Thought Samsung’s 85-inch Ultra HD TV was huge? Wait ’til you see the 110-incher…

Samsung’s Ultra HD TV reveal at CES yesterday was certainly impressive, but the company only brought out its “smallest” set to show on stage – there’s a 110-inch behemoth waiting in the wings. Having joked that the larger model – which sits at the top of a three set line-up, with a 95-incher in-between – wouldn’t fit through the doors of the conference hall where it held its opening presentation, Samsung saved the largest Ultra HD for an eye-searing display on its stand.

The set has the same specifications as the 85-inch model we got up close with yesterday, namely 4k resolution and an array of speakers embedded in the easel-style stand. It’s far more dominating, however, somehow making the smaller version look almost practical.

That “practicality” is an illusion, of course; Samsung isn’t talking specific pricing at this stage, but it has conceded that mainstream Ultra HD is probably five years out right now. Since it will take roughly the same sort of time for 4k content to proliferate, that’s plenty of time for people to save up.

CES is definitely shaping up to be the show with Ultra HD as its theme, and Samsung has some competition for the 4k crown. Keep up with all the show news at our CES 2013 Hub.

Panasonic 4K OLED TV eyes-on (video)

Panasonic 4K OLED TV eyeson

Panasonic wasn’t about to let Sony one-up it in the 4K OLED arena, and announced its own 56-inch UltraHD prototype the day after its competitor outed a very similar panel here at CES 2013. We’d never tire of the luscious combination of 4k and OLED, so we couldn’t wait to high-tail it to the Panasonic booth to gaze at new screen in its full glory. As with the Sony model, it sucks you into the screen with the level of detail, brightness, ultra-dark blacks and vivid colors — which looked accurate to our eyes, an area in which OLED can fall down. Other than that impression, there were no other technical details or specs for the prototype display, and none of the Panasonic types we spoke to had any idea either. We’re not likely to see such a model on sale anytime before 2014, and when it does arrive, you’ll probably need all the digits on one hand for the number of figures in the price. Check the gallery below for images, or head after the break for a short video — which doesn’t remotely do the panel justice, natch.

Aereo plans to launch its streaming TV service in 22 more cities this year

Aereo plans to launch its streaming TV service in 22 more cities this year

Ever since its humble (and very ambitious) beginnings, Aereo has suffered a few hiccups along the way, but that’s not stopping the service from kicking off the new year with a rather striving scheme. The company today announced that it’s expanding outside of NYC and bringing its over-the-air TV broadcasts to 22 more US cities in 2013, with said move expected to reach cities such as Boston, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Baltimore, Denver, Detroit and Washington, DC. According to Aereo’s CEO, Chet Kanojia, the firm’s been “working hard to bring Aereo to consumers across the country and we’re excited to expand our reach to these 22 new cities,” adding that “consumers want and deserve choice.” Dear, Chet, we wholeheartedly agree. The full list of new markets can be found in the PR after the break, and we can only hope there’s plenty more to come as the year progresses.

Radioline Goes to the Connected TVs with Mstar and to the Car with Parrot

Radioline TV Radioline Goes to the Connected TVs with Mstar and to the Car with Parrot

Radioline TV interface – please note that this might not be the final interface that will be displayed in various TVs

[CES 2013] Radioline is the new kid on the block in the online radio world and today, the radio aggregator announced that it will be in connected TVs, via a partnership with Mstar and in the car, via a partnership with Parrot.

Launched in October 2012 for iOS, Radioline is an iPhone application that aggregates over 25,000 radio stations and 11,000 podcasts. The application is the consumer facing product of the company which also operates a cloud-based mobile internet radio portal solution and provides MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) and Service Providers with its white labeled technology.

I have tried Radioline briefly when it was released and the experience was good. I could find rapidly  any radio I wanted, including the European ones. Its vintage look, reminiscent of the golden age of radio, is a great differentiator from similar services such as TuneIn or Stitcher.  In case you own an Asteroid from Parrot, you will also be able to try Radioline yourself in your car.

LG announces US availability for OLED TV

A few days back we mentioned that LG had started taking pre-orders in Korea for its new 55-inch WRGB OLED TV set. That TV pre-order would cost you the equivalent of $10,000 in Korea. LG has announced this week that it will be making its incredibly thin OLED TV available in the United States starting in March.

Deliveries of the TV to Korean customers are set to begin in February. If you thought the Korean price, which worked out to $10,000 here in the US was expensive; you won’t like the official US pricing at all. LG has confirmed that the MSRP for the TV in the United States will be $11,999.

One of the hallmarks of the OLED TV is an incredibly thin design that is only 4 mm thick. The TV also weighs less than 22 pounds and promises exceptional color reproduction along with vivid and realistic images. The TV uses LG’s unique Four Color Pixel system with a white sub pixel working with conventional red, blue, and green pixels to create the perfect color.

The TV also has LG’s exclusive Color Refiner technology to provide greater tonal enhancement that results in images that are more vibrant and natural. The TV also has an infinite contrast ratio that maintains optimal contrast levels regardless of ambient light or viewing angles.
