10-Foot-Tall Cardboard Optimus Prime: Boxes in Disguise

What do you do with all of those boxes left over from your countless Amazon orders and other cardboard lying around your house? Don’t just throw them into the recycling bin. Do like this guy did, and build a giant badass robot. Like this one. Yep, this is a 10-foot-tall Optimus Prime made out of recycled cardboard.

Well, cardboard, glue and masking tape. This ‘Cardboard Prime’ was built by Pwarner184, who obviously knows how to work cardboard into geek magic. The shaping of the cardboard is great, and I love how he did the details with masking tape. This is truly papercraft on an epic scale.

If any cardboard Decepticons come anywhere near this house, there will be cardboard flying everywhere as Optimus Prime defends his turf. The only things this robot fears are rain, mildew and perhaps an industrial shredder.

This Shape Shifting House Is a Transformer That Hides in Nature

This house in the San Juan Islands of Washington hides itself in nature and reveals its transformer abilities depending on the day. There are floor to ceiling glass walls that can be exposed. Or can be made to be completely open. There is an extendable deck. There is a bathroom roof that can be raised away. Hell, even the interior walls can be re-arranged. It’s a house that can change its personality according to nature. More »

Transformers Metroplex Stands 2-Feet-Tall: It’ll Be Hard to Disguise this Giant Robot

One of the cooler toys to rear its head at the 2013 New York Toy Fair was this gigantic new Transformer, which stands a whopping 24-inches-tall.

This bad boy is based on the Titan-class Metroplex, and can transform into two different configurations – a giant wheeled battle platform with helipad, and the Scramble City battle station.

It’s loaded with cool features, including eyes that light up, a projectile launcher, sound and voice effects, and even articulating pupils in its eyes. I also love how his head converts into a turret.

Hasbro expects to launch this gigantic Transformer this Fall as part of the 30 year anniversary of the franchise, and it will retail for$125(USD). So kids, start saving your pennies now.

Funny thing is, while 2-feet-tall is the tallest official Transformers toy released, the actual Metroplex is estimated to be as much as 800-meters-tall (about the same height as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai) – if he actually existed, that is.

Hasbro’s Toy Fair 2013 booth tour: Transformers, Furby rockers, Iron Man and more

Hasbro's Toy Fair 2013 booth tour Transformers, Furby rockers, emitting Iron Man and more

Oh, the wondrous experience that is Toy Fair. And that particular experience, as you may know, includes anything from NERF hoop games and foam fusillades, to boxing robots and itty-bitty, tinkering novelties. To make things even better, though, Hasbro was kind enough to invite us over to its 2013 showcase in NYC, where the prodigious toy maker was exhibiting some Furby amigos known as Party Rockers, Iron Man’s Sonic Blasting figurine and Arc Fx Mission life-sized mask, a Sesame Street play-and-learning system for toddlers, as well as a Transformers Rescue Bots Beam Box which enhances the experience by allowing the toys to mesh into a game that can be played on a TV set. There was also a little Star Wars and Star Trek action, of course — and the good news is you, too, can see it all, just head past the break to take a look at the vast gallery and a quick video showing off a few of Hasbro’s new toys.

If you’re not a Transformers fan, you’d be excused if you didn’t know exactly who Metroplex is. After some comprehensive research, we’ve figured out he’s really tall and holds Optimus in his hand a lot. Oh, also, he’s a new gigantic 24-inch transformer—the biggest ever made. More »

Alphabet Robots Are Still The Best Way to Learn The Alphabet

All these modern-day kids have iPad and iPod touch apps to learn the alphabet. My kindergarten class had a box of these Alphabet Robots for our grimey, snot-ridden hands to play with. With just one or two minor adjustments, a letter of the alphabet suddenly transformed into an adorable little robot creature. This was awesome. It made learning fun. More »

Angry Birds Transformers: Rovio in Disguise

There’s literally tons of Angry Birds merch on the market, and most of it is pretty craptastic. But these Angry Birds characters that open up like Transformers are brilliant.

While I’m thinking that they’re neither official Angry Birds nor Transformers merchandise, that doesn’t make them any less awesome. They were spotted by “The Hong Kong Toy Man” Victor Wong, and they’re just perfect. Now somebody just needs to buy me some for my desk.

Stern Pinball’s Transformers Pin home game hands-on (video)

Image

Sure, CES isn’t all fun and games, but, well, sometimes it’s exactly that. Like when Stern Pinball CEO Gary Stern pays a visit to our CES stage and brings along his company’s latest, the Transformers Pin. This isn’t just any old pinball machine — it’s a home unit, aimed at the large portion of the pinball-buying audience looking to bring silver ball to their humble abodes, available though outlets like Amazon with a price tag well under those of the company’s pro units.

It’s also noticeably smaller than those machines — in fact, if you give it a bit of the old body English during play, you can actually scoot the machine a bit. The back glass is also not quite as grand as those on its professional siblings, but it’s still got a working display for scrolls and the requisite text crawl. The playfield, meanwhile, is pretty close to the real deal. Stern’s clearly expert in making flippers, bumpers and the like, and many of those components went into the making of this machine.

MIT’s Reconfigurable Robots Are Tiny Transformers That Will Turn Into Anything

The idea of transformers is cool even when they just turn from one thing to another, so how much cooler would they be if they could form into anything? That’s the goal MIT aims to achieve with their tiny reconfigurable chain links that could be the Swiss Army knife of robotics. More »
