Emblaze Mobile’s First Else may be no more, but its legacy lives on. During MWC we caught up with the company’s ex-CEO, Amir Kupervas, who started a company called UIU in June 2011 — only a month after his departure and almost a year after the tantalizing First Else got canned. Over at UIU, Kupervas and UX strategist Itay Levin (who also took part in the First Else project) have a more humble ambition: to offer an Android launcher and an accompanying cloud management platform that are simple enough for non-techie users. “In the US, smartphones generate twice as much the amount of calls to the customer centers than the featurephones,” said Kupervas. “There’s a lot of hustle and a lot of confusion on how to work these guys. People are struggling with them, even existing users.”

We’ve heard some hardware numbers, but now we’re hearing more how the PlayStation 4 will actually work in practice. Alongside connections to other Sony hardware, the highlight that caught our attention was that you’ll be able to leap back into your game by pressing the power button. From off. Better still, there’s also a secondary custom chip for uploads and download and with that, the PS4 will let you play your new titles as you download them. The rest of the game will continue to be piped into that ample hard drive. You can also share (with that new button) 10 seconds of video, trimming and uploading your own gaming highlights to your buddies — heck, you can even stream it, with allies ‘tagging’ in and taking over the controller.

In fact Sony will make social networks far more integrated, with “real people”, photos and companion mobile apps to augment this. In fact you’ll be able to browse video remotely from the likes of your smartphone, tablet or Vita. The system itself will also learn your preferences and download content it reckons you’ll like. Personalization is shaping up to be a big focus for Sony.

Page and Co. have just unveiled a new look for Google Images that places a premium on metadata visibility, speed and slick looks. After gathering feedback from both users and webmasters, Google redesigned its image search to feature relevant information right next to images and speed load times by no longer loading source pages behind selected graphics. Mountain View also designed the new layout with keyboard surfing in mind, to boot. The new UI isn’t available across the board quite yet, but the search titan says folks will start to see the refreshed UI in the next few days.

As we should all understand by now, YouTube is constantly changing its look. The latest versions of Google’s video streaming juggernaut to be refreshed are its experiences for tablets. The Android app has a brand new UI for 10-inch slates, and if you prefer the mobile website to its apps, you’ll see the fresh look popping up there as well. Just like the changes to its site layout pushed to all a few days ago it brings the guide feature, promising easy access to subscribed channels. As YouTube continues to pick up higher profile content to show subscribers, it’s no surprise the new changes are intended to funnel viewers there. As promised, Jolla has shown off its newly launched Sailfish OS today, and said that UI will be all about speed and multitasking, while also cutting down on the finger dancing required to use it. The experience will start from the homescreen, where users will be able to control music playback or end a call using a “pulley” menu system without needing to open the respective apps. The Finnish startup also said that “many” Android apps would run on Sailfish handsets without modification, though a simple port would be required for best operation. Jolla foresees the software running not only smartphones from hardware players like new partner ST-Ericsson, but also tablets, smart TVs and in-car systems, for instance.
