PebbleOS 1.10 supports third-party watch faces, sorts out iOS issues

Pebble OS 11 supports thirdparty watch faces, sorts out iOS issues

Pebble has been on a rapid cadence with smartwatch updates to justify those crowdfunded dollars, and it’s not letting up just because watch shipments are well underway. PebbleOS 1.10 has arrived with support for custom watch faces built using the matching (and newly available) SDK. The revamp will be especially helpful for iOS users — we see several fixes for crashes, permissions and power in store. Everyone gets options to disable backlighting and vibrations in certain conditions, too. As such, there’s every reason to fire up the Pebble app for an upgrade, even if it’s just for some visual variety.

Facebook Messenger for Android updated with chat head support

Facebook Messenger for Android updated with chat head support

If you’re an absolute Facebook addict, then today is the day you’ve been waiting for. Home should officially be hitting the Play store at some point today. In preparation for its debut, the company has just updated its Messenger app. The change log features the usual slew of bug fixes but, most importantly, it adds support for chat heads. Those floating IM shortcuts are one of the most anticipated features of Facebook’s homescreen replacement, and appear to be as irritating as they are convenient. To get your update, head to the Play store now.

Update: The official Facebook app has also been updated, with the permissions necessary to run Home. But, we’re not seeing the launcher yet, either buried in the Facebook app’s settings or in the Play store. We’ll be keeping an eye out, though.

Twitter to launch music app this weekend, says sources

In the latest Twitter news story to surface today, sources have told the folks over at AllThingsD that the rumored Twitter music app we’ve been hearing about will be launched this Friday, with another stating that it will be launched at Coachella some time this weekend. This follows an announcement on Thursday by We Are Hunted that it was acquired by the microblogging service.

Twitter still doesn’t have anything to say on the music app, but the sources say that it will be launched during Coachella, a giant music festival in California. Multiple sources provided the information, none of them named and all said to be familiar with the situation. Considering the timing of the alleged launch and the announcement a few hours ago that Twitter has, indeed, aquired the We Are Hunted music service points to the affirmative.

The Twitter music platform is said to be a standalone app that will be available to both those with and without a Twitter account, although the former will have access to more features. Personalized recommendations will be offered to a user based on the artists they follow, as well as the artists followed by their followers. Songs and artists will be displayed with a grid design with an expanding panel with additional information.

According to sources, the music app will contain four tabs, one being a “Suggested” songs tab of content it thinks you will enjoy, as well as a “#NowPlaying” tab with, as the name suggests, songs being tweeted by followers using that hashtag. The third tab will be “Popular,” containing trending songs, followed by an “Emerging” tab, which will feature the up-and-coming songs and artists. SoundCloud, iTunes, Vevo, and more will be integrated.

Twitter Trends rolled out in more than 160 new locations

Twitter, which publicly revealed its acquisition of We Are Hunted music service earlier this evening and is rumored to be working on a music app, has expanded its Trends locations to more than 160 additional cities, offering it in locations that have never before had access and expanding it in countries that have already seen it.

Several counties that have never had Trends before, including Greece, Belgium, Norway, Kenya, Poland, Ukraine, and Portugal, have been added. In addition, more cities in countries that have already been added to the Trends list are included in the expansion, increasing overall coverage. For those just getting acquainted with the feature, Twitter offers a support article on it.

Trends is a feature that allows users to see what other users are conversing about on Twitter, such as a political debate, celebrities, news story, natural event, viral video, and more. These trending items are available for the user’s city and country, as well as globally trending topics. Users can pull up the new cities via the Trends sidebar under “Change.”

The announcement was made on Twitter’s blog by Royce Cheng-Yue, one of the company’s software engineers. This follows a Trends expansion that was rolled out back on December 5, 2012, which brought the feature to a little more than 100 cities, such as Istanul and Guadalajara. Not stopping there or with this update, however, the microblogging site will be making further expansions in the coming months.

Chrome Beta for Android updates with full-screen mode and improved Omnibox

Google rolled out a Chrome Beta update yesterday, bringing with it a couple of improvements that have been long-anticipated, and that provide Android users with some much-needed functionality. After updating, Chrome Beta for Android users will have easy full-screen Web browsing and improved search via Omnibox. The update can be grabbed now from the Play Store.

Chrome

Users have been waiting quite a while for such the fullscreen feature added into Chrome, with it now automatically switching into the browsing mode when the user begins scrolling, causing the upper navigation bar to disappear from sight. By touching the screen, the navigation bar will reappear, making it all-around unobtrusive and convenient.

Swiping upwards will make the toolbar reappear with the URL field and navigation options, such as the back and refresh buttons. Fullscreen feature aside, the latest update also brings with it simpler searching than before by altering the way Omnibox search works. While the current version requires searches to be retyped in their entirety, after updating users will be able to edit queries via the search bar without hassle.

There are a few other more minor things, such as holding the back button to reveal search history and added client-side certificate support. There are also some known bugs, including a “noticeable lag” when typing in certain text fields, duplicate items in the history tab, slow tab opening on occasion, and possible flickering pages.

Xbox SmartGlass nabs Android update with support for 7-inch or larger tablets, screen sleep override

Xbox SmartGlass nabs update, now supports 7inch or larger tablets, alwayson Experiences

Microsoft’s SmartGlass for Android app has just hit version 1.5 thanks to a fresh update on Google Play. The app, which lets users control their XBox via a smartphone or tablet, will now be optimized to work on 7-inch and larger Android tablets. Other new features include an (unfortunately-worded) “always-on” Smartglass Experiences state, which actually just prevents your handset or slate from sleeping while it’s running, along with bug fixes and “numerous design and usability improvements.” We’ll have to give it a further play to see if there’s anything juicy buried in the latter, but meanwhile, you can grab it at the break.

LG Optimus G Pro update features detailed in a walkthrough video (update: arrives April 12th)

LG Optimus G Pro Value Pack update gets a video preview that details all the new features

While the biggest question concerning LG’s 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro — when will it ship in the US — remains officially TBA, the company has posted a video preview (embedded after the break) of the software update it’s sending Korean early adopters this month. There’s also no launch date for the “Value Pack” upgrade listed, but the video does give a clear demonstration of things like Smart Video that recognizes when the viewer looks away using eye tracking technology, Dual Camera using the front and back cameras at the same time for stills (it previously did this for video), and Pause & Resume recording that brings Vine-style seamless video cuts. Check out the video to experience it for yourself, we’ll see if LG’s phablet can beat the Galaxy S4 — and, presumably, the next Galaxy Note — to market in the US with these features.

Update: We’ve got the English press release now, which details all the new features mentioned above plus a few more that are getting upgraded, and reveals the update will start going out to users on April 12th. Check out the full text after the break.

Foursquare 6.0 for iOS shifts the focus to exploration with a new home screen

Foursquare 60 for iOS swings attention to searches and local highlights

Those who’ve had the redesigned Foursquare for Android are familiar with the app’s greater priority on exploring local haunts; it’s the iOS’ users’ turn now that Foursquare 6.0 is here. The update puts the Explore search box and map right on the main page, helping socialites quickly find out what’s going on nearby. The remake also splits up activity, emphasizing closer check-ins and what’s hot in one space while keeping recommendations and more distant goings-on in another section. Foursquare’s refresh isn’t a complete revolution, but it puts the app’s two main platforms on the same page — and shows how check-ins have become just one part of a larger whole.
