Toshiba announces USB adapter for TransferJet technology

transferjet-adapterThe folks over at Toshiba must be on to a good thing here – they have just announced an adapter which will be able to play nice with the TransferJet close proximity wireless transfer technology, and not only that, this particular adapter will also feature an USB 2.0 interface that makes it compatible with a whole lot more devices. This particular adapter is already on sale in Japan at various electronics retail stores, and will arrive in a couple of models – one with a Micro-B-type connector that is more often than not found in modern day smartphones, while the other happens to be a Type A connector that is commonly used when it comes to the world of personal computers. Either way, folks using both devices are more than used to seeing either one of them in action.

Toshiba has big plans for this particular adapter, where they hope to use it when it comes to exchanging image and video files between a smartphone and a personal computer, not to mention the ability to do so between a couple of smartphones to boot. Toshiba is also mulling over the very real possibility of using it when it comes to kiosk terminals, so that interested parties will be able to purchase video files at such kiosk terminals, as well as transferring such image files to printers sometime down the road.

So far, no manufacturer’s suggested retail price has been put forward, although there has been speculation going around that the expected retail prices of the Micro-B and Type A models happen to be ¥4,000 to ¥5,000 (approximately $38 to $48, respectively, and you will also be able to pick them up as a set from ¥8,000 to ¥9,000. We are all for a greater level of connectivity between devices, and just so you have an idea on how speedy file transfer speeds are with TransferJet, we are looking at a maximum transfer rate is 560Mbps (effective transfer rate: 375Mbps) over a range of 3cm, now how about that?

Toshiba bakes TransferJet file transfer and wireless charging into touchscreen kiosk, charges phones and credit cards

Toshiba bakes TransferJet file transfer and wireless charging into touchscreen kiosk, charges phones and credit cards

In an effort to make Toshiba’s TransferJet more… business, the company revealed a touchscreen kiosk that allows you to buy (and immediately download) music, videos and more. Just in case that alone wasn’t enough, the kiosk, which is adorably petite, also uses NFC to pair the device and (if you have the appropriate account or software) pay for downloadable content. The kiosk even throws in Qi wireless charging for your handset as you select, buy and download that new anime episode. Of course, if you don’t have wireless charging (or TransferJet to grab the downloads in the first place), you might not get the most out of what Toshiba’s offering here, but the idea is to place the device in places like airports and convenience stores, where people are likely to have time to kill and want something to watch or listen to right away.

Toshiba’s TransferJet adapter does high-speed video transfer from micro-USB, smartphone chip coming next year

Toshiba's TransferJet adapter offers highspeed video transfer from microUSB ports, builtin chip for smartphones coming next year

Toshiba’s TransferJet has kept relatively quiet since we got the full explanation (spoilers: high-speed data transfer over very short distances) on stage at CES 2013. Finally, several Toshiba products are now ready for launch. Alongside a compatible SDHC card, there’s also has a new micro-USB adapter that plugs into your (Android-only, although Toshiba are in discussions with Apple) smartphone, enabling those much-faster-than-Bluetooth data speeds over a distance of a few centimeters. It worked without a hitch on the show floor here at CEATEC, and the TransferJet duo is set to go on sale this December.

Toshiba’s spokesperson added that pricing for the pair of adapters will come in at around 10,000 yen (around $100), although it was the tiny chip sat next to it that really piqued our interest. Toshiba is planning to get its TransferJet tech embedded within smartphones and other products in the future, which could make a far more convincing argument for the file transfer technique. One module chip has been given a December production date, although the company wouldn’t spill the beans on exactly which devices we’ll see it in.

Toshiba to show reference design for SDHC card with TransferJet at CES

Toshiba to show reference design for SDHC card with TransferJet at CES

SD cards won’t be generating the same feverish hype as other gear breaking cover at CES, but nevertheless, Toshiba’s let the world know it’ll be bringing a new one to the show. The company won’t have a finished product to flog, but instead will be exhibiting a reference design for an SDHC card with TransferJet technology. For those unfamiliar with TransferJet, it’s a high-speed wireless transfer technology for sending and receiving files over short distances. While it isn’t used nearly as much as its transfer protocol peers, hopefully it’ll find some work to do if and when Toshiba takes its card from design to product.

Toshiba SDHC Memory Card With TransferJet Capability

tosh transferjet Toshiba SDHC Memory Card With TransferJet CapabilityToshiba is said to be showing off their SDHC memory card at the upcoming CES 2013 event that is set to happen in less than a fortnight’s time. Well, what is so special about an SDHC memory card, you ask? This particular one from Toshiba will be slightly different than the rest, considering how it will be equipped with the TransferJet Wireless Transfer technology.

The Toshiba SDHC memory card on reference display is said to be still a product under development, where it will integrate a TransferJet transceiver IC, a coupler, an RF filter, peripheral passive parts, an SD bridge connection circuit, and Toshiba’s NAND flash memory. All data transfer by TransferJet communications will be implemented in devices that offer support for SDHC memory cards, and these will include (but are not limited to) digital cameras and PCs, where using it is as simple as inserting the card into the card slot.
