Kidswalker NT Has Your Child Piloting Their Own Drill-Equipped Mech

Riding a fully-functional mech is probably extremely high on most people’s list, or at least people that could be considered to be extremely cool, and we might never get to see the day where we can ride a mech, a Japanese company is making it possible for your kids to do so.

Sakakibara-Kikai created the Kidswalker NT, which is a miniature gas-powered exoskeleton which features a chest plate that flips up to protect the rider, moving arms and a “drill” attachment for those days when adventuring into ground is a must. The drill can be activated by twisting on the Kidswalker NT’s throttle-like controls, although we certainly would warn the kid rider to watch where they point that thing as we’re sure it’ll poke more than a few hundred eyes out.

The Kidswalker NT measures in at 5.2 feet and weighs 397lbs and costs a total of $21,000, although if you’re thinking of having it shipped to the U.S., we’re sure its shipping costs would certainly reach in the thousands as well. If you’re an awesome parent with some extra pocket money to spend, we’re sure your child will never forget this gift.

New York City Celebrates Earth Day With All Electric Taxi Pilot

Earth Day has officially started in the U.S. which means we’ll all have to use the bathroom less, turn off all of the lights or whatever else you do in order to celebrate today’s event, but New York City decided today would be the best day to unveil its new electric taxi pilot program.

Don’t expect all taxis in the New York City area to magically be replaced with electric vehicles, as only six Nissan LEAF cabs will hit the streets as a way to introduce the program to those looking to take a ride inside of a green vehicle. The Taxi and Limousine Commission believes electric cabs could recede gas emissions by nearly 90,000 tons annually while also reducing fuel and maintenance costs as electric cabs don’t have belts that would wear out with normal use as combustion engines. NYC rolls out six Nissan Leafs in EV taxi pilot, good luck catching one

New York City’s full-on EV taxi blitz may not come until late this year, but the metropolis is taking its first tentative steps into that electric world as of today: it’s deploying the six Nissan Leaf cabs promised as part of a pilot program. The half-dozen sedans will spend a year on the road, with officials able to gauge the effectiveness of EVs as taxis when they have access to both regular chargers at their home bases as well as fast chargers in Manhattan’s far West Side, Lower East Side and Union Square. Don’t expect to hail an eco-friendly cab very often, though — along with the daunting numerical odds, the Leaf drivers have more liberty than usual to turn down passengers and protect their remaining power supply. If you do happen to find yourself in the back seat, however, you’ll likely get a glimpse at New York’s cleaner and quieter future.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Battery Modifications Approved By FAA

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Battery Modifications Approved By FAA

It has been nearly four months since the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet was grounded due to troubles with its battery system. Overheating of the 787′s battery had lead to an emergency landing and an incident of smoke filling up in the cockpit. Since January, Boeing has been working on modifications for the battery system, which have now finally been approved by the Federal Aviation Authority. The certification testing for this new battery system was completed nearly two weeks ago.

Starting next week the FAA will send out instructions to airlines with Dreamliners on how to implement these new modifications. Soon after that happens the grounding order on 787 will be lifted. Boeing hasn’t exactly said when that will happen but it has already deployed teams all around the world to aid airlines in the installation of these modifications. The FAA will also be keeping a close eye on 787 battery system modifications in the U.S. fleet so as to assure proper installation, teams of inspectors will be deployed at modification locations. According to Boeing it takes five days per plane to make these modifications.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO says governments shouldn’t ‘strong arm’ automakers into producing electric vehicles

FiatChrysler CEO says governments shouldn't 'strong arm' automakers into producing electric vehicles

Fiat may now be producing electric vehicles, but CEO Sergio Marchionne apparently doesn’t think they represent the future for the automaker just yet — or, at least, the only future. Speaking at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit yesterday, Marchionne said that his company is losing $10,000 on every 500e car sold (a figure he first offered fully two years ago), and added that “doing that on a large scale would be masochism in its extreme.” Those comments came as part of a larger point he was making about the push towards electric vehicles, and what he described as “strong arm” tactics from governments promoting EVs over other alternatives. Instead of “rushing into embracing EVs as the only technological solution,” he says, “government can help drive best results by remaining technology neutral.” As for what Chrysler itself is looking at beyond EVs, Marchionne pointed to traditional engine improvements and alternative fuels like natural gas, which he says is the “cleanest alternative available in terms of emissions.”

Volkswagen iBeetle Plays Nice With Apple Devices

Volkswagen iBeetle Plays Nice With Apple DevicesApple has a penchant for naming a fair number of their gizmos with the prefix of the letter “i”, and here we are keeping our fingers crossed that Volkswagen will not do the same with their future rides, even should the Volkswagen iBeetle do extremely well in the market. Wait a minute here, you say, just exactly what is the Volkswagen iBeetle all about?

The spanknig new Volkswagen iBeetle will be accompanied by an iPhone docking station, which has been specially integrated into the dashboard itself. This would mean you can snap the iPhone in its place nice and sturdy, where just about every single one of the phone’s functions will be able to be accessed and executed in the iBeetle directly, such as hands-free calls, navigation, and music playback, among others.

There will also be an app that helps hold everything together in terms of functionality, an advanced on-board instrumentation, gas-mileage trainer, text-to-speech message reader, and photos among others. Itching for a new ride already?

Volkswagen iBeetle integrates the iPhone through a dock, an app… and that’s it

Volkswagen iBeetle integrates iOS through an iPhone dock, an app and that's it

Many see Apple and Volkswagen as two peas in a pod given their similar marketing, even if previous talk of collaborations amounted to little more than speculation. That purported dream team will soon become real through the iBeetle, an adaptation of the modern VW Bug designed with a little help from Apple. Don’t get your hopes up for a tie-in on the level of VW’s iPad-friendly Bulli concept, however. The integration mostly amounts to an iPhone dock as well as a car-optimized iOS app that can play music, read messages aloud, take photos and augment the instrument cluster. It’s a solid idea, especially when a large number of us already use our smartphones this way, but it isn’t very adventurous — the iPhone won’t coordinate extensively with the center stack, unlike smartphone-aware infotainment platforms such as GM’s MyLink or Ford Sync. We’d still take a close look at the iBeetle when coupe and convertible models reach US dealerships in early 2014, but it may be best for those already bent on getting some fahrvergnügen from their next ride.

FAA approves Boeing 787 battery fix, gives the green light for repairs

It’s been a few weeks since the Boeing 787 successfully completed testing, but the FAA has finally weighed in on the proposed tweaks to the plane’s faulty lithium-ion batteries. Today the organization approved Boeing’s battery fix, which means the aircraft maker could soon end the three-month grounding of all Dreamliners. The real action will come next week, when the FAA will issue instructions for making changes to the 787s and — according to an official statement — “publish in the Federal Register the final directive that will allow the 787 to return to service.” Airlines operating the Dreamliner, including United and ANA, will be required to install containment and venting systems in addition to replacing the batteries with the new, modified components. This is certainly some good news for Boeing; these past few months haven’t exactly been easy on the company’s pocketbook (or reputation), but it still has plenty of work ahead in retrofitting its 50-strong fleet.

Epic’s Torq Roadster three-wheeled EV gets taken on a test drive (video)

Epic Torq Roadster threewheeled EV gets taken on a test drive video

While the Tesla Roadster did a great job of satisfying our jones for an electric vehicle with great performance and no roof, it was a bit pricey and is now out of production. Into that void steps the three-wheeled Torq Roadster from Epic EV, a team also responsible for that electric-engined DeLorean prototype we saw a couple of years ago. This video shows Translogic’s Bradley Hasemeyer behind the wheel of the track-friendly (but also street legal, licensed as a motorcyle) vehicle and talking to the people who built it. It’s not quite as fast as the Tesla Roadster, but it’s still capable of 0 – 60 in about four seconds and a top speed of 110mph.

You’ll notice a Samsung tablet mounted on the dash, and many of the components are sourced from Volkswagen. Unlike most of the daily driver-aimed electric vehicles we’re familiar with that are very locked down, founder Chris Anthony claims its design allows owners to tweak and tune many features. Its DC motor means there’s no regenerative braking, but he claims it’s cheaper and allows owners to rewind the armature or upgrade the brushes. The first Torq Roadster was delivered earlier this month to a former Tesla exec and you can read about his experiences on BoostedGroup. Those of us who haven’t paid the $65,000 base price can check it out in the video, which is embedded after the break.

$82 Million Private Jet Terminal For Silicon Valley Elites Approved

$82 Million Private Jet Terminal For Silicon Valley Elites Approved

Silicon Valley is home to aspiring startups and billion dollar behemoths alike. Quite a number of companies based there use corporate jets and now the San Jose City Council has approved construction of a $82 million corporate jet terminal at the airport. The council approved a 50 year lease agreement with a private company, Signature Flight Services, which will build this terminal on the west side of Mineta San Jose International Airport.

Google will be benefiting the most from this new terminal. Out of the seven hangars that are going to be built here, five will be controlled by Blue City Holdings, which will look after the private jets of Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, as well as executive chairman Eric Schmidt. Signature Fight Services is expected to give as much as $3 million in rent, excluding additional fees, to the airport. Its was a 10-1 vote, with nearly two dozen nearby residents calling for the council to reconsider this project by either reducing the length of lease or increase curfew violation fines. There’s no word as yet on when terminal construction will begin.
