Although the 2013 International Home + Housewares Show has come and
gone, the convention’s 2,000+ exibitors from 35 nations left us with a
massive hoard of innovative goodies. While there’s no way that I’d be
able to share everything that was presented in Chicago’s ultimate new
product party, but here are a few especially cool things that caught my
eye at this year’s event:
The arena of geek fashion has evolved far beyond the domain of
pretentious, pabst-sipping sods. Geek Chic is no longer a
self-referential term used by people who are trying to sound like
intellectuals. Rather, it’s a wide, all-ecompassing term which
incorporates a wide array of fashion and design choices. Far from being
something ironic, it’s a celebration of all things geeky. Today, I’d
like to hit you with a dose of that geeky fashion: video game controller cufflinks.
Human beings have a primal, unshakable fear of the unknown. It’s
something that’s been hard-coded into us by evolution: back when we were
all living in the treetops, the dark places of the world held a whole
host of predators ready to tear us limb from limb; the deep night was
one of the most dangerous times of day. The most skilled, masterful
horror artists use this fear to great effect: the human imagination is,
after all, an incredibly powerful tool. In other words, the less you see of something, the more frightening it is.
That’s the whole basis of the virtual reality game "Deep Sea."
