Amazon Prime Instant Video adds Warner TV shows

Amazon has signed a deal with Warner Brothers Television that will see the online retailer gaining access to televisions shows such as Fringe, The West Wing, and Alcatraz for its Prime Instant Video service. Anyone who subscribes to Amazon Prime gains access to on-demand movies and TV shows that can be accessed via a multitude of devices, and now Warner’s TV catalogue will be added to the list of available content.

Amazon says that Fringe and The West Wing will be available this summer exclusively on Prime Instant Video, a subtle dig, perhaps, at Netflix and other streaming services. Customers will be able to watch video on a wide variety of devices like the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Roku streamers, plus various tablets. As of writing, Prime Instant Video has around 18,000 movies and TVs ready to stream.

The popular online retailer has been ramping up its content deal as of late. Earlier in the year it added shows from The Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, plus movies from Magnolia Pictures. The company is also hoping to produce original content for Prime Instant Video, a similar strategy to Netflix and Hulu. Amazon began accepting pitches for shows back in May, with successful writers getting a chance to earn $10,000 if the company options the idea.

Amazon deal brings Warner TV shows including Fringe, The West Wing to Prime Instant Video exclusively

The battle between Amazon’s Prime Instant Video and Netflix Watch Instantly continues to heat up, with Amazon following up a slew of rollouts on new devices like the Xbox 360 and the addition of a queue by locking up some exclusive TV content from Warner Bros. According to the press release (included after the break) Amazon’s agreement means episodes of Fringe and The West Wing will be “On Prime Instant Video First” and not on other streaming services for the summer. Stats show and Netflix has repeatedly indicated that subscribers view more TV content than movies on these types of services so content exclusives may become even more important differentiators. Other shows specifically named include Dark Blue, Alcatraz and The Whole Truth, hit up the Prime site to see any other less prominent names that may have escaped mention.

LG’s 84-inch 4K TV on sale in Korea from August

If you’re not content with 1080p on your big screen TV, then fear not: manufacturers are starting to roll out their 4K TVs, though you’ll have to pay a small fortune to get your hands on one. LG will be selling its new 84-inch 3840×2160 TV in South Korea towards the end of August, and is currently taking pre-orders. The company will be showing off the television in stores across the country, but quantities of the set will be limited.

There will only be 84 of the TVs available to buy, though at ₩25 million (~$21,925) there probably won’t be many customers seeking them out. LG will be throwing in some extra goodies too, including a 2.2 speaker system, some 3D glasses, and a 3D camcorder valued at around ₩300,000 (~$263). LG will even hook the TV up for you for free: we should certainly hope so considering the gigantic size and price.

South Korea may be seeing the TV first, but LG is planning on bringing the set to other destinations around the world, including the United States, Europe, and Latin America. The company says it should arrive sometime in the second half of the year, so that should give you some time to figure out how to get your hands on some 4K content and save up the necessary money.

Apps popular among smart TV owners, unknown by everyone else

Among people who own an Internet-connected TV, the overwhelmingly favorite apps are ones like Netflix and YouTube. But surprisingly, Facebook is also near the top of the list. 35% of those with a smart TV say that the social networking platform is a “must-have” app for the device. Internet radio Pandora is also popular, with 28% of owners calling that a must-have TV app.

The poll, conducted by Harris Interactive, did not require users to limit their responses to just one app. It simply asked what they considered to be must-have titles. With that in mind, here’s the complete top-five breakdown: 47% Netflix, 44% YouTube, 35% Facebook, 34% Amazon Instant Video, and 28% Pandora. However, there is another part of this story, which is awareness of smart TV in general.

Of the people surveyed who did not own an Internet-connected TV, 33% said they were “not at all familiar” with smart TVs, and 39% said they were “not that familiar.” That’s nearly three-quarters of the segment who don’t even fully understand the power of Internet-enabled TVs. “This could be a major barrier to future purchase consideration, as only 7% of those who are not familiar with Smart TV are likely to purchase a Smart TV within the next 12 months,” Harris said in a statement.

Samsung confirms Angry Birds TV app plans

Samsung and Rovio are going after a couple different segments of the population – those who own an Internet-connected Samsung TV and have somehow managed to never play Angry Birds, and those who own an Internet-connected Samsung TV and cannot get enough Angry Birds. Given that the former consists of people who have never downloaded Angry Birds on their phone or tablet, and never downloaded it onto a game console, it’s the latter category that is probably the bigger chunk here.

Samsung announced today that it will bring the popular mobile-game-turned-worldwide-phenomenon to its smart TV platform, confirming earlier rumblings about such news. The game will launch on Samsung LED sets with models numbers of 7500 or higher, in addition to plasma sets with model number 8000 or higher. The download will be free, likely with ads to provide a monetary stream to Rovio and Samsung.

Rovio has understandably been completely focused on Angry Birds for the last three years, which has made its way to traditional game consoles as a downloadable title, been introduced to stores with a whole line of retail merchandise, got a tie-in with the theatrical animated film Rio, and is accessible via download codes in the Blu-ray version of the 20th Century Fox flick. It was only a matter of time before it started getting embedded into TVs.

Samsung 75-inch ES9000 smart TV makes stateside debut: on sale in August for $9,999

Samsung 75inch ES9000 smart TV makes stateside debut on sale in August for $9,999

The mammoth 75-inch ES9000 LED smart TV that Samsung recently unveiled for the Korean market is making its way stateside. Today the 3D-capable, LED-backlit set was on display in New York as part of the Sammy-sponsored SpaceFest marking the Space Shuttle Enterprise’s arrival at the Intrepid. How smart TVs relate to Space Shuttle orbiters is beyond us, but the ES9000’s US debut is welcome news for those with a massive living room to fill, and were disappointed after the ES8000 75-incher shown at CES and even given a price tag earlier this year failed to materialize.

Detailed specs are currently MIA, but as we noted before in our hands-on, the 75-incher’s bezel measures just 0.31 inches, and the frame sports a rose-gold finish. There’s also a built-in web camera that retracts when not in use, and the TV comes with four pairs of 3D glasses. Being a smart TV, this guy also includes the full suite of Smart TV features, such as Smart Interaction for enabling gesture and voice controls and Smart Content for sharing media across several devices. Samsung also used today’s occasion to introduce a new Angry Birds app for its smart TVs, which lets users play the game entirely with gesture controls. The app will be available for a free download later this month, and the ES9000 will go on sale in August for a super-sized price of $9.999. Check out the PR below for more info.

TiVo acquires TV analytics firm TRA

In its ever-growing bid to remain relevant in an industry dominated by integrated devices and the death of independent set-top boxes, TiVo has purchased a company called TRA for some $20 million. TRA specializes in making business sense out of customer TV viewing habits, and TiVo thinks it can use that data to keep itself profitable.

What TRA does is match television viewing activity with purchase activity. The company is able to examine 1.5 million homes, tracks what they watch on TV, and then uses various methods to determine what products those households purchase. TRA has clients like CBS, A&E, ION Media, Procter & Gamble, Oscar Mayer, and Starcom MediaVest Group.

So what does TiVo want to do with this information? It wants to develop a new Research and Analytics unit, which it could provide to corporate customers. In addition to TRA’s platform, it can also bring its own insights into the equation. TiVo is able to directly map viewhing habits and purchase behavior by allowing e-commerce transactions to occur through the TiVo box.

Most Americans use their phones while watching TV (study)

TextingIf you’re the kind of person to reach for your smartphone during every commercial break whenever you’re watching TV – you’re not alone. According to a recent study from Pew Research, it looks like cellphone (and smartphone) usage during TV-watching sessions is becoming the norm. From a group of 2,254 people in March and April 2012, 38% of those surveyed said they used their phones to keep them busy during the advertisements. 22% used their phones to check to see if something during mentioned the show was true or not (I did this pretty often when watching Breaking Bad!), 11% used their phones to see what other people online were saying about the show, 11% used their phones to comment about a program they were watching and only 6% used their phones to vote for reality show contestants.
