Seiki officially prices its 50-inch 4K TV at $1,500 with a late April launch

Seiki 50-inch 4K set

When Seiki’s 4K TV set popped up on retail listings with a price that’s just a fraction of what we’ve seen from its more expensive rivals, we were almost convinced it was a site glitch — that couldn’t be real, could it? The company would like to reassure us that it’s quite serious. The 50-inch Ultra HD set is officially shipping to the US later in April, and it will still carry that regular $1,500 price tag when sales expand from TigerDirect (which claims to have stock today) to include Amazon and QVC, among others. We’d remain cautious about leaping in when Seiki is trying to skip a year or three of the usual commoditization process, but those who insist on their 4K bragging rights won’t have long to wait before they can start boasting.

9 Awesome Gadgets (Plus One Snack) for Broke Geeks

9 Awesome Gadgets (Plus One Snack) for Broke Geeks

Gadgets cost money. A lot of money. And now that you’ve paid your taxes, you probably have no money. But that doesn’t mean denying yourself the joy of a shiny new gizmo to replace the worn-out junk you should have …

Seiku’s 4K 50-inch TV hits shelves at a low $1,299

The steady upward trot of technology has brought us to the trailhead of 4K TVs, which brings ultra-high-definition video to your living or media room, but not without a price tag to match. Such is not the case with Seiku’s 50-inch 4K TV, which is now available for a price tag you’d expect to find on regular HDTVs: $1,299. We’ve got a run down of its specifications after the jump.

Screenshot from 2013-04-13 00:22:46

The television is available from TigerDirect, and is from a maker not previously seen in the United States, meaning you’re going to have to take a risk if you plunk down the cash for this ultra-cheap ultra-HD device. It’ll likely be a couple weeks, at least, before any substantial amount of reviews hit the web to get an idea of the television’s quality and other relevant aspects.

Still, if you’re willing to take the chance, what you’ll get is a 50-inch 4K HDTV with an LED backlight and a resolution of 3840 x 2160. Seiku touts the unit as having minimized pixilation and smooth video via a 120Hz refresh rate and 6.5ms response time. The contrast ratio comes in at 5000:1 for deep blacks and bright white colors.

The television utilizes a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, and has a few different video connection options, including VGA, composite, component, and three HDMI ports. There’s a stereo mini-jack for headphones and coaxial digital audio, as well as two integrated speakers. All the specs point at it being a nice television set, and that aside, at this price, you really can’t beat giving it a shot if a 4K TV is on your wish list.

Wow, You Can Actually Afford This $1300 50-inch 4K LED HDTV

4K TVs are visual deliciousness in a box but are a little (to put it lightly) out of reach for peasants like us as they come with a price tag either equal to the cost of a car or are only considered cheap because they’re graciously not priced like a car. Eyegasms ain’t cheap friends. But one company whose name I’m not even sure how to pronounce is trying to change the whole damn game. SEIKI has a 50-inch 4K TV for only $1,300. Yeah. More »

Panasonic buries rumors of plasma TV’s death

Panasonic plasma TV at CES 2013

A certain demographic of home theater connoisseurs has fretted for a few weeks over talk that Panasonic might end plasma TV production and research — would viewers have to resort to anything so vulgar as… an LCD? No, Panasonic says. Despite earlier claims of frozen development, the company’s merchandising VP Henry Hauser is emphatic that there remains “room for further improvement” in the plasma realm, and that Panasonic fully intends to develop upgrades. The Viera ZT series we saw at CES will be a launchpad for future work, according to the executive. Hauser’s full statement awaits after the break if there are any lingering doubts; for now, it appears that Panasonic values plasma’s distinct qualities as much as the next basement movie maven.

Panasonic Confirms That The ZT60 Will Be Their Last Plasma TV

Panasonic Confirms That The ZT60 Will Be Their Last Plasma TVBack in March, we reported that according to rumors, Panasonic could be pulling out of the plasma TV market and it seems that has been confirmed by the company’s vice president, Kiyoshi Okamoto. Okamoto revealed that the company’s latest plasma TV, the ZT60, will be the last and best plasma panel that will be coming out of the company’s R&D department. However he did state that what this meant was that while R&D of plasma panels would be ceased, production of the devices are expected to continue well into 2014, claiming that they have a responsibility to their customers, and naturally so.

The Verge asked Okamoto if there were plans to bring R&D for plasma back into action one day, but Okamoto denied those plans, claiming that some of their plasma engineers have already been shifted to the OLED department which Panasonic plans to eventually replace its plasma lineup. Plasma TVs were definitely popular back in the day, so in a way it is a bit sad to see an era come to an end, especially since reports have indicated that shipments of plasma have dropped by 23% year-over-year in 2012, compared to the 1% drop for LCD (via NPD).

Samsung launches GALAXY S 4 TV ads showcasing features

Samsung’s GALAXY S 4 is quickly approaching, and it’s expected to launch at the beginning of next month, with pre-orders starting later this month. In the meantime, Samsung is prepping to launch a television ad campaign for the new phone. Several television commercials have popped up on Samsung Netherlands’ YouTube channel, showing off some of the device’s new features.

There’s three ad spots in the total, all of which are roughly just over 30 seconds long. The first one we see shows off the GALAXY S 4′s “Sound Shot” feature, which allows users to take a picture as well as record surrounding noise in order to give the photo more life and energy. Plus, it makes it feel like you’re actually there.

The second features shown off in the series of commercials is “Group Play,” which allows GALAXY S 4 users to share a song with other GALAXY S 4 users over a wireless connection. However, this method involves turning multiple phones into more speakers, allowing for louder playback of a song, since a single phone can’t output loud volumes all too well.

Lastly, Samsung shows off its S Translater app, which lets users who travel abroad communicate with the locals in the area without needing to know the native language. The feature lets users talk into the phone, and it will repeat the phrase back in a different language. It should definitely come in handy for all the globe trotters out there.

Android Central also got a hold of a one-minute-long GALAXY S 4 commercial that’s a bit different than the three ads above. This one guides you through some of the features of the phone, as well as showing off the exterior and the vivid colors that the display can produce. This ad spot hasn’t been uploaded by Samsung yet, but we should be seeing it show up fairly soon.
