King Edison Pendant Lamp: Which Came First, the Light Bulb or the Chandelier?

What you see below is not a product of Photoshop. It’s the King Edison Pendant Lamp designed by Young & Battaglia, and it’s a cross between a light bulb and a chandelier.

Now normally, the chandelier would have a bunch of bulbs installed all around it. The tables are turned in this unusual lamp, though, as the chandelier is found inside a larger-than-usual “light bulb” with a diameter of 15 centimeters. It’s definitely an unusual piece to have in your home.

The King Edison is described as a combination of “the pure simplicity of an Edison light bulb with the romance and glamour of a Kings chandelier”, consisting of “a miniature brass chandelier inside a hand blown clear glass shade and satin chrome fittings.”

Something as intricate and unique as this obviously doesn’t come cheap. The King Edison is available online from Mineheart for £480 (~ $737 USD).

Diego Stocco and His Enchanting Orchestra of Modified Instruments

Music is a great medium for self-expression. But if you can’t be bothered to play traditional instruments, what then?

experibass Diego Stocco has made a name for himself with his multi-track music videos where the audio was provided by ‘playing’ common objects and modified instruments. Now he’s gone one step further and actually built his own orchestra of modified instruments.

See the Experibass and Arcophonica? There’s also the Harpiano and Glockenstrange, and I’m just getting started.

Now how’s that for musical self-expression?

Glass-Domed Terrarium Rings Put Tiny Worlds on Your Fingers

I love how terrariums manage to capture an entire little world – or at least its essence – in such a tiny amount of space. Paris-based artist HoKiou managed to make me love them just a little bit more by turning them into jewelry.

Terrarium Rings4

In keeping with the times, HoKiou’s terrarium rings feature themed-designs and environments that are fit for the season. Several rings sport creepy little polymer clay miniatures inside the dome that are perfect for Halloween, while others are bright, white, and cheery for Christmas – or any time of year.

Check out the rest of the terrarium ring designs in the gallery below.

Chair Ssstoell Might Just Give You Vertigo

I’ve seen a lot of chairs in my lifetime, and none of them are as dizzying or puzzling as the Chair Ssstoell. Even its name is complicated right from the get-go.

Ssstoell chair

It looks unstable and confusing. And from another angle, it looks like it’s comprised of three chairs that have been stacked one on top of the other, but from another, you can see that it’s actually just one chair.

Here’s a fun fact: ‘stoel’ is actually Dutch for ‘chair.’ Seeing as this one is sort of like three chairs in one, the triple ‘S’ they used for the ‘ssstoel’ part of the name is actually quite fitting.

Chair Ssstoell

The Chair Ssstoel was designed by Voortman and Girod. It’s also for sale, too, although it’s crazy expensive at $1,320 (USD – plus $157 for international shipping.) For that price, you could certainly buy three of your own chairs, stack them on top of each other, and put the other $1,000 back in your pocket.

Samsung sends Canadian a truly unique Galaxy S III, guarantees a loyal customer

And you thought your future brown Galaxy S III would be special. We’re just learning the full story of how avid fan Shane Bennett got what may be the rarest version of Samsung’s flagship phone through an unusual chain of events. After half-jokingly asking Samsung Canada for a free phone with the drawing of a dragon as a token gift, Shane was given a kangaroo drawing as a response; the overwhelming reaction to his posting that story on Reddit led to not just a thank-you trip to a Galaxy S III launch party but a custom phone designed around his off-hand doodle. We’re not kidding when we mean custom, either. Along with the distinctive front and back, his phone came with matching on-screen wallpaper and even a specially wrapped box. The likelihood of anyone else receiving a similar gesture is slim — who’d want to spoil the originality? — but credit has to go to community manager Drew Bomhof for going the extra distance and acknowledging that even a giant phone maker is only as strong as its individual customers.

Liberty DNA: The Watch Made out of Bits from the Statue of Liberty

There are watches and there are timepieces, and this has to be one of the most unique watches that I’ve every seen. This Romain Jerome watch isn’t the first watch that uses something famous in its makeup, their Iceland Volcano watch among others, but it’s definitely an interesting way to showcase your national pride.

Romain Jerome has used many exotic materials in its expensive watches. They’ve used volcanic ash, metal from the Titanic, and ever dinosaur bones. The Liberty-DNA watch uses particles from the actual Statue of Liberty, making it extremely limited. The watch also uses design elements to commemorate Lady Liberty, such as the face that’s reminiscent of her 12-pointed crown.

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, ther are only 125 of these watches being made, and if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it.
