Imagine walking down a quiet street and suddenly, a body just falls out of the sky. It’s a crazy, horrifying thought. But it’s nearly what happened in a suburb of London last weekend, when a stowaway hiding in the undercarriage of a plane en route to Heathrow plunged to his death. Sounds like a freak situation, but just how often does this madness happen? More »
Xcom Global launches LTE data for travelers at $18 a day, starting in Japan
Posted in: Today's ChiliXcom Global has been busy carving out a reputation as the world traveler’s best friend, but that globetrotter has always had to make do with 3G even if there was 4G back home. As of September 20th, frequent roamers of the sort will have access to LTE when abroad — at least, if they’re planning a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. A deal between Xcom and EMOBILE will let visitors to Japan get up to 75Mbps by renting a Huawei GL01P hotspot to the tune of $18 a day, up slightly from Xcom’s usual $15. The pocket router won’t work in other countries, but it will supply dual-carrier HSPA+ 3G if travelers wander outside of the fastest coverage areas. Not planning a trip to Osaka? We’re told Xcom plans to expand its LTE option to Europe at some point in the future, starting with the UK — good timing, that.

Feel free to correct me on this, but I find that a lot of things I want or need are way cheaper overseas. Maybe it’s the huge import taxes or the markup that retailers put on the goods once they reach me here (in the Philippines,) but I know a lot of people who hoard whenever they go out of the country (my family included.)
The consequence of hoarding is having to pay excessive excess baggage fees when it’s time to head back home. Of course, you can avoid that by just shipping all your extra stuff home. And for the things you just have to hand carry, there’s the Jaktogo.
Like a Scottevest on steroids, the Jaktogo is an outrageous, even atrocious-looking garment that will make you look like you’re wearing a giant-sized garbage bag. But it can carry up to 33 pounds of stuff, so that has to count for something.
Jaktogo is available online for €79.95 (~$102 USD).

R2D2 Luggage Would Be Way Cooler If It Automatically Followed You Around [Star Wars]
Posted in: Today's Chili Since no one here on earth currently has the need for an astromech droid capable of light spaceship repairs, re-purposing R2D2 as an autonomous suitcase is a brilliant idea. So it’s kind of disappointing that this rolling artoo luggage has to be manually dragged along. More »
A sturdy set of padded comfortable straps can make a world of difference when toting a heavy backpack. But o-range, an Italian bag maker, thinks it has come up with an even better solution—a wraparound vest that hugs your entire torso, instead of straps that just cling to your shoulders. More »
It was inevitable the game-like features of Foursquare’s ‘mayorships,’ ‘badges’ and ‘check-ins’ would ultimately pave a path to paid advertising. Yes, that unassuming little geolocation-based
app that launched three short years ago at South by Southwest and has
amassed over 20 million registered users has decided to monetize.
Finally slipping into their big boy pants, Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai’s company have launched "Promoted Updates," with clients Madison Avenue ad agencies have been known to court over the years.
The Mach 6 Scramjet Could Fly from JFK to SFO in an Hour (if it Doesn’t Tear Apart on the Way) [Video]
Posted in: Today's Chili We could have had Bin Laden in 1998. However, in the 80 minutes it took for a volley of cruise missiles travel from US ships in the Arabian Gulf over to his training camp in Afghanistan, he had done packed up and left. If those warheads had been riding on the new X-51 hypersonic jet engine, they’d have made his day much worse in just 12 minutes. More »
