Samsung’s 85-inch Ultra HD TV up for pre-order in Korea, priced at just $38k

Samsung's 85inch Ultra HD TV up for preorder in Korea, priced at just $38k

At CES last week Samsung set a new benchmark in size with its 85-inch S9 that edged past the Ultra HD competition by one inch, and now it’s setting a new high mark for price as well, at least in Korea. While we still don’t have any US pricing or release details, the first 77 models encased in that “Timeless Gallery” frame are going up for pre-order, priced at 40,000,000 won ($37,877 US). Other than the obligatory 214cm of 4K goodness, it has built-in 2.2 channels speakers, quad-core CPU and Precision Black Pro LCD panel. We’ve heard that sales of Sony and LG’s models have been surprisingly brisk despite their high prices so you may want to run, not walk to your local Korean high-end electronics retailer to get one first. Of course, if you wait, you can always snag the 95- or 110-inch model that are promised to ship later this year, albeit at similar prices. While you’re deciding, check out our hands-on pictures and video to get an idea of what awaits.

Why 4K Phones Aren’t Such a Bad Idea

Sony announces 65-and 55-inch Ultra HD TVs at CES: arriving this spring, pricing a mystery

Sony announces a 65 and 55inch 4K TV at CES

We wouldn’t blame you if you cried tears of agony when you realized that you could afford neither the $25,000 nor the space in your home to accommodate Sony’s 84-inch 4K Ultra HD TV. Fortunately for you, the company is announcing 65 and 55-inch versions that’ll occupy less room in your home while still pumping out 4K images. Both offer a Triluminous display with the company’s X-Reality PRO and Motionflow XR960 technology, WiFi and NFC one-touch screen mirroring. At the same time, the company’s launching a range of “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray discs, but sadly the constraints of the format mean the discs will only output footage at 1080p (but then it’ll be upscaled back to 4K). The pair will arrive in the spring, but the company doesn’t want to talk pricing beyond intimating that you won’t need to calculate the fee in the number of sedan cars you could buy instead.

Sharp Unveils 60-inch Ultra-HDTV

Sharp has just unveiled its best and most expensive television. Dubbed as the ICC Purios, the 6-inch Ultra HD television is expected to hit the Japanese market on the 20th of February next year. Sony says that its 4K TV will cost Y2,625,000 or around $31,283, and that it will be sold on a made-to-order basis. Sony has yet to decide whether or not it will sell the 4K TV overseas. Commenting about its price, a Sony spokesperson said: “There may be other 4K TVs on the market, but our 4K TV offers images that are so realistic that viewers feel as if they were experiencing the scene in real life.” And similar to other 4K TVs, the ICC (Integrated Cognitive Creation) Purios will have a 3,840 × 2,160 screen resolution. The Consumer Electronics Association announced in October that it had altered the term of the technology “4K” to “UHD” or Ultra High Definition. At next year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Sharp will go head to head with Sony and Samsung in a battle of UHDs.

REDRAY 4K Cinema Player Puts Theater Quality Images in Your Media Room

While there are already a handful of displays on the market with 4K pixel resolution, they’re extremely expensive, and there’s very little content available for them. Now, RED Digital Cinema has announced a new video player capable of outputting 4K video without breaking the bank too badly.

redray 4k player 1

The REDRAY player can play native 4K (4096×2160) resolution video files. It can output these to either a single 4K display through an HDMI 1.4 connector, or to a grid of four monitors using four HDMI 1.3 connectors. It’s also capable of playback of 3D content, as well as high frame rate content at 48 or 60fps (like the new Hobbit movie.)

While the player is clearly designed primarily for commercial installations, you can certainly use it in your home theater if you’ve got a way to get 4K source material – like if you shoot some with a RED camera, and prep the files using REDCINE-X PRO.

You can also use the player to upscale standard H.264 HD content to 4K resolution as well. Inside, it’s got a 1TB SATA hard drive for storing up to 100 hours of 4k content, and can receive content via Internet download, SD card or USB flash media. Its audio capabilties aren’t too shabby either, and it supports up to 7.1 channel LPCM sources in 24-bit, 48Khz quality. It also offers wireless remote control via IR or 802.11n.

You can pre-order the REDRAY over at the RED store now for $1450(USD). RED expect to start shipping them in Q1 2013.
