Your new Cadillac ELR will come with OnStar RemoteLink too

Still waiting for those Cadillac ELRs to roll off the production line and onto the forecourt? Well, when they do, turns out they’ll be OnStar-enabled and Smart Grid ready. The OnStar EV-specific mobile app lets you control and schedule when you charge your new wagon up. It’ll even let you locate renewable energy sources (via an third-party services provided over an API), or set it to only charge during off-peak times — to soften some of the inevitable sting from the estimated $75k sticker price. OnStar’s been part of the Volt experience for some time, but GM’s clearly keen to see it come to the bigger vehicle too. It’s even throwing in a year of premium service to get you hooked started.

Musk stands behind Tesla Model S safety, modifies warranty to cover fire damage

Tesla’s growing at home and abroad, as customer demand continues for it’s Model S sedan — even while the EV’s gotten some negative publicity due to a few cars catching fire after being wrecked. So, to ensure that there is no “false perception about the safety of electric cars,” Elon Musk has requested that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigate these fires. This is the same governmental testing body that performs crash tests on all cars driven on US roads, that previously found that the Model S is the safest car it’s ever evaluated. Should anything turn up from the NHTSA looking into the recent fires, Tesla will, quite naturally, make the necessary fix to new models and retrofit the old ones for free. Furthermore, the company’s also updated its warranty to cover Model S fire damage, even if it’s the driver’s fault. The one limitation on that very generous offer? You can’t be actively trying to destroy the car. Makes sense to us.

Mitsubishi Reveals Multi-modal Character-Input Interface For Chinese Language Car Navigation Systems

Mitsubishi Reveals Multi modal Character Input Interface For Chinese Language Car Navigation SystemsMitsubishi has just announced that they will be offering a multi-modal character-input interface for Chinese language car navigation systems, targeting such next generation systems. This human-machine interface (HMI) is able to accepts not only QuanPin but ShuangPin input as well through the use of PinYin phonetic symbols. Apart from that, it is also able to recognize handwriting and audible commands, giving you a grand total of four input modes.

With the multi-modal character input system, those who are interested in checking in out will be able to do so – assuming you happen to be in Tokyo anytime from November 23 to December 1, over at the Tokyo Motor Show 2013. It will be showcased alongside Mitsubishi’s EMIRAI 2 concept vehicle, which should by itself, draw a fair number of curious onlookers to the scene. Why concentrate on China? That country happens to be the world’s largest market for car navigation systems, and the demand from those living in China does not look as though it is on the way to a downhill decline. The many faceted features of the Chinese language, however, has revealed that there is a rather strong need for flexible character-input methods which would be easy to use for all Chinese speakers. ESTOLAS Aircraft Hovers And Flies

Have you ever watched science fiction movies, where the future featured flying vehicles where everyone seemed to be able to keep to the right of way without any accident happening? That is a true miracle, especially when you take into consideration how on our normal roads alone, one would be able to find at least an impatient driver who weaves in and out of traffic, wedging his or her car into whatever space possible without bothering to wait in line like the rest of us. Well, imagine translating that kind of attitude to a flying car – disaster awaits. Still, I am quite sure that many people do look forward to the day when there is a flying car, and perhaps the conceptual hybrid which is the ESTOLAS aircraft that is currently being developed by the European Commission could be the first step in such a direction.

ESTOLAS happens to be an acronym for Extremely Short Take Off and Landing On any Surface, ensuring that the name of this ride itself is pretty much self explanatory. It will merge the traditional elements of an airplane, a hovercraft, a helicopter and some might even point out, that of a blimp. Imagine the ESTOLAS being able to land on just about any flat surface, including water and snow. The military would definitely be more than interested in such a project.

Mitsubishi EMIRAI 2 Concept Car To Go On Display At Tokyo Motor Show

Nearly a couple of years ago, we were treated to a look at the EMIRAI conceptual car interface from Mitsubishi. Well, it has been two years since, and we are pleased to announce that Mitsubishi themselves have come up with some progress concerning this concept. In fact, the EMIRAI 2 will be a whole concept car by itself, and if you happen to make your way to the Tokyo Motor Show that is happening over the course of this weekend, it will be on display there. This particular ride happens to continue from where the original EMIRAI left off, where it will still feature a rear projection customizable dashboard display, biometrics capabilities, as well as a complete sensor array.

The pair of EMIRAI 2 electric-vehicle concept cars that are on display should not be short of curious onlookers. One of the two will feature an EV powertrain, while the other would boast of a driving-assistance system which is touted to make driving on the road safer as well as more comfortable. Just what will the EV powertrain system come with? For starters, it will incorporate high-accuracy traction control as well as acceleration control, while the driving-assistance system would boast of an integrated image sensing in addition to powered on-board display technologies. It will be a sight and treat for motorheads for sure.

Honda starts testing Walking Assist device in large-scale US trials

Honda testing Walking Assist in largescale US trials

Honda’s Walking Assist is finally getting a large-scale test run in the US. The company has started clinical trials of the leg-boosting device at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where it will (hopefully) help stroke victims regain their mobility. While Honda hasn’t said how long the study will last, it could have a significant impact if it proves successful. Up to 80 percent of US stroke survivors have trouble walking quickly or smoothly, and Walking Assist’s combination of hip sensors and motors could get some patients back to a normal stride.

Watch NASA launch its Maven mission to Mars at 1100am video

What are the clouds of Mars made of? That’s the question that’ll be answered when NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) probe reaches our neighbor. Before that can happen, however, it needs to leave home on its long journey, which is scheduled to commence around 1:30pm ET today. The stream kicks off from 11:00, showing the preparations live from Cape Canaveral, so if you’re interested in watching what goes down, or, more appropriately, what goes up, head past the break and grab some popcorn.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: Möbius strip bridge, intelligent beehives and the SeaOrbiter

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

Apple’s new headquarters is perhaps the most hotly anticipated building in the country, and the company just released a new set of images of the spaceship-shaped building. The new renderings provide a detailed look inside the ring-shaped building. Another ambitious proposal could be coming to life: The folks behind a futuristic marine-research vessel known as the SeaOrbiter just launched a crowdfunding campaign. Construction on the knife-shaped vessel is expected to begin next spring. On the gadget front, a pair of engineering students at Duke University has discovered a new way to charge smartphones with WiFi — and they say the power-harvesting device is even more efficient than a USB charger.

Scientists Come Up With A Way To Beam Power From Transmitters To Electric Vehicles

Scientists Come Up With A Way To Beam Power From Transmitters To Electric VehiclesElectric cars are great for the environment as they don’t need to consume gas in order to keep moving. They are, however, rather inconvenient as they will need to be charged and charging stations are not only not as common as gas stations, but charging and electric car also takes much longer than filling up a tank of gas. Scientists at the North Carolina State University might have come up with a solution to fix that, which is to take power from roadside stations and transfer them to passing electric cars. This is not a new concept as it has been thought of before. (more…)

What Finally Makes Train Travel Bearable Might Be… Starbucks?

What Finally Makes Train Travel Bearable Might Be… Starbucks?

Trains are awesome. Their serpentine strings of steel cars travel hundreds of miles an hour, yet give passengers enough stability to sip a tasty beverage. On the other hand, trains are awful. Have you ever seen the sickly cafe cars that serve those drinks?
