Canonical Reveals Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop

Canonical Reveals Ubuntu 14.04 DesktopTime certainly flies, don’t you think so? It has been half a dozen months already since the Saucy Salamander install rolled out. This time around, the folks over at Canonical is pushing out the most recent version of its popular Linux distro, calling it Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Of course, like any other good Linux distro, it would need to be accompanied by a code name, and so we have it known as Trusty Tahr.

This will be part of its long term support series, and that translates to it being on the receiving end of support and security updates for up to five years instead of the standard nine months. For companies that use either on desktop machines and servers, this is definitely good news. Why is Trusty such a big deal for Canonical? Well, it basically allows the operating system to be ready to see action on touchscreen displays, high DPI screens and tablets. Up till now, Ubuntu has not properly scaled high resolution displays. Apart from that, Ubuntu 14.04 would mark the first stable version of Ubuntu for tablets, now how about that? Are you stoked yet? Those who are interested are able to download Ubuntu 14.04 for free, of course. [Press Release]

Tesla Model S Owners Hack Own Cars, Discover Ubuntu

Tesla Model S Owners Hack Own Cars, Discover UbuntuThere aren’t that many Tesla Model S owners around, but those who are do seem to comprise of people who have a different way of seeing things. Apparently, some Tesla Model S owners have already tried to hack their ride by wiring into the Model S’ communications system. A forum user who goes by the moniker of “nlc” managed to locate a number of ports and tap into the data which flows straight to the center console and navigation screens. It seems that these “hackers” found out that the sub-system actually ran on a version of the Ubuntu operating system, which so happens to be a variant of Linux.

Heck, there was even someone who managed to circumvent this discovery in order to have Firefox up and running on the center console touchscreen, although it does not seem as though there are other more invasive efforts to be made via the Ethernet entry point.

Tesla is not too happy to hear about this news, where via its service center, it has already informed the original Ethernet exploiter that Tesla knows what has gone on, and that such activity would lead to the warranty being void. After all, the Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement (MVPA) comes with a clause which reads, in part, “You may not, or may not attempt to, reverse engineer, disassemble, decompile, tamper with or engage in any similar activity in respect of a Tesla Vehicle, nor may you permit any third party to do so, save only to the extent permitted by applicable law.”

Well, the Meizu MX3 holds the distinction of being one of the first smartphones that will ship with Ubuntu Linux, although one can always make do with an Android-powered version of this smartphone. The Ubuntu version of the Meizu MX3 was shown off at Mobile World Congress in February.

Ubuntu Phones Will Hit The Market This Fall

Meizu And BQ To Roll Out Ubuntu Smartphones

Meizu And BQ To Roll Out Ubuntu SmartphonesIt does seem as though the first of Ubuntu-powered smartphones will be introduced sometime later this year, where the manufacturer would be European designer BQ as well as Chinese phone manufacturer Meizu, where the latter has had some pretty interesting releases in the past. According to Canonical and Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth, extra details will be revealed at the upcoming Mobile World Congress that is happening in Barcelona, Spain, later this month, although there were hints that Meizu’s handset will be more or less the already released Meizu MX3, albeit it will ditch the Android platform and run on Ubuntu instead.

CyberNotes: Share a Firefox Profile Between Ubuntu and Windows

This article was written on October 24, 2007 by CyberNet.

    Web Browser Wednesday

One of the new things in Ubuntu 7.10 is the ability to read and write to NTFS formatted drives, which is great for Windows XP and Vista users. What that means is that you can create a Firefox profile in Windows and set it up so that Ubuntu uses the exact same profile.

Why would that be nice to have? Any bookmarks, extensions, and options you configure in Windows will be used in Ubuntu as well. You won’t have to spend extra time trying to setup a Firefox profile just for Ubuntu, which for me makes this trick a must!

Here’s what you have to do:

    1. Call up the terminal in Ubuntu, and type firefox -profilemanager at the prompt:
      Firefox Ubuntu Profile 1
    2. You should be presented with the Firefox Profile Manager which we’ll use to create a new profile. After you press the Create Profile button you’ll need to click Next on the following screen.
      Firefox Ubuntu Profile 2
    3. Here you’ll want to type in the name of the new profile, and once you’ve done that click the Choose Folder button:
      Firefox Ubuntu Profile 3
    4. This is where you need to hunt down the location of your Firefox profile on your Windows partition, which in my case was labeled by default in Ubuntu as “sda2″. The profiles are located at Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows XP/2000 or users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows Vista. After you select your Firefox profile folder click the Open button.

    5. Now you can finish up the profile creation process. When you’re taken back to the Profile Manager, select the new profile that you just made, and start Firefox. If you check the Don’t ask at startup option, Firefox will always use that profile as the default one.

See, I told you it was simple! The same type of thing can be done with Mozilla Thunderbird, but I thought Firefox was a good place to start. Enjoy having all of the same extensions, bookmarks, and settings in your Windows and Ubuntu versions of Firefox! 😉
