Facebook To Open First Israel Office

Facebook To Open First Israel OfficeSocial networking giant Facebook is a company that has its fair number of offices considering the size to which it has grown over the years, and this time around, we have received news that it will be picking up an Israeli mobile technology startup – in addition to opening up its first office in Israel. Now, that would definitely be one of the more natural things for them to do instead of relocating the Israeli mobile technology startup elsewhere, right? In a statement that was issued today, Facebook claimed that they picked up Israeli mobile utility application developer Onavo in order to assist the social media giant in coming up with superior mobile products as well as to help connect more people worldwide to the Internet (and of course, to jump aboard the Facebook bandwagon).

The firm in question is Onavo, and to think that it was founded a mere three years back only to have it picked up by Facebook is definitely something to mull over in terms of its progress and capability. Onavo rolls out technology which compresses content in order for mobile users to be able to use more data. Interestingly enough, Onavo also has an office in California. Just how much did Facebook pay to take over Onavo? Israeli media reported a figure in the sum of more than $100 million, but Facebook declined to comment on the matter.

Zim, stylish and powerful Sub-$800 3D Printer with dual-head

Zim, stylish and powerful Sub $800 3D Printer with dual head

Last week, I met with Philippe Guglielmetti, CEO of Zeepro, the company behind the new consumer 3D printer Zim. Zeepro is successfully raising funds via Kickstarter to bring this sexy and powerful sub-$800 3D printer to market. Since Chris Anderson stated that “3D printing will be bigger than the web” when he left Wired in 2012, the desktop 3D printer battle is raging, and it feels like there is a new one popping up on Kickstarter every month.

I have not seen Zim in action yet, but just from the videos and the specifications, I am really impressed by the product design and the performance of this new comer in the personal 3D printing world.

Compared to the most popular devices currently available in this category, namely the Makerbot Replicator 2 and 2X, and the Cubify Cube and Cube X , the Zim performs better (on the paper) for a lower price point and a sleeker design. The $347 Pirate3D Bucaneer, which will only be available for pre-order in December, delivers an elegant and minimalistic design as well; however, it packs fewer features. You can support Zeepro via its Kickstarter campaign and get a Zim with one extruder for $599 or with 2 extruders for $799.

Rumors of Apple Revealing New Products October 22

Apple iPad Mini According to unnamed sources, rumors are that Apple is not done with new product releases for the year. According to AllThngsD Apple is planning an invitation-only event, location still undisclosed, to unveil an 5th generation iPad on October 22nd.

Allegedly the new release will be an updated iPad mini with a slimmer design, improved camera and a faster chip with the 64-bit A7. It also would have retina display like its bigger sibling and rumors of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor which is not on any iPad but was introduced recently on the iPhone 5s.

Coinciding with this news Apple shares are up by 1%, or over $4 a share. Even though the iPad remains the top competitor in tablet market Apple has seen some hefty competition from Google and more recently Amazon with the Kindle Fire. The Apple stock is still far from the $702 peak in September, 2012.

    It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! No, It’s HondaDog!

It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! No, It’s HondaDog![CEATEC 2013] Yumemi and Honda have teamed up to deliver a new driving app that they call HondaDog. You know how detailed and intricate the Japanese can be, right? Well, most of the smaller stuff tend to end up looking cute, and the HondaDog app is one of them. The entire idea of the HondaDog is to deliver a traveling companion avatar which exists on your smartphone, just like an actual dog except that you do not have to vacuum your vehicle from time to time to rid it of fur, and neither do you need to take into consideration the need to take toilet breaks – since a virtual pet dog avatar does not shed, and neither does it have bodily functions that need relieving of.

The HondaDog is also a sociable character, pretty much in the same vein as that of an actual dog. This pet avatar will be able to be introduced to other HondaDogs whenever you meet different people with the same HondaDog app on their respective mobile devices. Other than that, you can also “send” your HondaDog on an information errand, so to speak, for it to pick up details to a particular region which you intend to visit, and it will bring that right back to you. Sorta like fetching the morning paper, except that this does it in a cute manner with information that you need and want, nothing else. Seems like an app worth checking out if just for its cuteness, and I do wonder whether stuff like this will catch on in other countries or not.

ZTE Nubia Flagship To Come With Snapdragon 800 Chipset In November

ZTE Nubia Flagship To Come With Snapdragon 800 Chipset In NovemberZTE, one of the smartphone manufacturers from China who are now starting to make its presence felt worldwide, has mentioned that they have plans to introduce a new flagship device for the masses later this November. This particular flagship smartphone will run on the Snapdragon 800 processor, and will obviously target the high end market. If the name Nubia sounds familiar to you, that is because right now, the ZTE Nubia Z5 and Nubia Z5 Mini have been released already, so it is not surprising to see them concentrate on the Nubia name to introduce a new flagship this November at best, and early December at worst.

Not only that, it does seem that the new flagship will continue from where the Nubia Z5 left off. So far, hints of the hardware specifications of this alleged upcoming Nubia flagship device include a Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor that will in all probability be the MSM8974AB model, in addition to improvements made to the camera as well as other user interface features. Will the upcoming flagship be able to take the title of the thinnest 5” Full HD smartphone when it arrives? Perhaps, considering how its predecessor did so in the past. Pricing details obviously remain to be known.

Violent GTA 5 Robbery Committed By 3 Young Men

Violent GTA 5 Robbery Committed By 3 Young MenPlenty has been said about GTA 5, the recently released title on current generation consoles that look set to sell like hot cakes and in the process, perhaps break some sales records or two? Well, one thing is for sure – the GTA game series is not a title that you would use to nanny younger children, which is good since I believe they would much rather want to catch ‘em all in Pokemon, too. Well, having said that, a trio of teenagers were arrested on suspicion of robbery, where the robbery saw the following items stolen – a watch, a mobile phone, and a copy of Grand Theft Auto 5.

These three males, aged 15, 16, and 18, happen to be in custody at a north London police station at the moment after a rather violent attack on Tuesday. The Metropolitan Police did mention in a statement that a 23-year-old man who was on his way home happened to be hit with a brick followed by by stabbed, before he was robbed and relieved of his possessions, the GTA 5 copy included. Is this a case of life imitating life? There is just something about GTA 5 that drives people to do some nutty stuff, including masquerading as cops to pick up a copy of GTA 5 early.

Facebook And Twitter Hits A Wall Again In Iran

Facebook And Twitter Hits A Wall Again In IranIt was rather recent that we reported a slight easing of Iran’s government, as it seemed that both Facebook and Twitter services were made available in that part of the world, all without having to go through proxy sites and VPNs (Virtual Private Networks). This has led to plenty of new and old media alike to speculate whether this move on the quiet could usher in a new era of a more open Internet policy in Iran, especially after one takes into consideration the election of the new moderate President Hassan Rouhani. After all, Rouhani does have a Twitter account, while Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has a Twitter account as well as a Facebook page.

Unfortunately, there was no official statements which were released from Iranian authorities concerning the lifting of restrictions on Facebook and Twitter. However, it must be noted that on Sunday itself, the head of Iran’s Security Forces did mention that Facebook will remain blocked. Perhaps the opportunity of accessing both Twitter and Facebook can be attributed to a technical issue rather than a policy change, as many folks in smaller cities claim that they can no longer access Facebook and Twitter. What do you think is up with Iran?

    Samsung Galaxy Gear: Hands-On Review

Samsung Galaxy Gear: Hands On Review
The long awaited “smart watch” a.k.a. Samsung Galaxy Gear was finally unveiled today. I have to admit that I was impressed by the quality of the industrial design and the friendly user experience, although I am not sure if I would really use such a device on a daily basis. First of all the six color versions are gorgeous and the packaging of their respective boxes are amazing (check the photo gallery). Although the size of the watch module is pretty big and would better suit a man’s wrist, the adjustable band makes it wearable by a woman with a small wrist as well (like mine).

Powered by an 800 MHz processor and featuring a  1.63-inch 320 x 320 Super AMOLED tactile display,  the Samsung Galaxy Gear allows users to snap photos and short videos, record memos, access date/time/weather info, use various third-party applications including Evernote, Path, MyFitnessPal, get pedometer data, place a phone call, and more.

I had the opportunity to briefly try the Samsung Galaxy Gear and I am sharing my first impressions in this article. Check the video demo to get a good idea of how the device works.

The Samsung GALAXY Gear will be launched in more than 140 countries around the world starting from September 25.
