Three UK now selling Samsung Galaxy Mega on its site, retail stores to offer it July 2nd

Call the United Kingdom home? Have a thing for overly large, unorthodox smartphones? Well then, today’s a good day to be a Three customer — or plan on being one soon. The carrier has announced that the Samsung Galaxy Mega will be up for grabs on its website starting today, while brick-and-mortar stores are expected to have it on shelves as soon as tomorrow. The enormous 6.3-inch handset is being offered in conjunction with a variety of monthly tariffs, and there’s also an option that takes advantage of Three’s new pay-as-you-go scheme. Better yet, the company says the Galaxy Mega is future-proof, as it’ll be able to support its upcoming LTE network once it goes live. Just remember, though… Three UK is in absolutely no rush to flip that switch.

Vodafone launches a 4G mobile hotspot, suffers from premature dispensation

Vodafone launches a 4G mobile hotspot, suffers from premature dispensation

Camping outside a store for weeks on end has been done to death now, so what can you do to score some early adopter cred? How about buying a device to use on a service that doesn’t exist… yet? That’s Vodafone’s thinking behind launching its first 4G wireless hotspot, two months before its LTE service begins rolling out. The Vodafone R212 will connect up to 10 devices simultaneously, comes with a 32GB SD card reader, a 2,800mAh battery and will, thankfully, connect to the company’s 3G network as well. It’ll set you back £39 up-front if you sign up for a plan offering you 1GB of monthly data for £10 a month.

Three UK simplifies pay-as-you-go tariff, offers data at 1p per MB

Image

Three UK is tired of networks offering pay-as-you-go packages with numerous caveats and bolt-ons, and so has decided to go back to basics. The network is now offering a single tariff for all of its fair-weather mobile users, pricing calls at 3p per minute, texts at 2p per minute and data at 1p per MB. Three UK has also promised that your credit won’t expire as long as you do something on the account once every six months. The change takes place from today, and existing customers will also be switched over to the new system — just in time for that trip across the North Sea.

Kate Moss to design mobile accessory range: ‘My phone’s as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes’

Kate Moss launches mobile accessory range, says her phone is 'as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes'

British model, high-street fashion dabbler and, er, Glastonbury attendee Kate Moss is working on an exclusive collection of phone accessories for UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. Quoted in a press release that doesn’t describe or feature any products from the range, she says she’ll be treating the partnership “like any other fashion collaboration,” and was apparently heavily involved in the design process. Although there’s no word on what the accessories will be, we’d assume an iPhone case of some sort is a given. Carphone Warehouse promises a full range of products when the line launches later this summer, and we’re looking forward to comparing the fruits of the partnership against the high-end phone peripherals that are already being peddling to well-heeled UK phone owners.

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Lounging around in the sun is great and all, but what to do on a rainy day? One option is to get some TV time in, and Sky’s got a few updates to share that might tempt you in front of a screen on dreary afternoons. At some point this summer, shows from Fox, Universal and SyFy will be available on Sky’s On Demand service, as well as content from Disney if you’re signed up for the Entertainment Extra package. Mobile apps will be getting a makeover, with “enhanced navigation” and a new design including bigger thumbnails when cruising through the VOD library. The Sky Go Xbox 360 app will also be updated to bring it in line with Microsoft’s UI style. Furthermore, Sky Multiroom subscribers will get access to Sky Go Extra, which allows you to download content in addition to streaming, at no extra cost in early July. Vitamin D’s overrated anyways.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini gets July 1st release date at Phones 4U, costs more than a GS3

Samsung’s dinkier S4 variant will be available to buy in the UK, starting next week. Phones 4U promises that it’ll be posting its Galaxy S4 Mini preorders on Monday July 1st, while smaller phone sellers like Unlocked Mobiles and Handtec are promising to start sales this weekend. Launching priced at £420 in Phones 4U, it’s arriving at a higher cost than last year’s Galaxy S III, currently £400 on the same site, making the S4 Mini (barring those looking for an incrementally smaller phone) appear a very tough sell to customers. While borrowing some design cues from the Galaxy S 4, the Mini drops down to a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and a pretty underwhelming 4.3-inch qHD AMOLED display, both less than you’d get on the GSIII. Of course, the price could drop substantially after release and EE is already offering S4 Mini preorder customers a free Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 to sweeten the deal.
