Long-ESA now the world’s fastest electric airplane

For Chip Yates, it’s all about setting world records. Yates, who also holds the world record for the fastest run on an electric motorcycle at 200 mph, flew the Long-ESA electric airplane at the Inyokern Airport in California’s Mojave Desert this week. Yates was able fly the electric plane at the speed of 202.6 miles per hour, breaking the previous record of 175 mph.

The Long-ESA is actually an electric version of Burt Rutan’s Long-EZ. In case you didn’t know, Rutan is an aerospace engineer who won an X-Prize in 2004. But Chip Yates isn’t resting on his laurels yet as he intends to up the ante to even greater speeds. Yates is planning to share the details of the feat as well as his plans for a nonstop trans-Atlantic electric flight at the EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, Wisconsin next week.

Qantas to hand out free iPads to all passengers on Boeing 767s, save fuel and our sanity (video)

Qantas to hand out free iPads to all passengers on Boeing 767s, save fuel and sanity in the process video

Qantas just upped the ante for its Australian counterparts Jetstar and Virgin in the airline tablet wars. Following an earlier trial, the transporter plans to hand out free iPads to all of its passengers — not just the high-flyers in business-class, like with Jetstar’s iPads or Virgin’s Galaxy Tabs — on every Boeing 767 aircraft in the fleet. The rollout, which starts in the last quarter of the year, will let those bored in the back seats watch an equally free 200 hours’ worth of QStreaming audio and video. Don’t confuse the gesture with a sudden bout of altruism on Qantas’ part, however. The pound-and-a-half weight of a current iPad sheds the tremendous amount of weight that would normally be needed for a conventional in-flight entertainment system built into the headrest, which on a typical 375-seat 767 could see the iPads pay for themselves within years, if not sooner. The option will give many Aussies something to look forward to for their domestic summer vacations. In the meantime, hop past the break for a Qantas video explaining how QStreaming worked during the original trial run.

Zyvex Marine’s LRV-17 is designed to counter pirate attacks

Zyvex Marine, a division of Zyvex Technologies and developer of nanotech lightweight boats, has launched its latest creation – the LRV-17. The LRV-17 is a 17-meter advanced Long Range Vessel that is built for speeds of up to 40 knots with a range of over 1,500 nautical miles. The LRV-17 uses a deep-V hull with an active gyroscope stabilizer that will significantly improve sea handling while reducing factors that can cause human fatigue. By default, the vessel is manned with two operators on it, although four additional seats can be added as well to allow a six-man crew on board. (more…)

Aspid GT-21 Invictus sports car poised to launch in 2014

Car designer Aspid unveiled the Aspid GT-21 Invictus sports car this week, a spin-off of the Aspid Super Sport that was revealed in 2008. So, apart from its good looks that really got me drooling, the Aspid GT-21 Invictus is bigger than the Aspid Super Sport with a 2+2 seating. It is powered by a 450 horsepower 4.4L V-8 engine from BMW that delivers speeds of up to 189 mph (305 km/h). Additionally, Aspid says that the Invictus can crank from 0 to 62 miles per hour (100 km/h) in just 3 seconds, although we’d love to personally try it ourselves.

“We aim to offer a unique and unforgettable experience when a customer buys one of our sports cars,” Chief Designer and Founder Ignacio Fernandez Rodriquez said. “We believe our factory model and our relationship with each customer will be unique and set a new standard in the market. It will be more like the relationship experienced between a professional race driver and his race engineer and race team.” The company is planning to have the GT-21 Invictus sports car ready in 2014.

Nissan Leaf stretch limo edition

Cars, unlike humans, do not need to “grow up”, but they can experience different versions for a same model. Case in point, the all-electric Nissan Leaf will soon arrive for the masses in the form of a stretch limo edition, where the first of its kind had already debuted in Tennessee. Perhaps this will usher in a new era of eco-conscious celebrities who might reconsider their Toyota Prius and actually show up for black tie and red carpet events in Nissan Leaf limousines. At this moment in Tennessee, the all-electric Nissan Leaf stretch limo is running short trips for VIPs who are staying at the Embassy Suites hotel in Franklin.

This particular conversion was made possible thanks to Limoland.com in Springfield, Mo, where they actually cut a Nissan Leaf in half, threw in copious amounts of aluminum in order to stretch the car into a comfortable ride that can seat up to eight passengers. Some of the enhancements thrown into the mix include additional mirrors (a must considering the size of egos in the vehicle), plush leather seats to keep those expensive suits and dresses comfortable, and cedar paneling. The additional weight from all this stretching? We are talking about approximately 400 pounds, so that will tax the battery in the Nissan Leaf, limiting it to around 100 miles per charge.

FanWing planned for 2013 release

What you see above was birthed by the mind of a genius, although it looks really funny compared to all of the other planes that we have seen in the past. You could say that the FanWing is somewhat revolutionary in its design, relying on huge rotating fans that are embedded in its wings which will work to deliver not only lift but propulsion as well. Scale models have made their way across the skies for years now, but it seems that work has been done to deliver a manned ultralight prototype which is touted to hit our skies sometime early next year. That is not too much time left, with it being July now, so we do look forward in anticipation as to how the FanWing will perform.

Within the FanWing’s wings lie long cylindrical turbines that are spun by engines so that they will be able to force air over the top of the wing in order to generate lift as well as forward thrust at once. As the lift is engine-powered in the same way as that of a helicopter, a FanWing is said to be able to take off nearly vertically, and yet remain as efficient as a traditional fixed-wing airplane whenever it is in level flight. No idea on how much it will cost, but it does not look to come cheap that’s for sure.

Porsche 918 Spyder caught on tape at the Nürburgring, bank accounts shiver (video)

Porsche 918 Spyder spotted during testing session at Nrburgring, bank accounts shiver video

Started saving up for your $845,000 purchase next fall yet? Yeah, neither have we. But we’re at least considering it once again — albeit not for very long — thanks to a sneaky videographer that caught the dapper Porsche 918 Spyder winding around the turns of the Nürburgring in Germany. Packing a V8 with two electric motors, the super car can hit 60MPH in a hair over three seconds and touts a fuel efficiency of 78MPG. Don’t worry, though, you have until sometime late next year to get your stacks lined up to park one in your driveway.

GE says its WattStations aren’t behind fried Nissan Leafs, green drivers can relax

GE says its WattStations aren't behind fried Nissan Leafs, green drivers should relax

GE is eager to reassure Nissan Leaf drivers that its WattStation isn’t about to kill their car’s charging ability: it just held a media scrum where it declared, after some study, that its EV charger isn’t the culprit that knocked 11 cars off the power grid. While the electrical pioneer hasn’t narrowed down the cause, it’s confident enough in its innocence that it’s having Nissan dealers retract their original claims of compatibility woes. Nissan spokeswoman Katherine Zachary had previously suggested the fault might lie in a “utility” issue with the power supply itself, although GE notes that it hasn’t gone to people’s homes; it’s testing the affected WattStations in the lab, which could change the results. Whatever’s responsible, we now know that the failure hit diodes in the car’s charging equipment and that the incidents aren’t specific to any one region. It’s safe to say that Leaf owners with WattStations can once more plug in at home and expect to wake up to a full charge.

In-Car WiFi for Audi A4 and A5 2013 models

If you’ve been shopping for an Audi A4 or A5, here’s one more (geeky) reason to be interested: both 2013 models will come with in-car WiFi, which is connected to a 3G modem, which will work on the T-Mobile network. Yes, your car will now have its own SIM card (and wireless bill of $30 or so). This WiFi setup will be able to connect up to 8 devices to the internet, and we assume that it also enables local network communications in case folks in the back want to network-play. (more…)

Space Shuttle Enterprise ready to go on display, space travel gets its fitting tribute

Space Shuttle Enterprise at sea

The Enterprise has been on what we’d call a very leisurely trip around the East coast, but it’s finally time for the original Space Shuttle to settle down. As of Thursday, the only way to glimpse the prototype spacecraft will be under an inflatable roof at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City. It’s a quiet yet noble end for the vehicle, which didn’t go on formal missions but set the ground– sorry, spacework for the Shuttles that came later. If you’re interested in seeing more animated forms of the Enterprise’s legacy, you can either sit down to watch its namesake TV franchise or follow the private expeditions that owe it a debt of gratitude.
