We already know from our own experience that the Tesla Model S is a driver’s car, with acceleration and handling you wouldn’t expect from a big and quiet luxury sedan. There’s still nothing like a drag race to help settle the matter. Automobile has pitted the upscale EV against one of its more conspicuous rivals, BMW’s M5, with performance results that might surprise those who would expect a 500HP, twin-turbo V8 to regularly come out on top. While we won’t spoil the full results of the showdown video after the break, let’s just say that even the M5’s relatively wide torque band can only do so much when the Model S’ electric motor is always at its peak. BMW’s car may be better overall for those who want to travel long distances outside of certain routes, or to enjoy a burly exhaust note — but there has to be a certain thrill for Tesla drivers who know they can hang with the speed kings while helping the environment.

We wondered why Zipcar CEO Scott Griffith was slated as a keynote presenter at CTIA’s MobileCon — after all, what does renting cars have to do with mobile? Apparently, quite a lot. Griffith stated in his keynote that Zipcar’s app and mobile services have taken a much more central role in the organization. The company is developing its own in-car device holder so that customers can hook up their phones for hands-free functions, and more importantly, the Zipcar smartphone app is due for a major update. The current version can be used to schedule rentals and remote unlock vehicles, but future iterations will transform it into more of an “in-car assistant.” It’ll let you know more information about the car, help you around town with a personal recommendation service, stream your iTunes playlist, and detailed trip feedback like fuel-levels and car conditions will be far easier to report. Zipcar hopes to add new members through the app as well — just take a photo of your driver’s license and get an approval “in minutes.” According to Griffith, the connected car will change our urban landscape, especially with the combination of services like Lyft, Uber, bike sharing, and public transit. It’s not quite the flying car, but the nerd in us is sufficiently pleased.

One small step in May is poised to turn into one giant leap for space capitalism as NASA approved the Sunday evening launch of SpaceX‘s Dragon capsule. The scheduled trip comes just a little over four months after the project successfully completed a docking test by the unmanned private spacecraft with the International Space Station. The Sunday flight — dubbed CRS-1 — will have the Dragon capsule piggybacking on a Falcon 9 rocket to punch through the atmosphere while carrying more than a thousand pounds of cargo. The capsule will then dock with the station for about three weeks before being sent back to Earth to deliver more than a ton of scientific samples and used hardware from the ISS. The launch is scheduled for 8:35PM ET from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station barring a tantrum from Mother Nature (we’ve also seen our share of aborted SpaceX Dragon launches before so we’re keeping our proverbial fingers crossed). NASA says that Orbital Sciences‘ competing Cygnus spacecraft and Antares rocket will also make a demo flight later this year.

Space Shuttles Discovery, Endeavour and Enterprise have all left Kennedy Space Center for new homes, but Atlantis? She’s staying. Come November 2nd, the orbiter will be wheeled out to a 65,000-square-foot exhibit, which is still being constructed at KSC’s visitor complex. Though the craft’s cargo bay doors will be open and its remote manipulator arm extended when its displayed, visitors won’t be able to climb aboard it — or any of the other shuttles, for that matter. However, we got the chance to visit Bay 2 of the Orbiter Processing Facility, step inside Atlantis and give it the hands-on treatment. It wasn’t long ago we witnessed the birth of EV manufacturer Scarlet Motors, and it’s growing up so fast. The company has just announced it has united with the Finnish Metropolia University of Applied Sciences to accelerate the development of its all-electric sports car. Metropolia isn’t new to the EV game, and already has the achievement of the E-RA sporty prototype to its name. Students actively work on research and development projects, and Scarlet’s CEO feels the “unique” university environment will “push the boundaries.” Don’t expect them to have all the fun, however, as Scarlet is creating an online community of motorists to help steer its open design process, even if it does need boffins to build it.
