Toshiba Cloud TV

Toshiba demonstrated what the company calls its “Cloud TV” at an event in Las Vegas tonight, and I was curious to know how this technology is different from the regular “Connected TV” that we all know. A Toshiba representative told me that the Toshiba Cloud solution makes the TVs “smarter” than the regular connected TV. The terms “Smart” and “Cloud” are so overused in technology marketing, that we do not know what it exactly means any more.

Basically, Toshiba’s Cloud TV allows people to share files in the cloud such as photos, or share calendars or play multiplayer games using tablets, smartphones and the TV. I saw a demo of a poker game played by four people on different Android devices, each of them viewing its own cards, the TV acted as the poker table. Other connected TVs do not allows such interactions.

LG 84-inch Ultra HD 4k 3D TV Eyes-on

In case you haven’t been following along with the latest and greatest TVs, the hottest new thing is 4k. Also being called Ultra HD for its eye-numbing ultra-high def resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. Back in late October LG launched their first 4K TV in the US, the 84-inch $20,000 TV and we got a few quick pictures of it in action.

Here at CES 2013 the brand new LG 84-inch Ultra HD 3D TV was taking up some much needed real estate, and LG was equipping our eager eyes with their new lightweight 3D glasses — no syncing required. The bad boy you see above is officially called the LG 84LM9600. It’s really hard to explain it without you seeing for yourself. The images are exceptionally clear and so realistic I feel like I could touch them.

Then don’t get us started on 3D. Many of our quick hands-on pictures are of the impressive TV blasting 3D images so they don’t quite do it justice, but it really is something to look at. With over 8 million pixels — 4 times that of regular “HD TVs” — the Ultra HD 4K TV brings in-home entertainment to an entirely new level.

In case you missed the launch date news, this TV certainly isn’t cheap. It’s available as of late late 2012 at your favorite retailer for the low price of only $20,000. Or basically a nice new car. As you can imagine, most content available today doesn’t come in those crazy high 4K resolutions — but they’ll be available soon. Get that GoPro Hero 3 Black edition and shoot some Ultra HD video for your enjoyment. Who’s buying?

Dish Explorer for iPad steers Hopper DVRs, tells TV watchers what’s trending

Dish Explorer for iPad steers Hopper DVRs, goes beyond the TV guide

Dish was quick to take advantage of its Sling Media integration with remote live TV, but it hasn’t put as much of an emphasis on what happens when we’re still sitting comfortably in our living rooms. It’s filling that hole with the launch of its Explorer app for the iPad. Viewers with a Hopper DVR can control their set-top box directly from the tablet, as you’d expect, but they’ll also get a companion to whatever they’re watching, whether it’s live or recorded. Explorer catches the buzz around a show on Facebook and Twitter, including rankings if you’d like to see what shows are the hottest; it also builds in Thuuz sports stats and ratings to identify what’s likely to be the big game for the day, even as it’s happening. The app doesn’t officially reach the App Store until Monday, and there’s no word of an Android port, but we’ll be sure to share our first-hand experiences as soon as possible.

ASUS and others to show off new Google TV devices at CES 2013

Google may not have had the 2012 they wanted with their Google TV platform, but it looks like they’re going to start things off right in 2013, with a slew of new Google TV devices being unveiled at CES 2013 next week. ASUS, as well as Hisense and TCL, all three of which will be new to the platform, but companies like LG, Vizio, and Sony will also be showing new devices next week as well.

Google-TV

In a blog post on the official Google TV blog, the company announced that a handful of companies will be showing off new Google TV devices, including ASUS, who are new to the platform. Google says these companies “will show off the newest Google TV platform,” including “set-top boxes, integrated TVs, and IPTV boxes.”

Of course, the most notable company in the mix is ASUS, who is already rumored to release the Qube, which made its way through the FCC back in November. The Qube may also be part of Google’s Nexus lineup, which would make it the flagship Google TV device. It certainly wouldn’t be surprising, since ASUS is the company behind Google’s ever-popular Nexus 7 tablet.

As far as new partners, Google says it has nine partners in total for the TV software, with the major holdouts being Samsung (which has previously announced Google TV products, but haven’t yet released anything) and Panasonic. Of course, we’ll be there at CES 2013 all next week to bring you the latest coverage.

Amazon Prime Instant Video adds A&E, History, and Lifetime shows

For those wanting even more TV shows to stream to their computer screens, Amazon has you covered. The company inked a deal with A&E, History, Lifetime, and Bio channels to bring “popular series” like Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, and Dance Moms to Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service. The deal comes after Netflix lost these networks a few months ago.

Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t say what all TV shows are coming to Prime Instant Video, but we’re guessing most of the popular selections from each network will make their appearance on the streaming video service. The content licensing deal comes only a few months after Neflix’s negotiations with A&E fell through, meaning that Amazon Prime Instant Video is the only place you can watch many of these shows.

Amazon says it plans to continue to beef up its Prime Instant Video service by adding more content in the future, and they note that they have more than doubled the content offering in just a year. Back in August, the service offered 22,000 TV show episodes and movies, but that figure has now risen to more than 33,000.

A&E and its sister channels already allow free access to their shows online, but that only includes current seasons of shows. With Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service, you’ll get served with over 33,000 TV shows episodes and movies, and are available for Prime subscribers to watch for free, assuming you already have the $79/year Prime subscription.

Sony reportedly plans to launch its own online TV service

Sources have told Variety that Sony is working on its own online TV service that we might see go live later this year. This comes after news that Intel will be launching a set-top box that is part DVR, part content delivery system. Not a lot of information is available, but what has been revealed is a plan to likely undercut traditional cable and satellite providers while giving consumers a broadband-delivered television experience.

Sony-logo

The service is expected to be a packaged content sort of subscription, meaning that customers won’t be able to pick and choose individual channels to subscribe to. According to the sources, Sony is currently negotiating with two “major content companies” for channel licensing. Some of the companies that have been approached are said to be skeptical about whether the online service will ever actually be launched, but that thus far negotiations are moving forward.

If all this sounds familiar, it is because this isn’t the first time Sony has looked into entering the TV content business. Back in 2011, Sony made a move towards delivering broadband television content via Internet-enabled TVs. While the sources state that Sony is more serious this time than last, the biggest hinderance to such a move is cost, something that is particularly important to the currently-struggling Sony, which has suffered layoffs and financial blows.

Still, if all works out and Sony presses ahead with this plan, it could have the potential to be lucrative, and bolster sales of its other devices, such as the PlayStation 3 and Bravia television sets. There’s no word on whether the TV service would be limited to Sony’s devices, or if it would be available to a wider consumer base. Not surprisingly, Sony declined commenting on the rumors.

Google bringing YouTube Android app pairing, updated UI to more TVs

Google updated its YouTube app for Android back in November to allow for pairing with TVs equipped with Google TV, and it looks we’ll soon be seeing quite a few more sets ready to work with your smartphone or tablet. The company confirmed today that new TVs from Bang & Olufsen, LG, Panasonic and Sony will be making their debut at CES, with additional sets and set-top boxes coming from Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio, Western Digital and others over the course of 2013. In related news, Google’s announced that its new UI for YouTube on TV — previously seen on the Wii U and PlayStation 3 — will also be featured on those new devices, offering full 1080p videos and a fairly minimalist interface. You can check out a quick video of how the pairing works after the break.
