California Set To Implement Electronic License Plate Program

California Set To Implement Electronic License Plate ProgramWhen we talk about license plates, it would be common for most of us (except for the very artistic or futuristic out there) to think of these as metal plates that tell the world the legal identification number of your ride. Well, it does seem that the golden state of California might have something that would definitely tickle the interest of many – that they might offer electronic license plates. California’s senate recently approved a bill that would allow the creation of the country’s first electronic license plate, although it seems to be more focused on the creation of a pilot program that is due to be completed before the year 2017 arrives.

Surely there are benefits to an electronic license plate, don’t you think so? It is meant to induce savings from the DMV (and hence, the state of California) which happen to amount to approximately $20 million in postage. After all, renewal stickers do need to be sent out to a sizable population that will cost some serious coin, don’t you think so? Smart Plate Mobile happens to be the company that holds the patent on the electronic license plate, and it also boasts of the ability to show off advertisements at stops despite the fact that the current bill does not support such an action.

Qualcomm’s Halo wireless charging tech headed to Formula E, safety cars get first dibs

DNP Qualcomm's Halo wireless charging tech headed to Formula E safety cars

Ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show this week, Qualcomm has come out to announce that it’ll be bringing its Halo wireless charging technology to the first-ever Formula E electric vehicle race next year. But before y’all get too excited, only the safety cars will be equipped with Halo for the first season, which goes from September 2014 to June 2015 in London, Rome, Berlin, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles and many more places.

As with these safety cars plus trial vehicles from London taxi firm Addison Lee, the current-gen Halo requires electric vehicles to stay still on large charging pads, which isn’t ideal for racing cars. That said, Qualcomm CMO Anand Chandrasekher told us that his folks are already looking into bringing dynamic charging to racing cars starting in the second season. In other words, these battery-powered vehicles will eventually be able to recharge while still running on the race track!

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: geodesic houseboat, orbital photovoltaic plant and color-changing syringes

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

    DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green

Tesla has been on a tear this year, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Silicon Valley-based electric car maker is using up the world’s supply of lithium-ion batteries, spurring manufacturers to ramp up global production. In other green transportation news, Smart has unveiled the Fourjoy electric concept car in advance of the Frankfurt Motor Show. Barcelona launched the world’s first public electric scooter-sharing scheme, which promises to help users save money and decrease fuel consumption. In Buffalo, a man built himself a 16-foot geodesic houseboat in just a few weeks for less than $2,000. And if you want to have your mind blown, check out the photos from this year’s Bloemencorso Zundert flower parade in the Netherlands, which features floats made from thousands of flowers.

IFA 2013 wrap-up: Galaxy Note 3, Xperia Z1, smartwatches, lens cameras, 4K displays and more

We reckoned IFA would be an exceptionally busy show, and now that we’ve combed through all of our coverage and condensed it here, it’s clear the event lived up to our expectations. Sure, the venerable CES may have topped IFA in show floor square feet, but the announcements in Berlin generated perhaps even more excitement than those that came out of Las Vegas in January. A pair of high-profile smartwatches, two titanic smartphones, a duo of lens cameras, 4K displays and a bevy of hands-ons await you in a neat, yet massive, roundup after the break.%Gallery-slideshow83286%

Uber to offer Delorean rides in SF this weekend only, time travel not included

DNP Uber to offer Delorean rides in SF this weekend, time travel not included

If you’re a Back to the Future fanatic who wasn’t able to snag a Delorean on eBay or hitch a ride in a time-traveling taxi cab, then you might want to head to the City by the Bay this weekend. Uber has partnered with GE as part of the latter’s Brilliant Machines campaign to offer rides in, yes, a Delorean, but only in San Francisco and only for the following three days. They’ll be operational some time between 12 to 9pm on Friday and between 12 to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday — you’ll know a Delorean is available if you see an option pop up on the app (as seen in the screenshot after the break). However, Uber told us there’ll only be four of them on the road. Due to the limited availability, you’re restricted to just 15 minutes per trip and only one passenger per vehicle. The company’s pulled publicity ploys like this before — remember the ice cream trucks and those $3,000 helicopter rides? — but we have to admit this one makes our inner Marty McFly smile. So if you’re feeling lucky, take a trip to SF and try your hand at hailing one of these 1.21-gigawatt-powered beauties. Be sure to ask the driver if he can reach 88MPH.

Deutsche Telekom’s LTE Connected Car delivers streaming media with complete control (hands-on video)

Deutsche Telekom's LTE Connected Car delivers streaming media with complete control handson video

Connected car concepts are nothing new, but a compelling one stands out among the crowd of half-baked ideas. Here at IFA, Deutsche Telekom’s demo is one such example, thanks to its simple but intuitive execution and downright usefulness. A very friendly Telekom rep let us step inside to check out the concept from a child’s perspective.

Set up in a BMW (naturally), the system utilizes an LTE hotspot, a few backseat-mounted iPads and BMW’s ConnectedDrive service to provide entertainment on long car trips. Kids sitting in the backseat navigate to their personal profiles on Telekom’s associated app, and from there they can access services such as Videoload, Maxdome (both for renting movies) and Audiobooks. There’s also the option to view real-time trip progress via Google Maps, and kids can even select a webcam mode to see the road from mom or dad’s perspective.

Garmin’s smartphone-compatible HUD makes an appearance at IFA 2013, we go eyes-on

    Garmin HUD

The connected car concept has gained plenty of traction, but not everyone can afford an Audi or BMW to get that functionality built in. Deutsche Telekom’s hoping to bring a taste of that luxury to the masses by pairing its Navigon Telekom Edition app with Garmin’s heads-up display. This version of the app, available exclusively for German customers, brings heads-up directions, speed limit and other important stats to the HUD, provided it’s connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Garmin’s dash-mounted hardware is already available stateside for $150, but it’s up for grabs here at IFA for €149. We go eyes-on in the gallery below.

MS Turanor PlanetSolar Is A Solar Powered Boat

MS Turanor PlanetSolar Is A Solar Powered BoatHere is a question that a hundred years ago, no one would have been able to answer – how does one move a ship that weighs 100 tonnes without any kind of fuel, sail, or slave labor? Well, thankfully technology has advanced to such a degree in this day and age, that a pioneering group of Swiss investors and German engineers have decided to harness the power of the sun, in the form of the MS Turanor PlanetSolar.

Basically, the solar-powered boat known as the MS Turanor PlanetSolar happens to be the largest boat of its kind, and it does allow us to get a glimpse into what the future of marine travel would look like. The whole idea when creating the MS Turanor PlanetSolar was to go around the globe, according to Rachel Bros de Puechredon from PlanetSolar who said, “The idea was to demonstrate the enormous potential of solar power by circumnavigating the globe.”

Of course, the team managed to do so successfully after navigating some 60,000km. Just how many solar panels are required to move such a behemoth? The Turanor relies on over 500 sq m of solar panels in order to power its pair of 60kW electric engines, which will in turn individually drive a standard propeller. With those electric engines, they can push the 35m catamaran to hit a maximum speed of 14 knots.
