Lenovo IdeaPad U310 Touch hands-on

Lenovo is announcing its fair share of brand new products at CES 2013, but its also giving some of its older products a refresh so they’ll act as better Windows 8 machines. One such line of products getting a refresh is the Lenovo U series. This is essentially the same exact thing as older IdeaPad U310 models, but there’s one key feature being added with this latest release: touch.

IMG_3417wtmk-w1024

Lenovo has outfitted the IdeaPad U310 with a touch panel for navigating through windows 8′s start screen. If you’ve read nearly any Windows 8 post penned by me, you’ll probably know that I think Windows 8 is perfect for touchscreens, so bringing touch functionality to the IdeaPad U310 is a great move for Lenovo.

We’re talking 10-point touch to be specific, which is a feature we’ve seen on a number of Lenovo’s Windows 8 machines lately. The addition of touch is pretty much the only difference though, with Lenovo offering up to an Intel Core i7 in the IdeaPad U310 Touch. You’ll also have NVIDIA GeForce graphics, so despite the fact that the IdeaPad U310 is an ultrabook, you might be able to get some reasonable graphics power out of the machine.

Indeed, the U310 is definitely an ultrabook, as it’s quite slim when it’s closed and it’s really light. If the smaller form factor of the U310 isn’t quite your cup of tea, Lenovo will also be offering the U410 with a 14-inch screen. The new U Touch series will be shipping out in Q1 2013, and Lenovo says that the U310 will start at $799.

NEC shows off a super-thin, 12.8mm thick Ultrabook, we go hands-on

NEC shows off a superthin, 128mm thick Ultrabook, we go handson

Just after wrapping up its CES 2013 press conference, Intel showed off two Ultrabooks: one that’s just a concept, and one that you can actually buy. What you see in that photo up there is the NEC LaVie X, the follow-up to last year’s NEC LaVie Z. It’s a 15-inch Ultrabook that measures just 12.8mm thick. We realize you might be desensitized to such specs at this point, so here’s a little context: that’s almost two millimeters thinner than the 15-inch Samsung Series 9, which already seemed impossibly skinny at 14.7mm. Other specs include a 1080p display and Haswell processor, though the machine we saw wasn’t powered on, so we could only play with the keyboard and see what it felt like to hold the laptop in one hand. Unless you’re reading this in Japan, you probably won’t ever have the chance to purchase it, but hopefully this isn’t the last time we see a 14-millimeter-thick laptop on this side of the Pacific.

Intel confirms partnership with Comcast, brings Xfinity TV viewing to Intel-based devices

Intel confirms partnership with Comcast, brings Xfinity TV viewing to Intelbased devices

Well, there’s no new set-top box box per se, but most of those rumored Intel / virtual cable TV details have come true here at CES. Intel just announced a new partnership with Comcast, which will enable Xfinity TV viewers to watch television on Intel-based devices in the home. According to Intel, the collaboration will enable users to tap into Xfinity TV on “IP set-top boxes, Ultrabooks, Intel-based all-in-one PCs, tablets and smartphones, as well as smart TVs in the home.” It’s like Tru2way, but slightly less restrictive. Evidently, the back-end magic is being handled by Intel’s Puma 6MG-bsaed XG5 multi-screen video gateway. In other words, this is Comcast opening up live TV streaming to more than just the HDTV connected to your set-top box, but unfortunately, there’s no mention at all about this working remotely. We’re also getting the impression that Intel’s pitching this kind of scenario to other pay-TV providers, and if we hear of any others hopping onboard, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Intel makes Touch, Wireless Display mandatory components for Haswell Ultrabooks

We’re here live at Intel’s CES press conference, where Kirk Skaugen has announced that companies who want to use the Ultrabook name and Haswell internals, it’ll have to include touch as standard. The other new condition that Santa Clara is imposing is that the device must carry Wireless Display as standard. On the upside, at least you’ll be able to see the images on your TV when your Ultrabook screen gets too greasy from your fingers.

The evolution of consumer electronics devices are definitely worth following, especially when you consider how the humble mobile phone moved from monochrome displays to color displays, and from MIDI ringtones to MP3 tunes. Well, the world of notebooks are not too different, coming with ever faster processors and better hardware specifications, while losing more in the weight department, too. The natural evolution of Intel-powered notebooks has seen the category of Ultrabooks rise (while the netbook market has more or less will experience its demise this year) to the top of the pile for folks who want adequate processing power on the go while looking uber cool. MSI’s latest offering, the MSI Slider S20 Ultrabook convertible, is here to tempt you to part with your hard-earned cash.

The MSI Slider S20 Ultrabook convertible will deliver a clever mix of portability and performance, boasting a slide-out keyboard that oozes with style, resembling one of the newer generation Sony Ultrabooks as well, running on the Windows 8 operating system and an Intel Core i5 processor. MSI’s S20 Ultrabook Convertible solves that problem by combining the best of both worlds, giving users the choice of using it as a tablet or as a laptop.”

Other hardware specifications that has been crammed into the MSI Slider S20 include a Jackson Peak Wireless adapter, Ethernet, a couple of USB 3.0 ports, Bluetooth connectivity, a mini HDMI-out connector and a built-in 720P HD webcam.
