Human DNA Retrieved From Public Places Used To 3D Print Portraits

Human DNA Retrieved From Public Places Used To 3D Print Portraits

3D printing has certainly taken off in the past couple of months as we’ve seen it produce some amazing products such as designer eyewear, a bionic ear and even a kidney. But this latest feat of 3D printing is both amazing and creepy at the same time as an artist has used DNA to print 3D portraits of people.

Artist Heather Dewey-Hagborb retrieves the DNA from her subjects by stumbling onto them during her travels through a number of ways such as picking up a dropped piece of gum or discarded cigarette butt, which is then analyzed and has its DNA mined to retrieve information such as the gender, ethnicity, and eye color of the person. The DNA is then fed into a custom computer program the translates the information into a 3D model of the person’s face.

The result of the 3D printed disembodied faces isn’t an exact replica of the person, but instead, is described by Dewey-Hagborg as being more of a “family resemblance” of the actual person. Either way, we’ll be mindful of what DNA we leave out in public as we would rather not become the subject of this kind of project.

Internet Sales Tax Passes In Senate, Moves On To The House

Internet Sales Tax Passes In Senate, Moves On To The House

If you’re a regular Internet shopper, you were probably paying close attention to the news yesterday as the U.S. Senate was in the process of voting on a bill deemed the “Internet Sales Tax” bill. Unexpectedly, the Senate passed the bill Monday night, which was being introduced as a way for states to collect sales tax for online purchases more easily.

The so-called Marketplace Fairness Act passed with a vote of 69 – 27 and will now head to the House where its future is uncertain at this point due to a number of Republicans possibly viewing the bill as an increase on taxes. A total of 45 states which currently charge sales tax would require large online retailers to collect taxes on purchases made by the resident of their state. The new law would only apply to online sellers whose sales reach at least $1 million outside of states where the company has a physical operations, such as stores or warehouses. (more…)

EA Will Exclusively Develop Future Star Wars Games

EA Will Exclusively Develop Future Star Wars Games

In the first week of April, Disney announced that it was pulling the plug on LucasArts. The studio said that it had made up its mind to shift LucasArts from a developing model to a licensing model. What this meant was that other developers would be allowed to create Star Wars games under license from Disney. Electronic Arts has now officially been confirmed as the exclusive developer of new Star Wars titles. EA’s job is to handle the core gaming audience.

EA’s three top studios will be developing these titles. The BioWare team will continue developing for Star Wars franchise whereas DICE and Visceral will now be on-board as well. EA Labels president Frank Gibeau has said that the titles might borrow from films, though the games will be entirely original with an entirely different gameplay and stories. EA has not yet revealed what will happened to the Star Wars titles that were under development before LucasArts was shut down, the Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assualt. All that EA has said on this matter is that they’re not announcing any specific titles at this point in time.

Pentagon Okays Use Of BlackBerry And Samsung Devices

Pentagon Okays Use Of BlackBerry And Samsung Devices It was a couple of days ago when we brought you word that the Pentagon is mulling over the suitability of using both Apple as well as Samsung devices in their hallowed hallways, and here we are with word that the Pentagon has just approved the use of BlackBerry and Samsung devices on their Defense Department networks. The approved devices would be BlackBerry 10 smartphones (did you expect anything less?), BlackBerry PlayBook tablets that run on the Enterprise Service 10 system and Samsung’s Android Knox.

As for those who prefer to jive with Apple, it seems that you will have to wait until later this May for the Pentagon to clear iOS 6-powered devices. According to Pentagon spokesman Lt Col Damien Pickart, he mentioned that “this is a significant step towards establishing a multi-vendor environment that supports a variety of state-of-the-art devices and operating systems.” Of course, having said that, the approval of BlackBerry and Samsung devices does not mean that they will be placing product orders anytime soon, but rather, user groups within the Pentagon are able to pick and choose from a pre-determined lot. Which device do you think would have the most users?
