Dell XPS 14 review a 14inch Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge and graphics might

While we can’t say that we universally liked Dell’s first attempt at an Ultrabook, the XPS 13 we reviewed about three months ago, we can quite confidently say that it earned our respect. Here was a smartly styled, sophisticated machine free of stickers and bloatware from a company that, let’s be honest, has delivered its share of each over the years. That machine was far from perfect, but it showed a purity of vision in design that you couldn’t help but acknowledge.

So where do you go from there? Why, you go bigger of course. Meet the new Dell XPS 14, successor in name only to a model that went out of production over a year ago. It is, as you might have guessed, an inch larger than the XPS 13 and so has more room for ports and pixels — but there’s more to it than that. In some ways this feels like a more polished machine than the 13 that came before, and it’s certainly faster but it, too, is far from perfect. Join us for a joyous exploration of why.

MSI Ultrabook Slider S20 coming this year?

MSI has certainly come a long way since it was introduced all those years ago, and this time around, we have word that MSI could very well be pushing for an introduction of a slider Ultrabook sometime in the fourth quarter of the year – with the asking price of $799. At that price point, it would certainly hit the sweet spot for many a discerning customer, as it is still a couple of Benjamins below the magical $1,000 mark, although you can be sure if you want to up the ante and throw in even more hardware to make this latest MSI Ultrabook run smooth and slick, you can easily break the $1,000 ceiling, especially where a larger capacity SSD is concerned.

This 11.6″ slide Ultrabook Slider S20 is said to merge the funtions of two major hardware powerhouses of today – the tablet PC and Ultrabook, tipping the scales at a relatively lightweight 1.3kg, while measuring no more than 2cm thick. Connectivity options of the Slider S20 include Bluetooth and USB 3.0, where we are looking at an October or November release. Are you primed for a new MSI Ultrabook in your collection?

MSI Slider S20 tipped for October $800+ release

MSI’s sliding/folding touchscreen ultrabook, the Slider S20 unveiled at Computex earlier this month, will carry a hefty $799-$899 price tag when it launches according to the latest rumors. The Windows 8 hybrid, fronted by an 11.6-inch touchscreen, will drop in October or November, according to DigiTimes‘ sources.

MSI is yet to confirm final specifications for the convertible, though it’s known to use processors from Intel’s 3rd Gen Core range which pits it against Microsoft Surface Pro rather than the ARM-based Surface. That also means a full version of Windows 8 rather than Windows RT.

Connectivity, meanwhile, includes Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0, along with wired ethernet and HDMI. Interestingly it seems MSI doesn’t think the S20 needs a trackpoint buried in the keyboard, instead seemingly relying solely on the touchscreen, though that could change by the time the laptop/tablet hits shelves.

There’s more on the MSI Slider S20 ultrabook in our hands-on from Computex.
