Japanese Sweets: Stats and Trends for 2013

If one thing stands out particularly clearly in the streets of Japan, it is the endless number of sweet shops. From trendy tea or coffee houses offering a little something sweet with your beverage, through the numerous French-styled bakeries, to the traditional Japanese sweet shops, Japanese people have many delicious options to satiate their sweet tooth.

And as for their sweet tooth, Japanese people have a big one with over 90% of people admitting to liking sugary treats in My Voice’s 2013 March survey on sweets. But not only do they have a sweet tooth, they actually indulge it and quite often at that, with most people admitting to eating sweets from once to three times a week.

Following that, an online sweet specialty store asked its clients in August to deliberate on this fall’s favourite sweets, and in ad-equation with Japaneses preference for seasonal products, chestnut based Mont-Blanc was voted number one. The French cake ranked first (40%) out of 20 different types of sweets and cakes, followed by the Apple pie (31%) and the Cheesecake (27%).

However the most interesting part of the august survey is the overview of how sweets in Japan are bought, and online orders of sweets seems a growing trend (increasing from 31.2% in 2011 to 48.7% in 2013), as well as sweet consumption in general, as reported in “Tokyo retail foods” report.

Surprisingly they are not bought as gifts that you send to others (only 15%) but more as treats that you eat yourself (44%). In a country such as Japan where the culture of gift making is very entrenched in mentalities and has achieved the status of institution according to anthropologist Harumi Befu, this switch from sweets as gifts to sweets as personal consumption is quite note worthy.

Even more interesting is the fact that many of the cakes and sweets suggested for the survey, need to be eaten fresh and that is not stopping people from ordering them online. This is thanks to services such as ”宅急便ヤマト黒猫” (Yamato Black Cat rapid delivery service) that made delivering raw/ fresh / frozen goods common and trustworthy enough in Japan, that nobody would bat an eyelid at receiving ice-cream or cheese cake through the mail.

Not only is Yamato rapid delivery service capable of offering same-day delivery for the frozen products they convey with no damage (thanks to excellent packaging and careful handling), but they are also reasonably priced (between 1050 JPY (~10 USD) to 2080 JPY (~20 USD) ) and when you are not available to receive your package at home, it is kept in a refrigerated space at the closest storage facility, cost free.

Several well known Patisserie in Tokyo have, by using this rapid delivery service, set up online shops where you can order anything from the shop, from chocolates to ice creams. Others have joined online food retailers, the biggest of which being Amazon.jp, and offer approximately the same services, including the high quality packaging Japanese shops are well known for.

And for those of you gasping over the possible drop in service quality, if shrimp can make it alive and well, so can your cake in all its pristine packaging glory.

Twitter acquires Trendrr to bolster real-time coverage of TV trends

Twitter acquires TV analysis firm Trendrr

If it wasn’t already clear that Twitter is serious about monitoring TV trends, the company just proved it by acquiring Trendrr. The deal gives Twitter new tools for both tracking social network activity during TV broadcasts and delivering that information to advertisers and media producers. While the two companies aren’t specific regarding their plans, Trendrr is scaling back its operations: its Curatorr service will keep going, but it will stop taking customers for its Trendrr.TV engagement tracker. It will be some time before we see the results of the acquisition, but the increasingly tighter links between Twitter activity and TV suggest that the buyout could prove worthwhile in the long run.

Facebook unveils Trending Topics, makes Graph Search available everywhere in US English

Facebook Graph Search

Facebook must be a little envious of Twitter’s ability to seize on trends — it just started experimenting with Trending Topics, a Timeline card that shows the hottest subjects on the social network. Users can tap a trend to see both public comments and posts, whether or not the contributors are friends. The service is only being tested with a small number of those using Facebook’s mobile website right now. If you’re too impatient for that, the company has a consolation prize: Graph Search is now available to everyone visiting the site in US English, regardless of where they live. The expansion comes with the end to a handy privacy tool that lets members see who can search their Timeline, but Facebook claims that few have been using this feature — we shouldn’t miss it too much.

Here’s something we’ve all been wanting for some time. SwiftKey Cloud is launching today with a bunch of new functionality including — you guessed it — cloud backup and synchronization across multiple devices. By keeping your keyboard profile and settings online, you no longer have to re-teach Swiftkey your typing habits if you upgrade to a new tablet or lose your phone. Trending phrases is another new feature which analyzes relevant and localized phrases that are trending on social networks and other media and adds them daily to the keyboard’s vocabulary. It supports US / UK English and eleven other languages at launch, with more coming in the future. Finally, SwiftKey Cloud makes its easier than before to personalize your keyboard by connecting it with your GMail, Facebook, Twitter and now Yahoo! mail accounts. We’ve been using the beta for about a day now and everything’s working as advertised. Check out the gallery below, then it the break for the promo video and PR.

Google now offers Top Charts and visualization tool for trending topics

Google Trends reveals Top Charts and Hot Search visualization

Instead of waiting until the end of the year for Google’s annual Zeitgeist, you can now find out what’s trending in any given month with a new Top Charts feature from Google Trends. Updated monthly and going back to 2004, Top Charts is built on the Knowledge Graph, so it’s smart enough to house related keywords under one term for more accurate rankings. For example, searches for “giants baseball” and “sf giants” would go toward pushing “San Francisco Giants” up the ranks in a sports-related chart. Right now there are more than 40 top ten lists with more than 140 time periods available for your perusal. In addition to the charts, the Trends team has also rolled out a new visualization tool for “hot searches” that displays trending topics in a large colorful layout — as seen below, you can customize it to display up to 25 searches at a time that endlessly shift and refresh, thus consuming our attention for the entire day.

YouTube Trends Map Displays Most Popular Videos Based On Region, Gender, Age

YouTube Trends Map Displays Most Popular Videos Based On Region, Gender, Age

If you’re a regular YouTube viewer, you’ll know how difficult it is to stumble onto the next big viral video as there are just way too many videos to comb through on a regular basis. That’s why YouTube is taking the initiative to help make it easier for its users to know what is currently trending in their neck of the woods through its new Trends Map.

YouTube’s Trends Map uses regional metrics in order to populate the map of the U.S., which is the first map the service will roll out for now. The Trends Map can be tweaked in order to view what specific genders and age groups are enjoying these days on YouTube, although as of now, it looks like the trailer for the sixth season of HBO’s True Blood is dominating the charts in terms of of the most shares, while the most views is currently going to a video of a water polo player who ends up being a sore loser. The new Trends Map is certainly a fun little tool that we could see using on a regular basis to see what has been deemed to be a viral hit in the U.S.

In an effort to give some visual pizazz to the often dry world of regional metrics, Google has announced a new trends map for its YouTube viewers. While the top video (True Blood‘s season six teaser, if you’re asking) currently dominates across the (for now, US-only) map, there are some Walking Dead fans that can’t get enough bad lip-reading in the North-West. An upgrade from YouTube’s Trends Dashboard, the Trends Map can be tweaked for gender and age profiles, with scrollable bars showing the number of regions in which a video has claimed the top spot. While we’re still not sure how YouTube is assigning the regions just yet, take a look at what’s popular in your locale at the source below.
