Twitter updates Android and iOS apps

Twitter app updateFollowing yesterday’s announcement of upgrades to Twitter’s website, Twitter announced today that it has released new updates to its iOS and Android apps. The new features of the apps include: the ability to expand apps that let you view content from partner sites from the Twitter app itself (i.e. instead of opening the web browser to take you to a Kickstarter project, you can play its video directly in the Tweet details view in the app), search autocomplete improvements, and push notification support for Tweets from your favorite Twitter accounts.

The updates for the Twitter apps are now live and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store (for free). Be sure to check update your official Twitter apps if you want to experience the new features mentioned above.

Twitter for iPhone and Android Updated with Expanded View, Custom Notifications and More [Twitter]

After rumors suggested that Twitter’s mobile apps were due for an update, the goods arrived today, bringing a handful of substantial updates, including expanded tweets (viewing links, videos, and images inline), the ability to set notifications for individual people you follow, search autocomplete, and new discovery tools for events. Twitter 43 for Android, iOS expands Etsy and Kickstarter tweets, becomes extrasensitive to your notification needs

That was fast. Just days after Twitter 4.3 had its details prematurely spilled all over the Internet, it’s now raring to go for both Android (as version 3.3) and iOS users. Like we’d seen in early release notes, its focus is on expanding tweets to provide a glimpse at content when linking beyond just photos. Along with showing snippets from news outlets such as C-SPAN, Twitter’s app now teases content from Etsy, Kickstarter and Vimeo, among others — just in case you’d like to know whether that upcoming game console is worth funding at a glance. Notifications are getting their own promised boost and can send an alert whenever certain Twitter accounts post any kind of update. The improved search autocomplete shows its face as well, and iOS users get a more advanced layout for tracking hashtags during live events. Users with other smartphone platforms will have to wait for the 4.3 feature set to filter through to their devices, but if you’re of an Apple or Google bent, one of Twitter’s bigger updates of recent memory is already headed your way.

AT&T U-Verse iPad app adds more streaming video, new sports and sharing features

AT&T UVerse iPad app adds more streaming video, new sports and sharing features

AT&T launched an iPad app earlier this year and it’s recently been updated with a few new features for subscribers to the service bringing it closer to the vision of the ComplenTV app we saw demonstrated at CES. Now, it can link directly to your U-Verse TV box to pull in up to the minute companion content for any sports events might be watching like scores, reviews of previous games and schedules, or share what you’re watching to Twitter and Facebook. Also available for all iOS devices is an expanded lineup of video on-demand content including HBO(R), Cinemax(R), Starz, Encore, Movieplex and Music Choice videos. Also recently added for the iPhone and iPod touch is a full remote control with DVR and guide controls, just like the iPad app already had. There’s more details on the free apps in the press release after the break, or in their descriptions on iTunes.

Twitter for iOS 4.3 gets early teases from Twitter itself and the App Store, promises gobs of in-tweet content

Twitter for iOS 43 gets early teases from Twitter itself and the App Store, promises gobs of intweet content

Twitter has been making a push for expanded tweets in mobile, and there’s now some very strong indications that its native apps’ tweets will get extra-stuffed in the near future. Some skulking around the future App Store layout from 9to5 Mac reader Sonny Dickson has shown an as yet unreleased Twitter 4.3 release carrying “more interactive experiences” for links within certain posts — in other words, expect a multimedia extravaganza if a friend really digs that New York Times article. Notifications should also get a much-needed refinement through an end to overly aggressive alerts in-app while bringing in selective, by-user notifications to find out when Mark Zuckerberg finally posts again. While Twitter has stayed mostly hush-hush on the update, the company’s own corporate development VP Kevin Thau couldn’t contain himself: his attempt to one-up Facebook this weekend showed a slightly redesigned iOS app that most certainly isn’t sitting on our own devices. Controversies from The Next Web over the update’s identification of third-party apps notwithstanding — we don’t know if it’s intentional — all signs point to Twitter on iOS (and no doubt Android) getting a tune-up before long.

Soda Versus Pop, Visualized [Visualization]

The route to answering the big questions these days—like, soda or pop?—is to grab a bunch of data from Twitter and analyze it. Which is exactly what Edwin Chen, a data scientist at Twitter, decided to do. More »

Twitter for iPhone 4.3 update changelog leaked

There are a wealth of Twitter apps to choose from on iOS, but the official client looks to be receiving a big update that should bolster its functionality and bring it up to speed with third-party offerings. 9to5Mac discovered the changelog for Twitter 4.3 through the redesigned App Store for iOS 6, and managed to take some screenshots of all the changes in the process. Those include previews, improved push notifications, and performance improvements.

First, previews for image and photos will be shown within tweets from selected “partner websites” as you scroll through your updates, similar to Tweetbot. Push notifications have also been improved, with the option of receiving them when specific people tweet. In addition, there are new “unobtrusive” notifications when you’re still using the app, again mimicking Tweetbot functionality.

Twitter will also be tweaking discovery and Connect functionality. The Discover tab will alert users to new content, while Connect will add new autocomplete features. Tweets based around selected events will be highlighted, with Twitter determining which tweets and images will make the grade. There are also some smaller tweaks, such as being able to tap a user’s avatar to go to their profile, and the icon for the app has been updated to reflect the new Twitter logo.

There’s no word on when the update will hit the App Store, but a similar leak involving Instagram saw a ten day gap between the release notes sighting and update launch. Keep an eye out for it in the meantime, and see the full unedited changelog from the App Store below.

Tea for Tweet: This Vending Machine Gives You Free Iced Tea for a Tweet

For the past few months, a lot of advertising and marketing campaigns have been targeting vending machines. There’s Coca-Cola’s vending machine that gave away free soda for a hug, and the Rugbeer vending machinethat needed to be tackled before it dispensed any beer. And then there’s the Bevmax 4-45, commonly known as ‘Bev’, that dispenses free ice tea in exchange for a tweet.

tea tweet
It’s as smart as vending machines get. It’s located at Wembley Square in Cape Town and encourages people to send out GPS-tagged tweets that include a specific hashtag so they can claim some free refreshments.

Once Bev notices the tweet, it’ll mechanically work to serve you up a can of tea for your enjoyment.

South African soda company BOS Ice Tea worked together with social media agency RAAK to come up with Bev. Pretty ingenious, isn’t it? And it’s great for generating publicity, too.

Twitter introduces Simple Search

Representatives from the Twitter empire have today spoken of a new era of search within the home website of the 140 character titan. This upgrade within the site’s codes will allow for “Simpler Search” as they put it, it including both search autocomplete and ‘People you follow’ search results. This update will require no additional effort from you, the user, with all of the newness coming from Twitter’s own developers on their side of the web.

Search autocomplete will appear to you in the main search bar at the top of Twitter – the same place the twitter search bar has been for some time. What you’ll see with this update is a list of results that pop up under the search bar whenever you type in several characters. You’ll be able to select from these results or disregard them altogether if you’d like.

Also included in those results that pop up downward is a set of the people that you follow on Twitter as their name results to the word you’re typing. After your search is entered, you’ll see a list of results that come from an improved search engine inside Twitter that will push the following, per Twitter:

• Spelling corrections: If you misspell a term, we’ll automatically show results for your intended query.

• Related suggestions: If you search for a topic for which people use multiple terms, we will provide relevant suggestions for terms where the majority of that conversation is happening on Twitter.

• Results with real names and usernames: When you search for a name like ‘Jeremy Lin,’ you’ll see results mentioning that person’s real name and their Twitter account username.

• Results from people you follow: In addition to seeing ‘All’ or ‘Top’ Tweets for your search, you can also now see Tweets about a given topic from only the people you follow when you select the ‘People you follow’ view. Viewing Tweets about a topic from just the people you follow is a great way to find useful information and join the conversation.

Results for your searches should be more relevant and accessing your friends’ twitter accounts should be more of a snap than a click festival. Have a peek at our timeline below to keep up to date on all things Twitter as well – do it now!

ALSO NOTE: These changes won’t be immediate, but you will see them soon!
