Real Racing 3 update to offer new cars, new events, and iCloud support

Firemonkey and Electronic Arts have announced an update to Real Racing 3 that will hot iOS and Android soon. There’s going to be new cars, new events, iCloud saving functionality, and a new “Hunter” game mode. Plus, there’s going to be “many extra features and tweaks” coming to the new racing game. No release date has been announced, but the folks behind the game say that the update will be “available soon.”

The news was announced via Real Racing 3‘s Facebook page. Not a lot of details have been revealed about the new update, but two new cars will be joining the current fleet of vehicles: the Camaro ZL1 and the Cobalt SS — both of which are Chevrolet cars. Other than that, “100+ new events” that will be coming to the game, as well as the new “Hunter” mode, which we have yet to find out what that is.

The video above shows off the Camaro and Cobalt in action, but not much else is revealed. In the video’s description, however, we’re teased with a new “statistics leaderboard” that will allow racers to “compare and compete with friends.” Again, we’re not sure what that will entail exactly, but it seems fairly promising.

As for iCloud functionality, we’re not sure how exactly it will be incorporated into the game, but it will most likely allows Real Racing 3 gamers to switch between their iOS devices and start back up where they left off. For instance, one might play the game on their iPad, and then switch to their iPhone later on, picking up where they left off. Obviously, this feature won’t come to Android, but iOS users will certainly enjoy it.

Check out our review of Real Racing 3 to learn more about the game.

Evernote Hello for iPhone updates with passcode lock, improved contacts

Evernote is one of the most popular note-taking apps around. However, it does a whole lot more than just hold your notes. There’s a bin-full of apps that Evernote has, one of which is Evernote Hello — an app that helps you remember the people you meet, and it received a big update today that gives users passcode lock capabilities, better business card scanning, and improved contacts.

Screen Shot 2013-04-05 at 9.55.14 AM

While you can scan business cards in the regular Evernote app, Evernote Hello is specifically built for it. The app can connect to Facebook and LinkedIn to automatically build profiles of the people whose business cards you scan. The update includes flash controls, as well as “a number of improvements and adjustments” for iPhone 4 users.

Evernote Hello has also added passcode lock capabilities, but it’s sadly only available to premium users. However, that could be reason alone to opt for the premium version of the app. Privacy and security are all the rage these days, and you probably don’t want curious eyes taking a peek through all of your Evernote contacts.

Other than that, Evernote added a host of other improvements, such as numerous bugfixes and general performance enhancements to the app. They also added the ability to let you update the Title and Organization fields for your Hello Contacts, making it easier to tell who’s who while browsing through your contacts.

Chrome 27 Beta now available, promises faster speeds

Chrome 27 Beta browser has been released by Google, bringing with it some goodies for developers, as well as faster page loading to the tune of about 5-percent. Users who don’t mind dippingo into beta territory can grab the latest download now from the Chrome beta page. We’ve got a run down of the new features and improvements after the jump.

Chrome 27 Beta

The obvious feature most users will notice is the speed improvements, which are said to increase the rate of content loading by 5-percent. This is due to behind the scenes changes to the browser’s resource scheduler, decreasing pre-loaded resources and using an idle connection more often. In addition, webpagetest.org Speed Index values are now included in the metrics used to assess page load speed improvements.

Other changes and additions are specific to developers, and include HTML5 date and time forms, which are featured in the image above. There’s also now live audio input to Web Audio API for the Windows and Mac versions of Chrome, as well as Sync FileSystem API for Chrome Packaged Apps. Improvements have been rolled out for the network panel, bringing customizable columns and the ability to “Copy as cURL” a resource by right-clicking on it.

There are a variety of other features for devs, which those who are interested can check out in full here. In case you didn’t hear, Google announced yesterday that it will be forking a new rendering engine called Blink from WebKit, promising to bring with it speed and to eventually spur innovation. You can read more about those plans, as well as what one Chrome dev has to say, here.

Box for Android scores new sharing and media playback options

Box for Android scores new sharing and media playback options

Box subscribers that are enjoying the cloud service on an Android handset or slate can’t complain about lack of updates to the app, and the same goes for those on one of the other platforms. Today, however, it’s Box for Android that’s on the receiving end of some more practical and valuable features, with version 2.1.5 bringing additional options to the app’s shared link permissions and the ability to (finally) preview media files. It’s worth nothing, though, that while all users can sample audio recordings on the go, the video feature, on the other hand, will only be available to folks with a Box Enterprise account — and mum’s the word on whether or not we can expect that to change at some point in the future. Either way, we’ll leave you with the vid after the break for now, which lets all interested (and curious) parties see the new bundle in action before they potentially get going with the download.

To give you a quick refresh, “Perfect for” provides listeners with the option to choose from more than 1,500 curated stations that are based on current moods and activities, while the alarm clock simply allows reminders / alerts to be customized to launch with any music or radio stations. So, Android users, fret not, as iHeartRadio hasn’t forgotten about you; perhaps it was just making sure the new tidbits were — you guessed it — perfect for you.

AT&T LG Optimus G Jelly Bean update rolling out today

AT&T announced today that they are beginning to roll out Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for the LG Optimus G. Rumors have been flying around just recently about the possibility of the device receiving the latest Android version, but AT&T has made it official. Those wielding an Optimus G should be seeing the update show up soon.

Jelly Bean comes with some impressive improvements compared to Ice Cream Sandwich. Jelly Bean users can take advantage of improved notifications, Google Now, and some UI tweaks that make performance a lot smoother thanks to Project Butter. However, the AT&T update specifically comes with support for Isis Mobile Wallet, which is available to use in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah.

AT&T also mentions that the LG Optimus G is the “official mobile device of NCAA March Madness,” which is still going on now, with the final four teams ready to face off this Saturday. As for what this means for Optimus G users, you’ll be able to watch the games using the March Madness Live app, and the only requirement is that you have to login using your cable subscription credentials.

In any case, if you don’t see the update automatically hitting your Optimus G, you can head to Menu -> Settings -> General -> About phone -> Software Update and see if the update has made its way to you. If it has, simply connect to a WiFi network and off you’ll go. Be sure to tell us how you like it in the comments below.

Google TV Remote app for Android gets its first update, with voice search and design tweaks

Google TV Remote app for Android gets its first update, with voice search and design tweaks

The official Google TV Remote app for Android has been around since late 2010, but it only just received its first update since launch. So what’s changed? Support for voice commands has been extended for compatibility with Voice Search on Google TV 3.0, the old swiping directional circle has been replaced with an easier to use tappable d-pad, the look has changed slightly (check after the break for a screen of the old UI) there’s accessibility support, and now the icon is sporting a small microphone. They’re all minor tweaks, but after a couple of years, it’s nice to see any attention being paid. We’ll see if bigger changes for the platform are in store at Google I/O in May.

Update: Now that the official app has been updated, third party apps may add similar features, including the popular Able Remote which also added Voice Search.

Microsoft updates SkyDrive for iOS app to version 3.0

Back in December 2012, there was a bit of a butting-of-heads situation betwixt Apple and Microsoft over the iOS SkyDrive app, which concerned the amount of moolah Apple kept from SkyDrive subscriptions upgraded via the iOS app. Such upgrades were considered in-app purchases, and as such were subject to Apple’s 30-percent cut. It would seem the issue has been resolved, with Microsoft rolling out its SkyDrive for iOS update today.

Skydrive iOS

Word about the issue between Microsoft and Apple had come from multiple sources who were said to be familiar with the situation. According to the rumors, Microsoft claimed that it shouldn’t be hit with the 30-percent fee because the subscriptions were not exclusive to iOS, and in the end the company sought a deal with Apple. Potentially, the dispute could have lead to the SkyDrive app being removed from the App Store.

Whether a deal was struck, the fee was removed, or Microsoft gave in is unknown, but the company has released version 3.0 of its SkyDrive for iOS app, and so Apple fans of Microsoft’s cloud storage service needn’t worry. This latest version includes a few improved features, a change to the user interface, and some new features that haven’t been seen before. The app now supports both the iPad mini and the iPhone 5.

In addition to the added support, the app’s icons have been updated, and the user interface itself has been tweaked. Photo optimization has been implemented, including the ability to download full-res images to an iPad and iPhone, the ability to change the size of an image upload/download, and metadata is now preserved when files are backed up to SkyDrive. The saving and opening of SkyDrive files on other iOS apps has been improved, and there have been a variety of other small tweaks, fixes, and performance boosts, as well.
