Final Fantasy XIV Alpha Footage Shown

Late yesterday evening, we talked about Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and its beta test plans, but this time around, here we are with the alpha footage that boasts of an instanced dungeon as well as larger than life bosses. This is the latest video for what could possibly be a hot hit when it arrives, the MMORPG known as Final Fantasy XIV. The entire video is approximately three minutes long, where you will be able to check out some dungeon crawling through instanced dungeons, and approximately 65 spells per second (better make sure you do not suffer from any epilepsy before that), alongside big (and bad ass looking) bosses Bockman and Galvanth the Dominator thumping their way around. It might be alpha footage in name, but the game itself is starting to shape up in an impressive manner, sporting smooth graphics and a matching framerate, in addition to a decent user interface.

Windows Blue Already In Alpha Testing Phase [Rumor]

windows blue render Windows Blue Already In Alpha Testing Phase [Rumor]Windows Blue was the talk of the town last month when fellow tech site The Verge revealed that Microsoft’s next-generation operating system, presumable dubbed “Windows Blue,” is coming. Details were bleak, but at least we learned that its price will be much cheaper and that Microsoft will subsequently release software updates following its launch, much similar to what Apple is doing with Mac OS X. Today, the Windows Blue rumor is very much alive, as we are hearing reports of a Taiwanese forum member who was able to post more information about the elusive OS on the forum site PC Beta. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint And T-Mobile To Offer Text-To-911 Feature By 2014

It is no wonder that the man on the street has long been hearing about new capabilities concerning emergency 911 services for many years, but so far nothing interesting has happened – yet. Perhaps things are going to change in the near future with this latest announcement, where four of the major wireless carriers in the US (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile) has agreed with the 911 Association and the Association for Public-Safety Communications Officials International to work as one on standards, procedures and technology deployments which will offer a “seamless introduction” of the tech across the great US of A. Needless to say, a proposal of this Herculean effort has already been submitted to the FCC, so we await with bated breath for word of an approval.

Of course, this is still no guarantee that it will be made available to the masses in the US within 2014, but there would have been far more specific signposts set up by then, including bounce-back notifications by June 30th, 2013, that informs texters whenever the service is not available in their area, with a “commitment” to nationwide rollouts by May 15th 2014.

Outlook.com Now Has 20 Million Active Users, Outlook For Android Launched

Following the official launch of Outlook.com in July this year, Microsoft is announcing that the app now has over 25 million users. Microsoft says that nearly a third of its Outlook.com users are active Gmail users as well. To improve the app, Microsoft hired a research firm to recruit hundreds of Gmail users to test Outlook.com. The feedback, according to Microsoft, has been positive. Some Gmail users are saying that they preferred Outlook’s clean user interface while others say that the app does a better job of blocking spam.

Microsoft also touts keyboard shortcuts, conversation threading, and instant access to search operators as the key advantages of Outlook.com. Additionally, Microsoft is announcing the Outlook app for Android. This is good news considering that Android devices aren’t “consistent in their native support for Exchange ActiveSync.” On the other hand, Windows Phone 8 devices and iOS devices that support Exchange ActiveSync have built-in support for Outlook.com, so there’s no need for a mobile app. The app is now available for free on Google Play, although it’s clearly obvious that Google has to improve the UI a bit. Although Outlook.com isn’t really new, the news today will definitely bring in more Outlook.com users.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch With Windows 8 Arriving Soon

It was not too long ago when Lenovo introduced their ThinkPad X1 Carbon notebook, where this particular mobile computing device came with a lovely carbon fiber body which enabled it to carry a 14-inch display without compromising on portability, especially when it tipped the scales at a mere three pounds. Well, it seems that Lenovo is not content with that, having revealed plans to roll out a spanking new model of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon that was created specially to cater for the new Windows 8 operating system from Microsoft.

There is a product listing for the new version which has been dubbed as the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch, where it has already appeared on the Lenovo website. So far, details remain scant and few at this point in time but the page did reveal that the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch will feature a 10 point touch screen in addition to Windows 8 touch gesture support, of course. It also does seem to point (pun not intended) towards the ability of this new notebook’s screen and keyboard to be positioned in a manner where both of them are flat on a surface, similar to its predecessor. No idea on pricing as at press time though.

Printed Circuit Board Melts In Hot Water

At the rate of smartphone and tablet adoption around the world, it goes without saying that we are faced with a very, very real issue – that our junkyards are about to be filled to the brim with electronic waste, and getting rid of them in a clean manner without causing harm to our environment is a considerable challenge. Well, scientists from the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) might have stumbled upon a method that will definitely keep most folks happy – by working on a printed circuit board which will actually disintegrate when it is immersed in hot water.

The board is made out of “unzippable polymeric layers”, which ironically are able to withstand prolonged thermal cycling and damp heat stressing, although they will separate from one another whenever exposed to hot water. Looks like your packet of powdered instant coffee and this new generation of printed circuit boards would make bosom buddies! Melting the board would make it a snap for resistors, capacitors and integrated circuits to be scraped off afterwards, allowing them to be reused since they remain fully intact. To sweeten the deal, this particular material can be used for flat, rigid boards, as well as for flexible electronics and three-dimensional structures.

Samsung La Fleur Brand Headed For Galaxy S3

Samsung does have a fashionable name for one of its “brands”, where select devices that undergo the La Fleur treatment tend to be more fashion forward. In fact, the South Korean consumer electronics giant has been churning out a handful of La Fleur edition devices since the end of 2009, and it does not look as though Samsung is about to stop anytime now. We have gotten wind that there will be a new bunch of La Fleur smartphones, where the slew of them will be powered by the Android operating system, and they are the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S Duos, Galaxy Ace Duos and Galaxy Ace 2.

The La Fleur versions of the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S Duos, Galaxy Ace Duos and Galaxy Ace 2 will arrive in the usual range of colors under that brand – which means we will be looking at plenty of white or pink, and those will be accompanied by some additional flower decoration on both sides of the handset. If you are on the lookout for older smartphone technology with a new twist on the exterior, then we are quite sure you will be happy to hear of the January 2013 release window – making it the ideal Valentine’s Day gift, perhaps?

Black Ops 2 PS3 Patched, System Lockups Are No More

For Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 players on the PS3 platform, you might be part of the unfortunate few who have experienced system freezes ever since the title launched not too long ago. Should you be one of those who are down and out on your luck, here is a wee bit of good news – it seems that Activision has rolled out a patch to tackle this particular issue specifically so that system lockups are a thing of the past. The downside to this bit of news is this – it seems that the fix only works for some, so if you are still unlucky and have your Sony PS3 hang or freeze whenever you play Black Ops 2, you will have to be a bit patient, as the company claims that they are still “doing everything [it] can to get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible”. If you are curious in downloading the patch, all you need to do is to boot the game and try to play online, and you will be led to the correct display.

PS Vita Firmware 2.0 Update

Sony will be rolling out the PS Vita firmware 2.0 update tomorrow (for folks living in Europe, you will have to hold out your patience for an extra day), where one of the biggest changes would be a drastically improved web browsing experience. To be more exact, it seems that the browser itself will come with a “small app”, allowing you to use it while you play games, without requiring you to quit your game at that point in time. Not only that, the entire browsing experience itself will also be a whole lot speedier. Last but not least, we do know that PlayStation Plus, too, will roll out alongside the update, and this translates to “free” games for you – with other features thrown into the mix, of course. By the way, if you are a PS Vita owner, are you still rocking on to your PS Vita, or is it lost somewhere in your home, gathering colonies of dust bunnies along the way?

HTC Droid DNA Officially Announced!

HTC has officially announced the long-rumored Droid DNA, the newest superphone to hit Verizon for the holiday season. The phablet-size Galaxy Note competitor was known as the HTC DLX (pronounced “deluxe”) and it will boast a 5″ 1080p display that we spotted at CEATEC a a little while back. The display is not only the only 1080p display on a smartphone, but at 441ppi, it has a higher pixel density than any other TV, tablet or smartphone on the market.  In addition to the jaw-dropping screen, the phone is also packing a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a 2500mAh battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a healthy slice of HTC Sense on top. And it’ll have LTE connectivity, which used to be a high-end handset given before the Nexus 4. The camera is also supposed to be strong, with a 8 megapixel sensor, which is slightly disappointing compared to the rumors of a 13-megapixel sensor. Plus, the Droid DNA is also the first major Android phone to come with wireless charging standard.

HTC is billing the Droid DNA as a phone, not a “phablet,” but at a 5″ screen, we’ll have to see how it feels in the hand before passing judgement.

You can pre-order a Droid DNA now. The phone itself launches on Verizon for $199 with contract on November 20.

We’re about to get some hands-on time, so stay tuned.

We’ve got the Droid DNA in our grubby little hands. Take a look at our hands-on here.
