The Way Kids Used Machines 100 Years Ago Is Shocking Compared to Today [Collection]

Kids these days, swiping and tapping away at iPads, have absolutely no idea how to fix a mechanical spindle. But until around the Great Depression, children were free to work in factories alongside adults. More »

Lalaloopsy – Singing and Dancing Sensation?

The chill is in the air and you can just feel the holiday season approaching. I like to organize my holiday shopping so that most of it is done by Thanksgiving, this year I seem to be lagging a bit behind as it seems more than a little slow in the toy department. There are a few new items on the horizon and I’ll try to keep you informed.

First up is the brand new Lalaloopsy Silly Hair Star Doll, if your little girl likes Lalaloopsy, she’s gonna love this talking, singing AND dancing doll. The newest addition to the Lalaloopsy collection, Harmony B. Sharp will entertain your little girl by telling jokes and singing and dancing to five classic kids songs with a Lalaloopsy twist and lets not forget about her madcap spinning hair and twisting headwear.

When Lala is not performing on her included stage, she will speak and sing to your child while she is being held, and also in tow, is her lovable pet kitty. The Lalaloopsy collection is based around the legend of magical rag dolls that come to life as their last stitch is sewn, and offers miniature playsets, dolls and an interactive website with bios, games and webisodes.

Lalaloopsy Silly Hair Star Doll is just silly enough to catch on, while I simply can’t imagine the appeal, my daughter already wants one. (go figure) The doll is articulated, takes 4 AA batteries and sings different songs depending on which of the six included hair pieces she’s wearing. Of course all this ridiculousness doesnt come cheap, but you can have one for around 60 bucks from amazon.com. I strongly encourage you to watch the video, and then tell me… who comes up with this stuff?

Pigs with toys are happier, produce better bacon

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so what happens when you give a pig a toy for it to play with while it is being fattened for the slaughterhouse? I suppose those green piggies from the Angry Birds franchise would be able to appreciate such a plaything, as they would then leave the birds’ eggs well alone. As a result, they would be slaughtered and green slices of bacon (theoretically, anyways) would be served up, being tasty to the last bite. That is what a pig welfare group in the UK are doing, investing up to £100,000 in chews and toys for the animals, claiming that doing so results in less stress, producing tastier meat along the way.

One of the bigger hits among our porcine friends would be the plastic gizmo called the Porcichew, where our fattened dinner on legs are able to swing on in circles like children on a roundabout. Less anxious pigs release less of the stress hormone known as cortisol, which in turn affect muscles – and the quality of meat directly. It is said that pork from stressed pigs end up looking paler and softer. Hmmm, I’d better take a closer look at my bacon slices the next time round…

Admiral Ackbar Talking Plush

I guess you can more or less say that Admiral Ackbar’s most famous line in his Star Wars “career” would be, “It’s a trap!”, when he realized that his fleet of Mon Calamari cruisers are outnumbered and outgunned by the Imperial fleet of Star Destroyers. Well, you can now bring home a cute version of the good admiral himself in the form of the $29.99 Admiral Ackbar Talking Plush, where he comes across as a Star Wars Celebration 2012 exclusive. All you need to do is give this cute little plush a nice squeeze, and Admiral Ackbar will then blurt out his signature phrase – as long as the batteries inside last, of course. Do bear in mind that only limited quantities will be available, as once they are sold out, the only way you can get your hands on one would be to look out for it on a second hand shop or via online channels.

To make sure it retains a sense of authenticity, there are the words “Star Wars Celebration VI” printed on the bottom. The Admiral Ackbar Talking Plush measures approximately 8″ in height.

A Bloody Sawblade Makes for an Awesome Children’s Toy [Toys]

It looks like it’s straight off the industrial saw at a meat processing plant. But this bloody toothed sawblade is actually a harmless children’s toy. Instead of deadly steel, it’s made from less-deadly foam that flies like a frisbee when tossed. If someone doesn’t see it coming there’s thankfully no risk of it lopping off a limb or cleaving their skull. And at just $5 it’s positioned perfectly in the “this will probably be destroyed in 15 minutes” price range. [ThinkGeek] More »

Attacknids Battle Bots to the fore!

There is nothing quite like seeing robots slug it out in a messy fight with one another, and this is what the £69.99 Attacknids Battle Bots are all about. Forget about the stuff that you see on the silver screen such as Transformers and Real Steel, you can use your imagination with the Attacknids Battle Bots right in your living room itself.

The Attacknids will sport full 360º rotation and a fully synchronized ‘walking’ action, so that there is no need to rely on sneaky wheels, while the intuitive control system will enable you to change direction as well as tactics in a jiffy, responding in an agile manner so that you will be able to gain the upper hand in a battle at that crucial moment.

Sporting a Bolt’n’Battle weapons system alongside ‘exploding’ combat armor that goes flying when registering a hit, you can be sure that this is as real as it gets, without having to go back to a workshop and fix everything up thereafter. It will take three direct hits to the Battle Brain command centre in order to disable the Attacknid, signalling the victor in the process.

Having said that, Thinkgeek might have just the thing for you if you want to recreate the Beggar’s Canyon scenario right there and then in your living room.

You will be able to zoom around with these Star Wars slot car kits, where you can choose from Death Star Attacks and Battle of Endor sets. These are professionally done and well-detailed, boasting 1/32-scale models and will retail from $99.99 to $149.99, depending on the set that you choose.
