Garmin To Provide Navigation System For Future Mercedes Benz Cars

Garmin To Provide Navigation System For Future Mercedes Benz Cars

At the Consumer Electronics Show in January Garmin showed off the K2 platform. They vowed many with their latest infotainment platform, including Daimler AG. According to their latest press release, future Mercedes Benz cars will now feature in-dash GPS navigation provided by Garmin. Over the next four years Garmin’s system will be fully integrated in to Mercedes Benz cars, it begins with the 2014 models. Mercedes Benz is yet to reveal which features of the entire platform it will be integrated in its cars, we can expect news to trickle in once they announce launch models in 2014.

The system in future Mercedes Benz cars will display important driver information such as the next upcoming turn on a secondary display that will be placed behind the steering wheel. The in-dash display will show navigation and maps. The navigation functions will be controllable through the system’s rotary controller or through the voice command functionality. Garmin’s system will also provide critical positiong information for Advanced Driver Assistance or (ADAS), this funtionality of the car helps drivers in challenging situations. For the sake of clarity, the entire infotainment system is not Garmin, it’s the navigation and maps related features that are going to be provided by it.

Garmin to power future Mercedes-Benz infotainment systems

It looks like Garmin has managed to lock down a very solid deal following its automotive group’s compelling demo at CES. The company’s in-dash GPS software is now set to roll out with future Mercedes-Benz models — Garmin’s navigation system is scheduled to be fully integrated within the next four years, and will begin appearing with select 2014 models. The solution sounds similar to the version we saw on display during CES, and includes a primary panel in the center console, along with a secondary display located behind the steering wheel, tasked with providing key driver stats, along with next turn info, for example.

Mercedes will share more details once specific launch vehicles are announced, but Garmin said to expect features like Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS), to help out with vehicle positioning, while the car manufacturer will bring tools like a rotary controller and voice commands to the table. What remains to be seen is how TomTom will fit into the mix — last month, the company announced plans of its own to provide HD Traffic service to certain Mercedes vehicles, though it’s unclear if the two GPS giants will be working together on this latest venture.

Update: Garmin reached out to clarify that the company will be providing the GPS software for Mercedes-Benz’s own infotainment solution. So it’s not all Garmin under the hood.

Samoan Airline Begins Charging Passengers By Their Body Weight

Samoan Airline Begins Charging Passengers By Their Body Weight
People who are considered medically to be obese have always had issues when it came to air travel as nobody wants to sit near you and the airlines tend to treat you terribly just because of your weight. It looks as though things aren’t going to get any easier for those of you who are carrying a bit of extra personal baggage as Somoa Air is introducing a pricing policy that charges its passengers by their body weight.

A passenger would be required to not only enter the weight of their baggage, but for themselves as well at the time of booking. The combined weight will be used to calculate the price of the ticket, with its values being verified at the airport by weighing customers and their bags. The reason for the introduction of this new policy is due the Samoa Air’s fleet of aircrafts largely being made up of 12-seater aircrafts, which means the passengers and their bags need to be factored in to have a safe takeoff. It also doesn’t help that Samoans are known to carry a few extra pounds.

Hyundai Unveils E4U Concept Personal Vehicle

Hyundai Unveils E4U Concept Personal Vehicle

The New York Auto Show is currently going on in New York City until this Sunday, but Hyundai decided to show off its newest in personal mobility vehicles at the Seoul Motor Show last week. Hyundai’s E4U is a concept vehicle which was designed by the company’s Advanced Design Department and can actually be driven in any direction.

The E4U doesn’t use tires like a traditional vehicle would. Instead, it uses a rotating semispherical  part that spins horizontally. The semisphere is in a titled position to help generate drive, while two stabilizing wheels located at the rear of the vehicle keep it moving straight. Two pedals are located inside of the driver’s cockpit which allow the E4U to tilt in a certain way where it can be moved forward or backwards, depending on the pedal that has been pushed. The driver of the vehicle admits it does take some getting used to. (more…)

Kia CUB Concept Has A Heart For Your Health

Kia CUB Concept Has A Heart For Your HealthMost, if not all, of the vehicles that you see on the road these days started off as a concept. It makes perfect sense, as a concept would also allow a company to gauge the potential reception that a particular ride receives when it is finally released to the masses. Not only that, concepts will throw away all conventional thinking that boxes one in, and frees the designer to push the boundaries of what is the current norm. The Kia CUB concept that was revealed at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show, will be a five door compact vehicle that targets ‘trend-setting urban dwellers’.

The Kia CUB concept will make use of long, low shapes, where the interior remains fully focused on the driver, while all the rest of the normally fussy details have been suppressed to the bare minimum. As for the instrument panel itself, it is comprised of a couple of large gauges that Kia claims were ‘inspired by the eyes of a wild animal.’ There is also a sensor strip which has been integrated into the steering wheel, where it claims to monitor the driver’s biorhythms. Isn’t this concept neat or what? Would you like to see it roll off production lines eventually?

Deepsea Challenger Donated By James Cameron

Deepsea Challenger Donated By James CameronFilmmaker James Cameron needs no introduction, and for those who are not in the know, he is also an avid explorer, where he actually performed a solo dive to the deepest place on Earth, which is known as the Challenger Deep, at the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench not too long ago. In a move to mark the one-year anniversary of the journey that took him 11,000 meters below sea level, Cameron decided to announce that Christmas has come early, as he will transfer the vehicle to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), which is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to marine research and engineering.

Taking seven years to design and build, the Deepsea Challenger is a vertically-deployed, human-piloted vehicle that can access some of the least explored environments on the planet, without endangering the life of the pilot at all. It is nice to see philanthropic moves like these being done by those who have the clout and financial muscle, as mankind edges forward in technology.

Tesla Model S axes 40 kWh battery option, surpasses sales goals

Thinking of picking up the budget Tesla Model S? Think again: the electric automaker just announced that it won’t be sending its 40 kWh battery pack option into production, citing a lack of customer demand. Customers who opted for the lower range configuration will still get a car, of course, but it will be a 60 kWh machine with software restrictions on range. It sounds like a raw deal, but Tesla promises customers that the artificially limited Model S will reap unexpected benefits from the battery swap — that is, improved acceleration and a higher top speed. All of the company’s 60 kWh cars will be built with Supercharger hardware, too. Finally, the company announced that it surpassed its first quarter sales goal, having delivered 4,750 Model S vehicles on its planned 4,500. This gives it a head start on its year-end goal of delivering 20,000 cars in 2013 and presumably secures the Q1 profits it promised shareholders back in February. Curious onlookers and Department of Energy collectors can find the details after the break.

Insert Coin Drive with Dash charts car data live, with gauges and dashcams video

We’ve seen a few stabs at smartphone-enhanced car diagnostics as of late, but many good solutions like Automatic Link and Delphi’s Vehicle Diagnostics are primarily useful after you’ve parked. The upcoming Dash OBD-II adapter is certainly up to that side of the job, telling a Bluetooth-connected iOS device (and eventually, Android) about your car’s problems and estimating fuel costs based on the gas tank’s levels. Where it stands out is its usefulness while on the road: the custom app offers custom live gauges, including a Green-Meter for ideal fuel economy that you won’t usually find in a real instrument cluster. There’s even a dashcam mode that overlays travel details on captured video, whether it’s to support insurance claims or just to immortalize a drive through the back country.
