why if your little toddler has been bugging you for a pet penguin for his or her birthday, you can give in to that request – without getting a real penguin. Still, the $59.99 Penbo Lovable Penguin is one lovable bugger, as Penbo interacts with you through touch and sound.

Not only that, there is a surprise-colored (pink, blue or green, although we would have liked to see the entire rainbow range) Bebe which will pop out from Penbo’s stomach pouch (is this some sort of penguin-kangaroo hybrid that we do not know of?), playing games with one another to boot. Penbo is capable of chirping and dancing around, and just like some of the more modern toys, will be able to communicate and interact with Bebe and other Penbos too. Best to get rechargeable batteries in your home if you want the Penbo Lovable Penguin to be a permanent fixture, as it runs on half a dozen AA batteries.

Build-a-bear’s new store concept wants you to choose, love, stuff and fluff with high-tech (video)

Buildabear's new store concept wants you to choose, love, stuff and fluff with hightech

If little Johnny thought Build-a-Bear had nothing for his tech-savvy toddler sensibilities, he’d better think again. The plush toy-seller has just launched a new high-tech store concept that it hopes will help re-engage children otherwise distracted with tablets, phones and game consoles. The new additions include a 55-inch interactive digital sign out front, with touchscreen and Kinect functionality, complete with unlockable content via barcodes. Once inside, four Samsung SUR40 smart tables loaded with custom software offer a range of different parts of the teddy-making process, as well as interact with the toys in real-time — like a virtual bubble bath — thanks to a purpose-built tagging system. The sound side of things also gets a lick of paint, with six audio “zones” created, using ultrasonic speakers that can target sound to specific parts of the store and stop all the collective noise from reverberating like something from a bad dream. The first such shop is already open in St Louis, with five more locations to follow: Pleasanton CA, Annapolis MD, Troy MI, Fairfax VA and Indianapolis IN between October and November.

Game of Thrones Collectible Figures: A Song of Ice and Vinyl

I’m a huge fan of Game of Thrones. As a matter of fact, I’m going back and watching all 20 episodes again with my wife, now that she’s convinced that it’s an awesome show as well. But when I think about the series, it conjures up visions of backstabbing, blood, gore, violence, and sex. What I don’t think of are cute desk toys. That said, I still want all of these.

game of thrones daenerys targaryen

The guys over at POP! have come out with a series of big-headed, bug-eyed versions of some of the main characters from HBO’s award-winning fantasy-drama. Their goofy disproportionate, squared-off heads actually kind of remind me of Betty Boop for some reason.

game of thrones ned stark 150x150
game of thrones khal drogo 150x150
game of thrones tyrion lannister 150x150
game of thrones the hound 150x150
game of thrones whitewalker 150x150
game of thrones daenerys targaryen 150x150

The series includes 3-3/4 inch-tall vinyl figures of Daenerys Targaryn (with a tiny dragon, of course), Ned Stark (complete with head), Khal Drogo (infected wound sold separately), Tyrion Lannister (surprisingly the same height as all the other figures), the Hound (complete with sibling-induced facial burns), and a White Walker (I thought they didn’t exist.)  Though I really was hoping for a King Joffrey that I could throw darts at, or a Viserys Targaryen with a custom-fit gold crown.

The whole gang is coming out this December so you should be able to have them in your hands in time for the holidays. Winter is coming, after all. Pre-order them now over at Entertainment Earth for $9.99 (USD) each.
