GPS bracelet uses social media to protect Civil Rights Activists

The Civil Rights Defenders have issued their first batch of GPS bracelets that will alert the CRDs’ headquarters, other nearby activists, and the entirety of the CRDs’ social media following if the bracelet’s owner is ever kidnapped. The first 5 bracelets were issued from April 2nd through April 5th during the Civil Rights Defenders’ conference, Defenders’ Days. The CRD plans on issuing 55 of these bracelets over the next year and a half.

GPS Bracelet updates your social networks if you're ever kidnapped

The bracelets are described as a personal alarm, and the product is called the “Natalia Project”. It was named after Natalia Estemirova, a human rights defender who, in 2009, was murdered within 24 hours of being kidnapped. The CRD believed that if the authorities were alerted sooner of Natalia’s kidnapping, the tragedy could have been prevented. Robert Hårdh, the Executive Director of Civil Rights Defenders, stated that these bracelets “gives us an opportunity to react faster and extend our hands-on protection further.”

The GPS bracelet can be activated manually, or if an attacker forcefully removes it from the activist’s wrist. A signal with the activist’s GPS location will be sent to the CRD headquarters in Stockholm. Alerts will also be sent out to other CRD activists within the vicinity, and an automatic notification will be sent out throughout the Natalia Project’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The Civil Rights Defenders state that these bracelets could potentially alert hundreds of thousands of people instantly. It would also put pressure on the attacker, because having the entire world become aware of the attack “creates virtual protection around civil rights defenders at risk.” Unfortunately, the CRD requires additional money to get these bracelets to more activists. Its asking anyone who can help to support the Natalia Project with any donation amount they can afford. You can find out more about the Natalia Project here.

Bloomberg terminals now pull in real-time Twitter feeds

Bloomberg terminals now pull in realtime Twitter feeds

Now that the SEC has given companies its blessing to share business data over social media, Bloomberg has begun to pull live Twitter feeds into its market terminals, known as the Bloomberg Professional service. According to the firm, that makes it the first financial information platform to integrate real-time tweets into investment workflows. Within the service, tweets are classified by company, asset class, people and topics, and stock buffs can even search messages, create filters and set alerts to notify them when a certain subject gets a flurry of mentions. The outfit hopes the inclusion of 140-character missives will let financial-minded folks keep their fingers on the market’s pulse without switching to another system (read: being distracted by Tweetdeck) to get the big picture. Hit the jump for the full skinny in the press release.

Twitter Assisted In Missing Mum Search

Twitter Assisted In Missing Mum SearchSome of us might tweet about mundane stuff in life, but it seems that there is a whole lot more to Twitter than meets the eye, especially after you read about this story of a Belfast woman who managed to track down her missing mum after 11 hours. Diane, as seen on Twitter with one of her four legged besties, was tweeted by her daughter, Joanne, who claimed that Twitter managed to help her locate her mother, which is no mean task considering how Diane suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease, which has been deemed by some to be the Long Goodbye.

Diane went out for a walk, but could not remember how to get back, and so she felt helpless since she failed to be in a place where there is a decent phone signal. With no one else to turn to except for the Twitter brigade, she posted an appeal on Twitter as well as Facebook, while asking her followers to retweet and share the picture message. Diane’s tweet read, “This is my mum & she’s gone #missing. Help try & bring her home safe #missing #belfast #plsRT #alzheimers”. Now that’s the power of social networking for you.

Bloomberg To Integrate Twitter Feeds

Bloomberg To Integrate Twitter FeedsTwitter recently introduced some changes to their micro blogging site, in the form of Twitter Cards, and here we are with another update on what else Twitter has been up to. Apparently, Bloomberg has just announced that they will be integrating Twitter feeds into its terminals. These are no ordinary terminals, as they deliver real-time, financial data to the desks of Wall Street traders. This announcement was in line with the SEC’s decision which was made earlier this week, touting that social media has finally made the jump to being a valid platform for corporate disclosures, although it goes without saying that both companies should have begun integration work a whole lot earlier before the official announcement.

This move would see Twitter grow up by another notch, where it underlines the growing importance of Twitter to function as a distribution platform when it comes to breaking, market-moving news. Jean-Paul Zammitt, head of sales and product development for Bloomberg Professional, explained in a statement, “When important news is shared on Twitter, traders and investors need to be able to access it, and validate its importance in order to incorporate that information into their decision-making process.” Tweetdeck definitely looks as though they are going to “suffer” from this latest Bloomberg integration.

Mentions Added To LinkedIn For Striking Up Conversations

Mentions Added To LinkedIn For Striking Up Conversations

The mentions feature has been made popular by Twitter. It has become one of the most widely used ways for striking up conversations online. LinkedIn, a network focused towards professionals, brings mentions for its users in a bid to make it easier for them to start conversations. Dubbing it a new way for users to engage with their network, LinkedIn says that mentions make it easier for users to share knowledge with each other and ultimately become better at what they do. They now have the ability to mention their connections and companies in conversations on the network.

It is pretty straight forward to use mentions on LinkedIn. Simply type the name of a company or connection that you want to mention in your status or in a comment on the Homepage, select the relevant connection from the list that drops down and proceed to share. Those who have been mentioned in the update will receive a notification about the mention. It is also possible to mention other LinkedIn members that are in conversation in the comments section of posts on the LinkedIn Homepage. Users will be able to respond in real-time when someone begins a conversation with them. Today LinkedIn starts rolling out mentions for English speaking members, promising that it will be rolled out to users all across the globe soon.

Anonymous Hacks North Korean Social Networks As Part Of Operation Free Korea
We’re not sure if you’ve been keeping tabs on world news lately outside of reading about the latest Internet trends, but there’s some serious stuff going on in North Korea these days. Nearly everyone is watching to see what Kim Jong-un will do, while also preparing for the worst-case scenario at the same time. But infamous hacker group Anonymous has taken the initiative to launch a cyber attack at North Korea’s social network accounts.

Not only has Anonymous claim to be responsible for the hacking of North Korea’s Twitter and Flickr account, they’ve also forced North Korean news agency Uriminzokkiri to go offline and claim they have accessed 15,000 usernames and passwords from a university database. Anonymous has used the hacked accounts to relay their “Operation Free Korea” message to call for Kim Jong-un’s resignation as the leader of North Korea to be replaced with a democratic government, as well as to give the people of North Korea uncensored Internet access.

Twitter releases updates for Android, iPhone, and mobile web

Twitter is starting to roll out updates to both its Android and iPhone apps, as well as its mobile web interface. Its most major update is coming to Android devices running 4.0 or higher. Its Android app has been revamped to a degree in which Twitter says “reflects a native Android experience”. All of the updates will include more types of contents, including apps, photo galleries, and improved product listings.

Twitter releases updates for iPhone, Android, and mobile web

In the Android update, there are now wider and taller timelines that fully utilize’s your device’s screen. There is a flat navigation bar, and you can tap and hold various parts of the app for quick actions. There are swipe gestures that let you navigate between tabs, and when you type, whether it’d be for a tweet or for searching, you will now be shown relevant usernames and hashtag suggestions.

One of the most major updates coming is the inclusion of new Twitter cards. Now developers are able to deeply-link their apps into their tweets. Their tweets will now display information of their app, including its icon, name, pricing, and more inside of the same tweet. Users will be able to view links directly from the app it was shared from, and if they don’t yet have the app, they are redirected to download the app.

Users who tweet a URL linking to a web page with more than one featured image will now have a picture gallery preview shown in their tweet. Advertisers who lists products in their tweets will also be given an option to add two customizable features to their product, including things like pricing or rating. All of these features will be rolling out within the next few days, and will bring benefits to both users and developers.

Twitter revamp brings native experience to Android, expanded Card content

Twitter revamp brings native experience to Android, expanded Card content

We already knew Twitter was planning on expanding its Card content to include app, gallery and product info. But the company apparently had another sweeping change waiting in the wings: a UI refresh for Android version 4.0 and up. The update, which is currently rolling out to users, aims to bring the 140 characters or less experience more in line with native Android design (hello! Holo). To that end, the new layout enlarges the size of tweets displayed in the timeline, incorporates long-presses for “quick actions,” and adds an ability to swipe left or right to parse through navigation tabs. As for that new Card integration, it’s live now, so users on Android, iOS and Twitter’s mobile site should be seeing those tweaks soon.
