Motorola’s Wearable Computer Beats Google Glass to Market

Google Glass, the Brin-approved, fashionable (or not) wearable computer still isn’t available to consumers, and it may be another year. If you’re itching to put a tiny screen in front of your retina, you should take a look at Motorola Solutions’ HC1 head-mounted computer. The HC1, which runs Windows CE and is powered by a TI OMAP 3 microprocessor, is practically a bargain at a $4000 asking price.  (more…)

16 crazy things we learned about Google’s data centers

Google’s data centers are secretive, massive locations filled with cutting-edge proprietary technology. So of course most Google fans will never get a chance to step inside one. But Google knows how amazing their data centers are, and so they recently put up a website with a complete Street View of its North Carolina data center and also spilled a whole lot of details to Wired reporter Steven Levy. Of course, no valuable trade secrets were disclosed. So what did we actually learn about Google’s data centers? (more…)

ZTE executives commit business seppuku, cut their own pay

ZTE, a Chinese telecommunications company, which, according to who you ask, is either a threat to national security or a middling handset manufacturer, announced today that they were going to report losses for the first nine months of 2012. In a refreshing response, top management has agreed to cut their own pay. Wish we’d see more of that from Western technology companies! We’re looking at you, RIM.

Apple patents technique that will make components appear/disappear out of nowhere

While cameras and camera flashes are more or less an integral feature in smartphones these days, their presence can sometimes prevent a sleek and minimalist phone from being created due to the camera + flash’s design being rather out of place. This might not be a big deal for most of us, but it is still something worth thinking about especially as designers try to come up with new ideas for products. Interestingly Apple has thought about that too and in a patent recently discovered by Apple Insider, it has been revealed that Apple has filed for a patent for a technique that allows components to be displayed only when they are needed. iPad Mini rumor roundup: what we think the iPad Mini will look like

There have been rumors regarding a 7-inch iPad going as far back as 2010. While the “iPad Mini” spotted back then certainly wasn’t for real, a slew of recent leaks have all but confirmed the 7-inch tablet’s existence.  So far, the media have called it the iPad Mini, although until it’s announced we really have no idea what Apple will call it.

For much of the iOS era, accurate leaks were far and few between. But it’s a new Apple–the most valuable company in the world by market capitalization–and it certainly wasn’t able to keep the details of the iPhone 5 under wraps: we knew almost exactly what it was going to look like before before it came out.

A similar thing’s happened with the iPad Mini.  We’ve seen leaks, photos, rumors and murmerings, and it all adds up to a pretty clear picture of what Apple’s smaller new hero device is going to look like. And, if Apple wants to be selling iPad Minis by the Christmas-and-shopping season, they’re going to want to release it soon. The current rumor is that invitations are going out on October 10 for an event on October 17 announcing a release date of November 2.

So let’s take a look at the rumors, shall we?

Emirates Airlines now allows in-flight calling using your cellphone

Using our electronic devices during flights are starting to become more common, although the ability to make calls via our mobile devices are still a no-no, at least until now. Emirates Airlines has announced that passengers on their A380 aircraft will now be able to make mobile phone calls thanks to their OnAir WiFi technology. Prior to that, emails and text messaging were possible via Emirates, but phone calls were not possible due to the rather clunky satellite system that was used at that time. OnAir is expected to change that and will now allow passengers to make calls during flights using their mobile devices. However calls are not allowed to be made within 250 miles of the US due to FAA rules, but it certainly is a step in the right direction.

Blackberry 10 March 2013 confirmed by RIM’s president of government relations

So yesterday we reported that according to analyst Peter Misek, Blackberry 10 will not be seeing a January 2013 release, but a March 2013 one instead. Granted March still falls under Q1, but pushing it back by two months could be considered a “delay” by some, especially since there are probably some users out there who might be looking forward to a January release. That being said, it seems that if you were hoping Misek’s predictions were wrong, well we’re sorry to disappoint as RIM’s own President of Government Relations, Clint Robinson, has confirmed the March release date as well.

This was apparently confirmed in an interview where Robinson spoke to Argentina’s Minster of Industry who was quoted as saying that they can expect new Blackberry 10 units in March 2013. Of course there is a possibility that the March 2013 timeframe could be for the Latin America market, but until carriers start announcing availability of Blackberry 10 devices, we’ll try not to speculate too much for now. Anyone else a bit bummed by this “confirmation”?
