Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo Breaks The Sound Barrier

Earlier this year in April, billionaire Richard Branson’s upcoming commercial spacecraft, SpaceShipTwo, managed to achieve its first rocket powered flight, and earlier today, it managed to achieve a successful test flight again, rocketing over the skies of California after being dropped from its carrier plane. Not only that, in the second test flight, the SpaceShipTwo managed to achieve a “Concorde” – that is, by breaking the sound barrier as it climbed from 42,000 feet to 69,000 feet over the Mojave Desert using rocket power, before it makes a descent using its tilt-wing “feathering” maneuver.

When finally available, the SpaceShipTwo will be able to ferry half a dozen passengers on its initial suborbital flights. Virgin Galactic mentioned, “In addition to achieving the highest altitude and greatest speed to date, the test flight demonstrated the vehicle’s full technical mission profile in a single flight for the first time … All of the test objectives were successfully completed.” So far, over 500 folks have signed up for the two-hour flight which costs a whopping $200,000 per seat. If you had that kind of money to burn, would you go down that route, or do you think that such an experience is worth forgoing in lieu of a one-off donation to some needy part of the world?

DNP Virgin Galactic completes its second successful test flight

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo might not have the flashiest name, but a lack of nominal originality didn’t stop it from completing its second test flight today at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. Back in April, SpaceShipTwo’s first flight hit an altitude of 55,000 feet (traveling at Mach 1.2) before descending, but this time around, the little rocket plane that could one-upped itself. After being ferried to a height of approximately 40,000 feet by carrier-craft WhiteKnightTwo, the ship soared to an impressive 69,000 feet at Mach 1.4 while the engine roared for a total of 20 seconds. The outing, led by pilots Mark Stucky and Clint Nichols, also marked the first test of the craft’s wing-tilting re-entry system. According to Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson, SpaceShipTwo’s progress means that the company is still on track to launch its commercial service in 2014. To see the test flight for yourself, check out the video after the break.

NFL Players Association contracts with Uber to curb drunk driving

NFL Players Association contracts with Uber to curb drunk driving

In a commendable move, the NFL Players Association is contracting with Uber for the 2013-2014 season in an attempt to keep intoxicated athletes from getting behind the wheel. Each player will receive a personalized keychain card that contains $200 credit for the on-demand ridesharing service, which will complement an existing telephone-based service that’s offered by the union. Uber currently operates in 17 of the NFL’s 31 cities, which isn’t ideal, but the service is expanding at a respectable pace. The agreement stands as Uber’s biggest deal with major league sports to date, which previously provided a trial service to the San Francisco Giants. Naturally, we’d like to see other players’ organizations and teams get on board with similar programs, which could help prevent tragedies such as the one that took the life of a Dallas Cowboys player last year.

Tesla Model S Being Prepared For Cross-Country Road Trip

Tesla Model S Being Prepared For Cross Country Road TripJust how far can the all electric Tesla Model S go on a full battery? Well, earlier this year, Tesla Motors founder and CEO, Elon Musk, did reiterate his intentions to perform a cross country trip – not on a fossil fuel powered ride, but rather, in a Tesla Model S. In the past, such a trip would have required a fair amount of planning, many hours of charging as well as many other different stops along the way, but considering the technology that is available these days with free Supercharger fast-charging networks around, it is not that daunting a task.

Musk did tweet that his Los Angeles to New York family road trip plans have already been finalized, and the entire trip is expected to last less than a week. Six days to be exact, where a mere 9 hours of charging are required in order for the Tesla Model S, with its passengers and some luggage within, to make that cross country trip possible. Of course, the 9 hours of charging will not be done at one place, but rather, it will be spread across several stops, taking approximately 1.5 hours of charging each day. Musk claims that his only stops would be for eating or sightseeing, so he will wrap those around while juicing up his ride.

Man Puts Giant Flamethrower On Mobility Scooter For The Heck Of It

If you’ve made a trip down to your local Walmart, you’ll know just how harmless scooters can be so long as the person riding it isn’t making their way to the last box of Cookie Crisp. Scooters have increased in popularity as senior citizens and disabled people have relied on them to make their way through the world, which is why we’re not entirely sure why someone went through the trouble of equipping one with a giant flamethrower, but we’re happy they did. TriMet mobile ticketing app opens to all mass transit riders in Portland area

TriMet mobile ticketing app opens to all mass transit riders in Portland area

After a successful closed beta trial, mobile ticketing is now a reality for the multitude of mass transit riders in the Portland metropolitan area. The TriMet Tickets app is now available for iPhone and Android users, establishing TriMet as the nation’s first multimodal transit agency to offer smartphone-based ticketing across all of its operations — this includes the region’s commuter rail, light rail, streetcar and bus lines. The free app allows users to purchase either one or multiple tickets, which extend from 2-hour fares to 30-day passes. Tickets are verified with QR codes and on-screen animations, making it difficult for riders to game the system with simple screenshots. The mobile payment system is made possible by GlobeSherpa, a Portland-based company that also provides service alerts and backend fleet optimization for the TriMet system. BlackBerry and Windows Phone users can look forward to forthcoming versions of the TriMet Tickets app, and for a quick overview, you’ll find a tutorial video after the break.

‘Kirobo, please stop talking and open the pod bay doors’ (video)

Japanese robot Kirobo speaks in space, leaves pod bay doors alone

Kirobo, the mini-robot / Japanese Space Agency marketer, has spoken his first words in space after being launched last month. The University of Tokyo and Toyota research project wished Earth “good morning” and mouthed other space platitudes from his perch at the International Space Station. The bot can also recognize voices and will converse with astronauts as part of his mission goals. Then, after he’s lulled them into a false sense of security…

Rimac unveils greyp G12 electric bike with 75 mile range, 40mph top speed

Rimac unveils Greyp G12 electric bike with 75 mile range, 40mph top speed

Rimac’s Concept One has been something of an enigma, but there’s no doubting that the EV maker has just taken the veil off its latest product — the greyp G12 electric bike. If you’re not sure if looks like a motorbike, or regular bicycle, that’s okay, because Rimac claims it’s both. It can do 40mph (unassisted) with a pedal-free range of 75 miles, after that, you’re on your own. With an alleged charge time of 80 minutes (from zero), from any regular power outlet, the G12 could be a winner with city dwellers looking to get about town. Other neat tricks include fingerprint activated ignition that allows different digits to trigger the bike’s two modes — street or speed — with profiles for up to 50 users available. There’s no official word on price or availability, but if you want to become a “dealer,” you could expect to take delivery of one as soon as October for 6,000 euros (about $7,900). Pedal past the break for a video of the greyp doing its thing.

The future arrives: Pioneer launches sat-nav with augmented reality

    Image

We’re sufficiently old that we remember when the windscreen augmented-reality display from Knight Rider 2000 seemed fanciful. Still, 200 years later, and finally, such things are a reality. Pioneer is launching NavGate, a sat-nav with a built-in projector that’ll overlay a 30-inch display over the road ahead. Using the unit, drivers can see turn-by-turn directions, the current speed limit, distance, a clock and the estimated time of arrival. The hardware pairs with various smartphone platforms and will even pull data from the CoPilot and iGo Primo navigation apps. It’ll be available from October and will set Europeans back around £600 ($933).

JetBlue’s next-generation WiFi service, powered by ViaSat’s super-speedy Ka-band satellite, is officially on track to launch this October. The FAA just issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the airline’s Airbus A320, enabling a fleet-wide installation that’s set to begin immediately. In a statement, Chief Commercial Officer Robin Hayes said that several aircraft will be wired by the end of this year, with many A320s scheduled to come online throughout 2014. The rollout will then continue with JetBlue’s smaller Embraer 190, currently used on select regional routes.
