PSA Nexus 7 arrives at the Carphone Warehouse today

If you’re the old fashioned sort who likes carrying your newly minted device back from the store, then you’ll be elated to know that the Nexus 7 is available at the Carphone Warehouse from today. The Jelly Bean-running slate that sits in the palm of your hand will set you back £199 if you’d like it without any obligation. However, if you’re also due a smartphone upgrade (or just want a new one), you can get it for free if you sign up to a data-sharing deal for £20.50 per month that’ll let the tablet leech your handset’s data for the following 24 months.

ARM forms UK group to foster an Internet of Things, put 50 billion devices online by 2020

ARM forms UK group to foster an Internet of Things, put 50 billion devices online by 2020

ARM isn’t content with dominating the mobile space. It’s been by the far the most vocal about an Internet of Things where everything is connected — and to make that happen, it just established an industry forum in the UK that it hopes will establish common ground for all those internet-linked light bulbs, refrigerators and thermostats. Home energy firm Alertme, cloud-aware sensing outfit AquaMW, lighting maker EnLight and white space wireless guru Neul will start meeting with ARM from August 24th onwards to hash out our automated, eco-friendly future. There’s a certain urgency in this for the chip designer: it expects 50 billion devices on the grid by 2020. With IDC estimating a billion new connected devices just in 2011, the clock on that connected device transition is ticking very loudly.

Apple wins stay on having to post ‘Samsung did not copy’ notice

Apple wins stay on having to post 'Samsung did not copy' notice

Apple’s pride can stay intact for at least a little while longer: the company successfully won a stay on a UK ruling that would have it post notices clearing Samsung’s name in the wake of the two tech giants’ patent dispute in the country. Apple now won’t have to face any kind of public flogging unless it loses an appeal on the non-infringement verdict, which is due to be heard in October. Not surprisingly, the iPad creator doesn’t want its own site to become a billboard promoting someone else’s work. The decision makes Samsung’s victory that much more bittersweet — along with losing that instant satisfaction from a humbled Apple, it still has to accept a verdict that claims the Galaxy Tab supposedly isn’t cool enough to have been an imitation.

Samsung: Galaxy S III’s universal search function ‘inadvertently removed’, will return to UK models in the next few days

After being unceremoniously stripped in a recent OTA update, Samsung has told TechRadar that the Galaxy S III’s universal search function will return — at least in the UK. A spokesperson for Samsung said that the “inadvertent removal” will be remedied in the “correct software upgrade” over the next few days. It sends a mixed message on why the feature was removed in the first place — and makes us wonder whether the search box will ever return to the Sprint iteration any time soon. Still, it’s good news for anyone that’s having trouble keeping tabs on all those Angry Birds iterations. Gotta finish ’em all.

Roku picks up financing from BSkyB, News Corp and more, keeps eye on the premium streaming crown

The little media streamer company that could, Roku, has gained some powerful friends in its latest round of financing, with $45 million in funds coming from the likes of BSkyB, News Corp and another partner who would prefer to remain nameless at this time, as well as previous investors Menlo Ventures and Globespan Capital Partners. While we leave you to ponder which company might be that unidentified source, Roku is simply continuing on, earmarking the money for use in building brand awareness, expanding internationally and much, much more. Also, that MHL-connected Roku Streaming Stick introduced at CES? It hasn’t gone away and is still on track for launch later this year, with an eye towards providing a “Roku Inside” bundled experience for otherwise dumb flat-panel HDTVs.

Roku’s alignment with BSkyB (which reported a $10m stake in its earnings this morning, as well as the option to distribute its own branded Roku hardware) makes sense after the pay-TV giant launched Now TV recently with the hockey puck as one of its supported platforms, while CEO Anthony Wood tells us the fruitful partnership with News Corp had its root in the Fox News, Wall Street Journal Live and X-Factor channels it launched last year. Wood cites plans to make Roku “the TV distribution platform of the future”, and this fifth round of financing — larger than all previous rounds combined — may help push it in this direction, check out a few more details in the press release after the break.

BMW i Flagship Store opened in London with full showroom

This week if you’re anywhere near the greater London area you’re going to want to head on down to BMW’s brand new Flagship i Store. This lovely viewing room of a store contains nothing less than the i3 city car and the i8 hybrid grand tourer as well. Though the i3 isn’t due to come out until next year and the i4 wont be available until 2014, BMW is using the massive opportunity that is the 2012 Summer Olympics to gain massive views on their next-level wares through the next few weeks at least.

It’s the BMW i3 that will likely get the most attention in the weeks ahead as it nears reality for the lucky few who will pick one up. This lovely beast has a near identical look to it when compared to the Frankfurt Motor Show showing of the vehicle on the outside while the innards have gone through some substantial changes indeed. BMW notes that all of the materials used in the cabin of the i3, eucalyptus to leather, come from sustainable outlets making this as “green” as they want to market it as.

Along with the i vehicle lineup BMW is bringing on some cool new smaller products to the in-store stage. One of these units is the Pedelec electric scooter that’s got power enough for 30 miles on one charge. Another product in the store is BMW’s own i Wallbox, made specifically for i range electric products. In addition to the store, BMW is planning a “Born Electric” tour of product showings starting in Rome, heading up and over to Japan, moving through the USA, and ending up in London in 2013.

Stay tuned for BMW’s electric wave as it sweeps over us all!

3G hotspots banned at London Olympics

The Olympic Games kick off in London in just a few days, and while O2 and Virgin have covered the high and low ground throughout London, the organization behind the games doesn’t want any pesky hotspots infiltrating the stadium. The Olympic Committee has a long list of exactly what is prohibited from being taken into Olympic venues, and now that includes “wireless access points” and “3G hubs.”

Users will be able to bring in their iPhone or Android smartphone and use the 3G connection as they normally would, but apparently enabling hotspot functionality is a no-no: “Personal / private wireless access points and 3G hubs (smart devices such as Android phones, iPhone and tablets are permitted inside venues, but must not be used as wireless points to connect multiple devices).”

There are several explanations we can think of for the ban. Interference is the first and foremost: mobile networks are already going to be packed to the brim thanks to the sheer number of people descending on one location, so adding a couple of hundred (thousand?) hotspots into the mix probably won’t help the limited spectrum availability.

Still, GigaOm believes there may be some funny business going on, as BT is the official hotspot provider for Olympic venues, charging £5.99 for 90 minutes or £9.99 for 24 hours worth of access. Draw your own conclusions. If you and your friends happen to be in the area and ride the information superhighway tgoether, make sure to use an inauspicious hotspot name. Something along the lines of “This is definitely not a hotspot” should do the trick.

O2 rolling out free WiFi across London

Getting online during the Olympics in London will probably be a chore thanks to the jammed mobile networks, but companies are doing their best to roll out free WiFi across the city. Recently, Virgin equipped multiple Tube stations with free WiFi access on platforms, and now O2 has announced that it will be rolling out free WiFi access outdoors in certain parts of the city.

Typically O2 offers WiFi access to those that subscribe to its service plans, but this latest WiFi scheme is open to anyone. Users simply need only sign up with an email address to receive free access that will be available in multiple parts of the city, including Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Regent Street, Exhibition Road, and High Street Kensington. There’s no word on if the company plans to do the same closer to the Olympic Stadium.

The service may be free for now, but O2 hasn’t indicated what will happen to the hotspots in the future. The company could pull them altogether, or begin charging for access, but we’d hope they remain active for the foreseeable future. Virgin, meanwhile, is currently offering free access on the Tube, but has dropped hints that users will be charged for access sometime later this year. Still, it’s faster than most people’s home broadband, so maybe it really is worth the price of admission.

Virgin Media coats millionth TiVo in Gold (Gold!), always believed in your soul

Virgin Media coats millionth TiVo in Gold Gold!, hires Martin Kemp to always believe in your soul

Companies might not be able to mention that big sporting event, but that doesn’t stop them from being clever. Virgin Media UK is one such enterprise, which decided to award its millionth TiVo customer with a gold medal in the form of a similarly-colored TiVo box. Rather than risk the ire of the IOC’s lawyers, the company used the moment to (perhaps sarcastically) celebrate the release of Spandau Ballet’s Gold. Bundling bassist-turned-soap-star Martin Kemp into a van, he turned up at the door of customers Allan and Christine Ward with the glistening PVR and a 3D-ready TV to surprise the couple. We don’t know if he told the husband and wife from Nottinghamshire that the HDTV market is like a high prison wall, but we hope the gift of a new home entertainment system leaves them standing so tallllllllllll…

ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity hits the UK on August 31st, priced at £600 for 64GB model

ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity hits the UK on August 31st, starts at £600 for 32GB model

While we’ve known the pricing and availability attached to ASUS’ new flagship slate in the US for some time now, UKers had been left to wonder when they’d finally be able to get their eager palms on that rebranded and well-specced Pad Infinity. Thankfully, that’s about to change, as the Taiwanese outfit just announced the Transformer TF700 will be up for grabs from Amazon in the UK starting August 31st, with the sticker value set at £600 for the rather spacious 64GB configuration and with the useful dock included. Naturally, that’s only a small part of the entire package, given how you’d also be getting a beautiful 1920 x 1200 display and the famed Tegra 3 chip to get you through the days. The only tedious bit is you’ll still have to wait a while to place your order; in the meantime, however, you could always give our review yet another read.
