For once, we were offered some nicely specific pricing for ASUS’ incoming MeMo Pad HD 7 (namely $129 for the 8GB model and $149 for the 16GB option), but were left wanting on any sort of release date. Fortunately, ASUS’ UK branch has told us to expect the colorful Nexus 7 doppelgänger this August. As mentioned during the company’s Computex reveal, the smaller, cheaper iteration is geared towards developing markets and it looks like ASUS is sticking with that — only the 16GB model will go on sale in the British Isles, priced at £149.

YouView, the relatively young set-top TV service has managed to establish itself in 400,000 houses, the company revealed today. Its CEO, Richard Halton added that 2.2 million video streams are now being consumed every week. To celebrate all this viewing, it’s going to be launching an Android app in the coming weeks, which will remotely control the TV and recordings, essentially catching up to the iOS version already out there. The app will be optimized for several Google-powered handsets, including the Galaxy S2, S3, Ace, Nexus 4 and (perhaps oddly) the HTC One S. However, according to Pocket-Lint, the incoming app will still work on handsets running Android 2.3, just, well, unoptimized.

Better still, YouView promises to launch multiple new internet channels (through providers BT and TalkTalk), adding to the 70 broadcast channels available on the box at the moment. It’ll likely be ready in time for BT’s own sports channel, although YouView mentioned a loosely-defined summer launch. YouView promises that its new internet channels will include the ability to rewind and search for content, behaving almost identically to typical channels. There’s no specified channel list just yet, but we’re sure TalkTalk and BT will be filling us in on all the details ahead of any launch.

Yearning to watch Norsemen amass loot while raiding foreign lands? If you’re in the UK, you can now watch US cable show The Vikings exclusively via Lovefilm Instant. The Amazon-owned service has made all nine episodes of the historical drama — shown in the US and in Canada on History Channel — available for streaming. The service’s subscribers in Germany won’t be left out, but as the show isn’t slated to go live for them until June 15th, they have a bit of waiting to do. This new addition to Lovefilm’s roster is a clear effort by the service to bolster its TV show offerings, seeing as it’s struggling to catch up to Netflix UK in that area. Lovefilm also inked a deal with Warner Bros in April to air popular TV titles One Tree Hill, The West Wing and Nip Tuck, although Netflix will have its own exclusive when Arrested Development season four launches tomorrow.

After a series of rumors about the HTC First not selling too well in the States, we’ve now heard that the customized Facebook / Android handset won’t be coming to the UK. Mobile News initially reported that UK pre-orders will be cancelled and we’ve just confirmed this with our own sources, who said that it was Facebook itself who made the decision, rather than HTC or either of the European carrier partners (EE and Orange). We’ve reached out to HTC and EE for confirmation and will update if we get a response.

Update: We’ve just heard back from EE, who confirmed the rumor and attributed Facebook’s decision to “customer feedback” that resulted in a need to improve the Facebook Home interface before spreading it to further markets:

“Following customer feedback, Facebook has decided to focus on adding new customization features to Facebook Home over the coming months. While they are working to make a better Facebook Home experience, they have recommended holding off launching the HTC First in the UK, and so we will shortly be contacting those who registered their interest with us to let them know of this decision. Rest assured, we remain committed to bringing our customers the latest mobile experiences, and we will continue to build on our strong relationship with Facebook so as to offer customers new opportunities in the future.”

Microsoft has a good excuse for the Surface Pro‘s late arrival in the UK: the company claims that demand in the US stripped its cupboards bare, leaving nothing but RT crumbs to sell on this side of the Atlantic. In any case, Redmond tells us that a date has now been set, with the Core i5-powered tablet due to be available from Microsoft’s online store from May 23rd. For once, Brits can look forward to dollar-equivalent pricing, with the 64GB version going for £719 and the 128GB model fetching £799 inclusive of VAT. (That may not be cheap, but at least it’s fair.) Meanwhile, the bendy Touch Cover will continue to cost £99, and the more traditional key action of the Type Cover will add another tenner on top of that. So, there it is. Just in time for Haswell to make us wonder when a more power-efficient sequel might be coming out.
