What women want: Fujitsu’s Floral Kiss Ultrabook with pre-installed horoscope app
Posted in: Today's ChiliFujitsu has just revealed its Windows 8 lineup for the Japanese market, and top billing goes to the new “Floral Kiss” Ultrabook, which the manufacturer claims was built “under the direction” of its female employees in order to entice an equally female audience. At heart, it’s just a regular Core i5 notebook with a 500GB hard drive, but the womanliness is all in the presentation. There are subtle color schemes like “feminine pink” and “luxury brown” to choose from and every laptop comes with pre-installed Windows 8 apps including a digital scrapbook for collecting website bookmarks, a diary and a daily horoscope checker. This almost oppressively enticing bundle will hit stores on November 2nd, with some sort of premium designer version arriving a few weeks later. As for the exact price, that’ll be determined by retailers in Japan and by how good your husband is at haggling.

Earlier this morning, Samsung announced a slew of Windows 8 PCs and tablets, including the Series 5 Ultra Touch Ultrabook, a line of ATIV Smart PCs, and few Series Premium Ultrabooks. All of these devices will be released on October 26th — the day that Windows 8 is officially launching. And now, they’re available for pre-order.
Samsung’s ATIV lineup includes a set of two convertible tablet/laptops, the 500T and the 700T. The 500T runs on an Intel Atom Z2760 processor with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It costs $649.99 with the keyboard add-on costing an extra $100. The 700T is bit more powerful, running a Core i5 chip with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, costing $1,199.
Samsung’s also announced several Premium Ultrabooks ranging in different sizes and speeds. The company’s Series 9 Ultrabook will start at $1,300 for the 13-inch model, and the 15-inch model wil be just a $100 more. The Series 7 15-inch Ultrabook is priced at $1,100, while the Series 5 13-inch Ultra Touch will start at $810 for a Core i3 processor.
The Series 3 will be Samsung’s budget offering, which has a price range of $450 to $900 depending on the configuration. The company also announced two Series 7 all-in-one machines that will cost $1,100 for the 23-inch model and $1,700 for the 27-inch. Their lower-tier 21.5-inch Series 5 all-in-one will be priced at $800.

Last week, Samsung promised it would reveal a “groundbreaking” Windows 8 device, sending out invitations to a press event in which the company would announce Windows devices, including ultrabooks with touchscreens. This evening, the Korean company unveiled the products, including pricing, which are part of its new “Smart PC” category. The groundbreaking device? Meet the Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch Windows 8 ultrabook.
The base Series 5 Ultra Touch model starts at $809.99, and features a Core i3 processor (upgradable to an i5 for an extra $50), while both the i3 and i5 models have 4GB of RAM, a 1366×768 display, and a 500GB hard drive with 24 gigs of ExpressCache (high-speed SSD storage). It weighs in at 3.83 pounds, which is perhaps a tad hefty for an ultrabook. No word on battery life.
Other products included the rebranded Ativ Smart PC 500T ($749.99 with keyboard/$649.99 without keyboard) and 700T ($1,199.99), both of which are Windows 8 tablets. The 500T runs an Atom Z2760 processor, while the 700T runs a Core i5. The 500T features 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage space, while the 700T features 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space.
The laptops in the line include the Series 9 Premium Ultrabooks ($1,300 for the 13 inch model, $1,400 for the 15 inch model), the Series 7 15-inch notebook ($1,100), the Series 5 13.3-inch UltraTouch ($810 for the Core i3, $860 for the Core i5), and the Series 3 Notebook, which has a price range of $450 to $900 depending on configuration. Also announced were two All-in-One PCs, the Series 7 ($1,100 for the 23.6 inch model, $1,700 for the 27 inch model), and the 21.5 inch Series 5 at $800. Most of these devices will be available when Windows 8 is released on October 26th.

So Apple might have inadvertently kicked off the Ultrabook trend without knowing it by launching their MacBook Air which captured the imagination of millions for many years. Well, Intel responded with a list of hardware specifications that an Ultrabook needs to conform to, although there are some computer manufacturers who do skirt around that list with the bare minimum specifications, and they end up looking like regular notebooks instead of the now signature slim look found in majority of the Ultrabooks out there. Sony’s latest attempt will definitely not fall short of expectations, with the announcement of the Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook.
For starters, the Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook will merge innovative hardware designs with rich touch experiences that are powered by Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8 (which is still unreleased by the way). The highly versatile Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook is said to be able to transform just about instantly between a power-packed Ultrabook and a multi-media tablet with scratch-resistant glass. Hmmm, is it me, or are computer manufacturers starting to work on hybrid devices that offer flexibility in view of the work or play situation at hand?
The Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook will boast of a durable Surf Slider mechanism that will allow you to switch smoothly between keyboard and tablet, delivering a dual functioning computing experience. Tipping the scales at approximately 2.84 lbs. while boasting of an 11.6-inch display, the VAIO Duo 11 will also be accompanied by a pressure-sensitive digitizer stylus which delivers an expressive feel of natural handwriting directly on the touchscreen. You will be able to swap pen tips, depending on your current needs, for a firmer or softer writing feel. Sony claims that the digitizer stylus is ideal for writing, sketching and interacting with media and applications on the bright, detail-packed Full HD touchscreen.
Other hardware specifications include an LCD display and a backlit keyboard, the latest generation of Intel Core processors, full functional I/O port connectivity and Sony’s unique Sheet Battery technology. However, the color options are extremely limited – you will have to settle for black only, where prices start from $1,099.99 upwards depending on the hardware configuration.

We’ve heard a lot about Windows 8 today – Netflix pushed a Windows 8 update earlier today, we learned a little more about the Windows 8 marketing campaign, and – most importantly – the new OS officially went up for pre-order. With that mind, Best Buy has wasted no time putting Windows 8 PCs on display in some of its stores. WinSource reports that at least one Best Buy store is showing off a number of HP Windows 8 notebooks, ultrabooks, and all-in-one PCs to get customers excited about the release of the latest Windows installment.
Specifically speaking, a Best Buy location in St. Cloud, MN has the HP Pavilion 23, the ENVY TouchSmart, the ENVY 23 TouchSmart, and a pair of ENVY m6 laptops out on the show floor for customers to play around with. You obviously can’t take one of them home with you today, but this a good chance to see Windows 8 in action. This should be especially handy for those who didn’t want to bother with installing the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.
Windows 8 is scheduled to launch on October 26, and it looks ready to take the PC world by storm – or at least that’s the outcome Microsoft is hoping for. Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer recently said that he thinks Windows 8 could be as big as Windows 95 was for the company, and manufacturers are more than willing to show us their fancy new Windows 8 machines. Microsoft has pumped a lot of money into the marketing campaign for Windows 8, so you can bet that those manufacturers are counting on the new OS to move some machines once October 26 is on the books.
Thought WinSource’s report only covers one Best Buy store, there’s a good chance that other stores have already put Windows 8 devices out on the show floor. If your store hasn’t yet, it’s only a matter of time. In any case, if you’re interested in checking out Windows 8, it can’t hurt to stop by your local Best Buy to see if it has any computers running Windows 8 you can take a look at.

If 2012 was the year of the Ultrabook, 2013’s going to be remembered by the massive proliferation of laptop / tablet hybrids. One such convertible that’s just been given full marks by the FCC is ASUS’ TAICHI, an 11.6 or 13.3-inch unit that’s packing an Ivy Bridge Core i7, 4GB RAM and, most notably, a display on both sides of its lid. While there’s no official word from the company on a launch date, now that the government has given a thumbs up, it can’t be too much further out. Plausibly, a rogue Amazon listing has pegged the 11.6-inch model as costing $1,300 and arriving on October 26th, alongside Windows 8.

It would appear that Dell wants to get in on the party early with three Windows 8 computers it’s putting up for pre-order here this morning for a release date “soon after Windows 8 is officially available on October 26.” With the XPS 12 convertible laptop, the XPS One 27 All-in-one, and the Inspiron One 23 All-in-one ready for action, you’ll not be left wanting for the Windows 8 touch-capable environment in all its glory. This release will be strictly pre-order inside the United States on Friday, the 12th of October (today), with releases of the actual physical devices aimed nearer the end of this month.
This update from Dell has you not just able to pre-order the new machines, but the Windows 8 operating system on a set of other compatible Dell machines on the market right this minute as well. Of course no matter what you pick up, Windows 8 won’t be getting to your door before October 26th – after that though, it’ll be a free-for-all. Over at Dell.com they’ve got your whole Windows 8 collection, everything you could possibly want, up for pre-order and regular order right now.
Dell’s XPS 12 is a strange, flippy beast – have a peek at our hands-on from August of this year to see how it looked when Dell first brought it out for sunlight. It’s got a flip hinge to it so you can use it as a normal laptop or can twist it around and push it down for a massive tablet, too. With a full HD display at 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and full touch capacity you’ll have a hard time saying no – this attached to a price of $1,199 USD on pre-order from today.
A couple of Dell All-in-one machines are also up for order this morning, the XPS One 27 and the Inspiron One 23. With the XPS One 27 you’ll get a massive quad HD (2560 x 1440) display – the same as it’s had in the past – but this time with touch capabilities so you can make full use of Windows 8 and its full touch user interface. This update also has an articulating stand that’s able to tilt the display to a 60 degree angle – flexibility indeed! This device rings in at $1,599.99 USD. Have a peek at our XPS One 27 hands-on right this minute to see the layback.
The Inspiron One 23 brings on a lovely full HD (1920 x 1080) display and a single-cord setup to match its full touch-sensitive interface with Windows 8, all of it running on Intel’s 3rd Generation Core chipset, with several iterations available for pre-order. This model will run you $779.99 USD for starters.
Also of note is an updated version of the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook, a device that’s now got Ivy Bridge with full Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics – this update comes in at $999 USD and is up in the Dell store right this minute as well. In the UK, meanwhile, the XPS 12 convertible running Windows 8 will be starting at £999, the XPS One 27 with touch at £1,779, and the Inspiron One 23 AIO with touch at £879.
