California regulator sets rules for ridesharing companies

Lyft car

The California Public Utilities Commission approved ridesharing companies early this year, but it offered only a few temporary guidelines while it worked on a formal rule set. Today, the regulator has published those definitive rules. Companies like Lyft, SideCar and Uber now have to get a CPUC license to operate under a new Transportation Network Company category. To maintain that license, they’ll have to run background checks, train drivers, hold a minimum level of insurance, inspect cars and drop employees who abuse alcohol or drugs. The requirements won’t necessarily eliminate tension with Los Angeles and other cities that believe they have jurisdiction over taxi-like services. However, the CPUC’s move gives California ridesharing companies a degree of comfort — they can keep operating in many cities without fear of being shut down.

Tesla To Build Car With “Auto-Pilot” Mode In Next Three Years

Tesla To Build Car With Auto Pilot Mode In Next Three Years

Tesla has decided to enter into the self-driving car race, after various companies such as Google and Nissan have already detailed their plans. The company is going to produce a car that is capable of running on “auto-pilot” within the next three years. According to Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk, the system will take over 90 percent of the control of the car, adding that it would take longer for fully autonomous cars to be developed.

Musk says that they will develop the technology in-house. Tesla’s online job board has an open position for an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Controls Engineers, the job responsibilities also include aiding “Tesla’s effort to pioneer fully automated driving.” The company’s three year timeframe is said to be quite ambitious. At this point in time, the most advanced self-driving systems available to the public are found in the new Mercedes Benz S550, it touts adaptive cruise control that is capable of handling stop and go traffic. There’s also a feature called Traffic Assist which is capable of handling steering at low speeds. However, before fully autonomous cars can become a staple on the roads, a number of legal and safety issues will need to be resolved, for example, laws in the European Union dictate that a driver must have control of their car at all times.

AR firm’s prototype Glass app makes you an amateur car mechanic (video)

DNP Google Glass owner's manuals app

Developer Metaio knows a thing or two about augmented reality, and building on the magic of its Audi eKurzinfo app, it’s created some prototype software for Google Glass that straps a car’s instruction manual to your face. Instead of relying on markers, GPS or point-cloud processing, the Glass app uses reference CAD models to identify what you’re looking at and overlay directions on a 3D plane. As useful as it may be for walking you through a washer fluid refill (video after the jump), Metaio has created the app to showcase its updated AR platform that’s intended to work with wearables like Epson’s Moverio and the Vuzix M100, as well as Mountain View’s monocle. The firm’s Glass app may never progress beyond proof of concept, but those attending Metaio’s annual InsideAR conference in Munich this October can look forward to a live demo.

General Motors Target Electric Car With 200-Mile Battery Range

General Motors Target Electric Car With 200 Mile Battery RangeJust what do you think is the future of the automobile? We might not be able to see through a vision of cars that fly, just like how it is depicted in the Jetsons or other science fiction series or movies, but one thing’s for sure – the world needs to wean itself off the addiction that is fossil fuel, and start to seriously explore the possibility of turning all cars into hybrids, or in a more pure format, being electric powered. It has been said that the folks over at General Motors have this particular vision of developing an electric car that sports a 200-mile battery range, and all of that without having to break the bank with an estimated price point of just $30,000.

According to General Motors’ Vice President of Global Product Development, Doug Parks, he preferred to remain mum a to when this particular ride, if ever, would enter production. So far, we do know that other automakers have begun to sell electric cars for $35,000 tops, and these are able to last up to 100 miles on a single charge. Hopefully cheaper batteries that last longer will be the key in such a race to unlock a truly green future.

Tesla’s ‘autopilot’ car project targets 90 percent of miles driven, three years from now

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has discussed the company’s ambitions to build a self-driving car on more than one occasion, and now he’s revealed a bit more about its plans. After reports today about a job listing for an Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Controls Engineer, he spoke to the Financial Times and confirmed the company is working on a form of autopilot in-house. Expressing his opinion that fully autonomous cars may be a bit too difficult to achieve right now, he said Tesla “should be able to do 90 per cent of miles driven within three years.” Other major car companies — Mercedes, GM, Volvo and Continental, just to name a few — have projects for either full or partial car self-control, but they’re still under development for reasons both technical and legal. Also hanging in the balance is Google’s autonomous car project, although from Musk’s statements it appears Tesla has decided to go its own way on the technology. The three year target is an ambitious one, but we’ll put this one somewhere between Iron Man and Hyperloop on the Musk scale.

DARPA’s XS-1 program aims for an unmanned spaceship with aircraft-like costs

DARPA's XS1 program aims for reusable spaceplanes that can fly daily

The reusable spacecraft we’ve seen so far haven’t really lived up to their billing: vehicles like the Space Shuttle or SpaceShipTwo require elaborate, expensive launches. If DARPA succeeds with its just-announced XS-1 program, however, spaceflight could be an affordable, everyday occurrence. The agency plans to develop an unmanned spacecraft that requires a minimal ground crew, reaches speeds above Mach 10 and flies at least 10 times in as many days. Provided DARPA meets its goals, XS-1 would both speed up the deployment of small satellites and lower the cost per flight to an “aircraft-like” $5 million or less. Don’t count on seeing a ship in action anytime soon, though. DARPA will only receive some of the first design proposals on October 7th, and someone still has to build the winning project — it will likely be years before XS-1 slips the surly bonds of Earth.

This Modified SUV Puts Backseat Drivers In Control Of The Vehicle

We know how challenging driving can be for most people as we’re distracted by our smartphones, our extremely loud radios and our significant other gabbing about his or her work day. But the worst distraction is the backseat driver, which seems to know more about anything than anyone else in the vehicle. Since backseat drivers think they know so much, this modification that puts them in control of the vehicle seems like the most logical way to get to your destination in as little time as possible. Uber embraces impatience with ETA feature for iOS and Android

Uber embraces impatience with ETA feature for iOS and Android

Uber’s latest update tackles that age old question: are we there yet? The company’s offering up an ETA feature that’ll let you share your estimated arrival time with friends and family via text message. Enable the feature in the app, enter your destination and once your driver starts his or her trip, you can text your real-time ETA along with map link to concerned parties. The latest version of the app is available now for iOS and Android. No word on how time traveling DeLorean rides are expected to impact the app’s estimates.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: lane-straddling bus, invisible skyscraper and space vegetables

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

    DNP

When it comes to public transportation, taking the bus is the least sexy option. Buses are slow; they make frequent stops; and because they share the road with cars, they get stuck in traffic. But a new proposal for a giant lane-straddling bus would eliminate traffic congestion by letting cars pass right through the middle of it. The futuristic bus is just one of several stories about innovations in green transportation on Inhabitat this week. Mercedes-Benz just completed the first cross-country trip for a self-driving car with its S500 Intelligent Drive research vehicle, and BMW unveiled the official production model of its 2015 i8 plug-in hybrid sports car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In other green car news, Nissan announced that it is in the final stages of developing its second electric vehicle — the e-NV200 compact van. In an effort to make flat tires a thing of the past, Korean manufacturer Hankook has produced a puncture-proof, airless tire that is made from 95 percent recyclable materials. And in more good news for green cars, August was the best month ever for US sales of electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and conventional hybrids.

Google Street View Vehicle Crashes Into Multiple Vehicles In Indonesia

Google Street View Vehicle Crashes Into Multiple Vehicles In Indonesia

It’s been quite the interesting year for Google Street View drivers as just this past summer, one was pulled over by police in Japan while another was detained by Thai villagers thinking the driver was spying on them. Now, we’re hearing reports a Google Street View vehicle was not only involved in a failed hit-and-run, but as a result of their driving, they rammed into two busses and a truck. (more…)
