In case you haven’t heard, Amazon happily took the wraps off of its new Kindle Fire lineup during today’s earlier event in Santa Monica, California. And, for those living in the UK, you, too, can have the online retail giant take your money for one of these slates pretty soon — well, at least for a couple of the fresh models. As far as pricing goes, the entry-level Kindle Fire will cost a mere £129 (around $205), while the 7-inch Fire HD takes on the slightly heftier price of £159 and £199 for the 16 and 32GB, respectively. Obviously, this leaves out that 8.9-incher Fire HD, though it looks like Amazon’s only bringing the smaller Fires to the United Kingdom, as there’s no mention of the company’s larger tablet anywhere on the site. Still, folks looking to pre-order can do so now at the source link below, but better hurry, since Amazon does note they’re all being fulfilled on a “first come, first served” basis.

It’s a sign of the times that as our smartphones do more, the less we use them for their intended purpose, you know, as a phone. Vodafone’s seizing upon the trend by offering you unlimited calls and texts, but keeps a firm hand on the hose marked “data allocation.” Vodafone Red will set you back £29 a month, offering you 1GB of mobile internet on the network, while £34 gets you Vodafone Red Data, doubling your allowance to 2GB. The plans go live in-store and online from tomorrow, and are available to pair with any handset that the company current sells — and, we’d hope, any that arrive in the near future.

If you’re a fan of BBC programs like Doctor Who, Top Gear, and more and enjoy the iPlayer app, check this out. The app for iOS has got a lot more useful with the ability to download your favorite BBC TV shows directly to the smartphone or your tablet. That will let you watch your favorite programs even when a Wi-Fi network isn’t available.

The app has a couple caveats though. The app only allows you to keep shows you download and don’t start to watch for 30 days. Once you begin to watch the show, you have only seven days to finish. It’s unclear if you can download the same episodes again later if you want to watch second time. The other big caveat is that iPlayer still isn’t available in the US as of yet, though a global player may someday make its way stateside.

iPlayer now has a download icon on each program that you can tap to start the download and save the episode. If you’re not on a Wi-Fi network when you hit the download button, the next time you connect to a Wi-Fi network, the download will begin. This should be the perfect way to have shows with you when you’re traveling. Android users in the UK should also be getting the download capability soon.

We’ve barely heard from Orange’s Quick Tap payments system in over a year, but now the UK phone network has decided to dump the underwhelming Tocco Lite and add its mobile payments service to the NFC-capable Galaxy S III. Tying into any British MasterCard, Visa, Debit or credit card, you’ll be able to pay up to £20 from your account without the need for PIN entry. New users on Orange SIM-toting Galaxy S IIIs will also pick up a 50 quid bonus when they activate the feature, which kicks off this Wednesday. Check the press release below for all the details.

Media provider 7digital has mostly been making news on the Windows front recently, making its music offerings available for Windows Phone earlier this year and serving up 20 million tracks through its preview version for Windows 8. Now the digital media company is branching out to Toshiba televisions as well, inking a deal to be the European music partner for the Toshiba Places platform. The agreement, which represents 7digital’s first foray into the connected TV market, will allow consumers with a Toshiba Places account to browse through the content provider’s music catalogue, create playlists and stream music directly through the television. The company says the feature should be compatible with televisions equipped with Toshiba Places since May 2011. Five countries — the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain — are slated to get first crack when the service goes live in Europe in September.
