PlayStation 4 adds Twitch as livestreaming partner, service ‘likely’ available at launch

PlayStation 4 adds Twitch as livestreaming partner, service 'likely' available at launch

I share, you share, we all share video game video — or, at least, that’s the promise of the rapidly encroaching next generation of consoles. With Twitch now officially joining Sony’s PS4 as an additional livestreaming partner, gamers will have one more option (the other being Ustream) to broadcast gameplay when they press that Share button. The announcement, made at this year’s Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, positions Twitch advantageously on both Sony and Microsoft’s warring black boxes as an inbuilt app, although the similarities may end there. As Matthew DiPietro, Twitch’s VP of Marketing, explained to us, “The product itself and the feature set that will actually be available on both of the consoles is still a little bit up in the air because they’re actively being produced right now… but the key sort of feature set is clear.” So crucial elements like video broadcast and viewing, picture-in-picture and audio capture — all basic functions currently enjoyed by the service’s 600,000-strong user base — will be de facto at launch.

But does that mean Day One or when the app launches? “Most likely for PS4 that’s Day One and we’re working on that for Xbox One,” DiPietro said, so there’s no guarantee. But he was able to elaborate a little more on how search will work when the service goes live, adding that “[Discovery] will be a very similar experience to the Twitch website and Twitch mobile applications. You can browse by game, by channel [and] we’re exploring ways to explore by genre.” You’d think, then, that the ability to filter video via your friends list would also make the cut, but that sorting feature’s not something users can expect initially. Rather, it’s something DiPietro said could come at a later date.

It’s clear that Twitch’s UI across both PS4 and Xbox One is still a work in progress, or “squishy” as DiPietro obliquely put it. But what’s not clear is how users will select and launch the app, or if they’ll even be able to set Twitch sharing as default — he couldn’t say more. And while Twitch is essentially free to use, it remains to be seen whether or not console access to its video sharing service will be put behind a pay wall à la PS Plus or Xbox Gold. “That’s entirely up to Sony,” he said, and by Sony’s own very public E3 promise, a remote possibility. Although, as Microsoft’s recently proven again and again, you can never say never.

Twitch update for iOS more than triples live channels, revamps chat

Twitch update for iOS more than triples live channels, revamps chat

Twitch streams a lot of events these days, and it’s improving its iOS app to keep up with the flood of new content. The just-posted 2.3.5 update more than triples the number of accessible live channels from 200 to over 750, giving viewers a better chance of seeing a local tourney or a “let’s play” feed. Chat has also received a thorough makeover that brings both a simpler design and support for Twitch’s unique take on emoticons. And if you’re a dedicated Dota 2 player, you’ll definitely want this upgrade — link your Steam account and you’ll earn item drops in Valve’s arena battler when watching certain streams. There’s no word of corresponding updates for Android or other platforms, although Twitch says it’s improving channel capacities across all its apps.

DNP Twitch Android app update adds followed channel viewing, still no search or chat

An update for the Twitch.tv app on Android is finally letting users log into their accounts, providing easier access to their personal favorites out of the top 300 live streaming channels. Features still not accounted for include search and chat, however Community Manager Jared Rea mentions they’re in the works. According to Rea, development of its Android app — until three months ago it had gone a year without being updated — received “yet another incentive” with the launch of the Ouya gaming console. Hit the links below for the new app, info on its development and the top-300 channel restriction that applies whether you’re watching on a console or handheld device.

Xbox One Upload Studio lets you share your gameplay vids, live streams through Twitch

Sharing clips of your gameplay has become quite a popular past time. Microsoft is streamlining the process on the Xbox One with Upload Studio, a dedicated tool for editing, theming and sharing videos of you blasting baddies and beating up your friends. Though a lot of the details are still a mystery, we can tell you that it uses the system’s “game DVR” which automatically records your gaming sessions. And, if you’d prefer to live stream your Forza runs, Twitch is built-in for broadcasting your race to the world.

Twitch takes over streaming duties for PAX, New York Comic Con

Twitch takes over streaming duties for PAX, New York Comic Con

The folks in charge of running America’s largest biannual gaming event are teaming up with gaming’s most popular streaming solution to offer streams of PAX Prime, PAX East, and New York Comic Con going forward. The company behind all three conventions, ReedPOP, are working in conjunction with Twitch.tv to offer live broadcasts from the aforementioned three shows, as well as Chicago’s Comic & Entertainment Expo. ReedPOP also runs PAX Australia, though it looks like Twitch isn’t handling that streaming as well.

Twitch’s biggest competitor in the streaming space, Ustream, secured a deal with Sony to handle streaming from the company’s forthcoming PlayStation 4 game console. Microsoft’s Xbox One can also handle streaming — Xbox One distinguished engineer Nick Baker told Engadget, “We architected in several components to allow that. We have a video hardware encoder, h.264, and the ability to essentially screen scrape. Take your output without having to render two separate images. Take your output, feed that back to memory, compress it, save it, stream it to a companion device. The hardware has the capability.” Microsoft has yet to announce a plan for how its streaming will work on Xbox One, but we imagine we’ll know much more as of next week.

Twitch video platform for gamers comes to Xbox 360, watch and play from the same place (video)

Twitch gaming video platform comes to Xbox 360, watch and play from the same place

How does a dedicated gamer relax when they’re finally beat on Call of Duty? Surely by watching others suffer the same fate, right? Well, now that just got even easier with an official Twitch app for Xbox 360. The game-centric video service finds a natural home on the console, which could go some way to augment the platform’s already 34-million strong audience (or at least prevent hundreds of wasted gaming calories used when switching screens). It’s not clear if there will be the option to bring your premium credentials along with you. But, we do know the app will bring access to the top 300 live Twitch channels, albeit initially only for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Still, as a dedicated gamer, you probably already are one, right?

Twitch goes premium with Turbo: no ads and priority support for $9 a month

Now, to boost its bottom line and please the more ardent ad-haters out there, the service is rolling out a premium tier of service dubbed Twitch Turbo. For $8.99 per-month customers not only get to avoid being bombarded with product pitches, they’ll also enjoy an enhanced chat tool with custom emoticons, colors and a special badge identifying them as a paying subscriber. Not to mention priority customer support. Those who don’t want to cough up a monthly fee can still watch all their favorite e-sport broadcasts for free, so don’t get all panicky. The launch follows recent moves by the platform to expand support to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and promises to support OUYA when it starts shipping. Hit up the source link to sign up for yourself.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 adds live Twitch streaming for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 (update: timing)

Call of Duty Black Ops 2

Shooter fans who’ve wanted to show their skills (or endure peer judgment) in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 through a live broadcast have usually had to go the YouTube route. That’s fine for many, but some gamers will want to serve their own kind above all — so it’s with some relief that Treyarch is adding built-in streaming to the more game-focused Twitch video service. The new option will send both live audio and video from Black Ops 2 as long as there’s an active Twitch account, as well as share word of exploits through Facebook or Twitter. Anyone committed enough to have a Call of Duty Elite subscription can also get a peek at a player’s stats. Neither Treyarch nor Twitch has said exactly how soon they’ll flick the livestreaming switch, although Wii U owners are once again left high and dry when Twitch support is limited to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 3 owners.

Update: The company tells us that Twitch should be available as of noon Eastern.
