Rockstar reportedly threatened to sue TV show over LA Noire name, Take-Two denies claims

Director and writer Frank Darabont, best known for Green Mile and The Walking Dead TV series, claimed that Rockstar Games threatened to sue him and the TNT network for creating a TV show called LA Noir, which Rockstar thought that was too close for comfort with their video game LA Noire. However, Take-Two Interactive, which owns Rockstar, has denied the claims made my Darabont.

la-noire-gameplay

In an interview with io9, Darabont says that Rockstar “threatened to sue the shit out of [him], TNT, every company that actually ever worked in Hollywood. And they have the billions of dollars to back it up, apparently.” Because of that, Darabont says that he’s changing the title of his new TV show from LA Noir to Lost Angels. The show is set in 1947 Los Angeles, and it will star Jon Bernthal.

While the previous name, setting, and timeframe of the new TV series seems dangerously close to Rockstar’s LA Noire video game, Darabont says that the TV show is based on a novel titled “LA Noir,” and has nothing to do with Rockstar’s game. However, while Darabont claims that he was threatened with a lawsuit, Take-Two said that nothing of the sort happened.

Speaking with Joystiq, the game publishing company claims that they only approached TNT in order to “express concern over confusion between the properties,” but say that they have never approached Darabont. The actions that led Darabont to change the name of the show are completely unrelated, according to Take-Two.

ConnecTV adds SocialTV Timeline for mobile, lets us chat with stars on a second screen

ConnecTV represents traditional TV producers’ attempt at second screen content, and having that official blessing carries certain perks. Witness the platform’s newly added SocialTV Timeline for mobile devices: the real-time, synced content feed provides not just expandable info, news and polls in line with ongoing fan conversations, but live chats with TV and sports personas during key shows and events. The SocialTV Timeline isn’t limited to the avaialble iOS or web apps, either; there’s support for syndicating it through other companies’ mobile software and sites. The core ConnecTV apps remain free (if ad-supported), so those who’ve had an inclination to chat with an actor or NFL veteran just need to visit the relevant links to get started.

The SocialTV Timeline launch follows the announcement of ConnecTV’s AdSync Network, which enables “view-sers” to act immediately on relevant television ads and promotions by tapping on synchronized companion ads on their second screen devices: Buy now, get a special promotional offer, watch additional product videos, find the closest store or enter a contest. SocialTV Timeline and the TV AdSync Network comprise the core of ConnecTV’s new social television platform that syncs with every show across more than 400 national channels, local stations and regional sports networks.

The new suite of ConnecTV features launches with an innovative graphical design that showcases the conversation around your favorite shows as well as a one-touch social integration that instantly connects viewers with their friends and followers throughout the social sphere. The design mission: To make TV more engaging, more compelling and more fun.

Consistent with the new design’s focus on driving the conversation around television, ConnecTV showcases its “Watercooler” initiative launched over the summer. Watercooler features national and local celebrities in sports, news, and entertainment chatting about the day’s top news on TV. The Watercooler premiered on ConnecTV around the 2012 London Games with Olympic Gold Medalists Bruce Jenner, Greg Louganis, Aaron Peirsol, Amanda Beard, and Clyde Drexler, and has continued through the new year with pop culture icon Michael Buckley sparking social media conversation around tent-pole programming such as the Golden Globes, “Dancing with the Stars” and “Vampire Diaries.”

ConnecTV’s new mobile interface is designed as a stream of dynamic cells, which, when touched, instantly expand to provide users with more in-depth information and real-time interactive functionality, including purchasing capabilities, in-depth and play-by-play sports statistics, relevant user polls, and connected social media – as well as enabling chat that is synchronized with the show you are watching.

The free ConnecTV app offers companion programming content and social interactivity elements that sync with any program from any TV source: cable, satellite and IPTV – live or time-shifted. ConnecTV uses a proprietary combination of content-recognition algorithms, closed caption data and a diverse mix of content meta-data to drive the accuracy, relevancy and speed of synchronization with broadcast programming – along with a tight technical integration into leading social media networks including Facebook and Twitter.

ConnecTV’s new platform syndication opportunity for SocialTV Timeline and the AdSync Network launches with the top broadcast media companies’ television stations across America: Belo Corp., Cox Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co., Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television Inc., Media General Inc., Meredith Corp., Post-Newsweek Stations, Raycom Media and Schurz Communications.

Apple TV sells over 2 million units in Q1 2013

During Apple’s Q1 2013 earnings call today, Apple CEO Tim Cook says that the company sold over 2 million Apple TV units during the three-month quarter. This is a 60% increase year-over-year — in other words, Apple has sold a record amount of Apple TVs this last quarter than any other quarter before.

heroshot-580x421

As he mentioned in the TV interview with Brian Williams a while back, television is “an area of intense interest” for Apple, and what was once a small niche for Apple, is now an area that the company wants to capitalize on. Cook says that “there is a lot we can contribute to the space,” but he resisted sharing any more information on the subject.

We’ve already heard plenty of rumors about an Apple television set, including hearsay that Sharp is working on some display panels for the rumored television, while Foxconn is said to be testing various models of the Apple television, including sizes that range from 46 inches to 55 inches. Obviously, we’re keeping the salt by our sides until we hear something from Apple, but it leaves us with many questions.

So, while we didn’t really get anymore information out of the Apple execs as far as their plans for a possible Apple television set, we were told that the television sector is something that Apple is at least interested in, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up diving deep into the industry to supplement its Apple TV STB.

Netflix Q4 2012 earnings tout 6 million new users and $8 million in profit

Q4 2012 earnings are rolling in, folks, and Netflix is the latest to report on their quarterly progress. The movie and TV-streaming company announced today that they gained 6 million new users during Q4, bringing the total number of users over 33 million, with 27 million users in the US alone. They also announced a Q4 revenue of $945 million, with $8 million of that being all profits.

netflix

Netflix had previously expected around 26 to 27 million US streaming subscribers, so the company’s goal was easily met, and as or international users overall, this time last year saw a rise of 1.9 million users during Q4 2011, so the service is certainly gaining steam, and from what Netflix has planned for this year, we think that steam will keep up for a while.

2012 was a big year for Netflix, and 2013 looks to be even bigger. The company plans to roll out two TV shows exclusive to Netflix: House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, and an Arrested Development reboot, starring most of the original cast, including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, and Will Arnett.

The company has also been continuously working on getting studios signed on to stream their movies and TV shows on Netflix. Just recently, they signed on Turner, Warner Bros., and even Disney. And along with the extra content that Netflix will provide starting this year, you can guarantee that their catalog will only continue to grow.

XBMC turns your Android into a user-friendly media hub: here’s how

XBMC for Android has essentially been available since July, but it was only in beta and nightly form, up until now. While it’s not an official XBMC app for Android (but rather a third-party initiative), the developers are claiming that this final version is “user friendly” and will run on most, if not all Android devices.

Screen Shot 2013-01-18 at 11.00.14 AM

If you found that the beta versions were a bit on the complex side to set up, then you’ll definitely want to check out this latest XBMC installment. However, there are still a few steps you’ll have to do before you’re fully up and running, but it’s by far much easier than it used to be. Here’s how to set up the new app.

You’ll first need to install MX Player on your Android device. It’s available in the Google Play store for free, so there’s no up-front costs you’ll have to make. Once its downloaded and installed, you’ll want to launch MX Player and exit it at least once before installing XBMC. We’re not sure why this is, but we’re told that it’s needed in order to continue.

Next, download and install the “XAF Custom Build of XBMC” to your Android device. To do this, you’ll want to navigate to this page on your device’s web browser and then click on the appropriate download link. There are links for both non-NEON and NEON devices. To see which one your device is, navigate to proc/cpuinfo in Root Explorer or other file browser on your handset. If you’re not rooted, you’ll need to download Android System Info.

Once all that’s done, you can now launch XBMC and get started managing and watching your video files. It’s important to note that if you encounter any errors along the way, make sure to enable “Unknown Sources” under Security -> Device Administration in Settings. Again, it might not be as user friendly as you originally thought, but it’s really only a matter of installing a couple of apps before you’re able to dig in.

Samsung Chalkboard TV Pre-Order Going For $38,000

samsung chalkboard Samsung Chalkboard TV Pre Order Going For $38,000So you think you have a tidy sum sitting in your bank account for you to spend, but are not quite sure on what new device you should splurge on? Perhaps we might be able to persuade you with the introduction of the Samsung Chalkboard TV, an 85-inch behemoth that looks more like a chalkboard than a TV itself. In reality, this $38,000 monster is their latest flagship S9 UHD (Ultra HD) TV which is available for pre-order in South Korea at 40 million won, translating approximately to $38,000 as mentioned above.

Apparently, only 77 units of these are available for pre-order at the moment, but it would be nicer to round up the figure to 85 in order to have it correspond with the number of inches, no? It is also interesting to note that Samsung might even have plans to roll out a 110-inch version of the chalkboard TV, and what kind of prices are we looking at here? $50,000 would not be out of the park, really.

Top Windows Phone 8 app will be awarded free TV advertisement

Microsoft will feature one lucky app in a Windows Phone 8 TV advertisement via its Windows Phone Next App Star contest. The contest is open to global Windows Phone developers, whose apps will be judged by both quality and ratings. A total of 64 apps will be selected to undergo public voting, with each being awarded some type of award.

windows phone

Developers who want to participate will need to opt-in to the contest via the Dev Center by March 5, while those who are not yet ready to publish their app can still participate by registering now and making sure their app is live by the March 5 cutoff. Each entry will be reviewed by Microsoft for a combination of user ratings and quality, with Windows Phone 8 feature implementation getting a specific mention.

The top 64 apps will be selected from the entries and will then be subjected to public voting. Says Microsoft, the apps will undergo a “head-to-head, bracket-style competition.” Over the course of several weeks, the entries will be halved on a regular basis so that the 64 entries are narrowed to 32, then 16, etc. The last app standing will receive the grand prize.

The grand prize is ad placement in a primetime Windows Phone TV commercial in the United States. Other developers will receive lesser prizes, such as a Dev Center 1-year subscription and a Nokia Lumia 920. Says Microsoft: “This isn’t just about picking the most popular app in the Store. Windows Phone Next App Star is about giving developers a shot at being the next big hit. You don’t have to be a longtime developer on the Windows Phone platform — even a newcomer can win fans and win big.”
