Google Now gets new features in latest Search update

Google has been rolling out new functionality to quite a few of its services lately, including full-size photo support for Google+, improved auto-complete predictions in Gmail, and data autosync for Chrome for Android, to name a few. Now we’re seeing another update, this time for Google Now. With this update, Android users will find additional Google Now settings in Google Search, including real-time package tracking.

Google Search

Google Now is the handy service from Google that offers you everything you need right before you need it automatically, available to those running Android Jelly Bean handsets and the Google Search app. It does this via cards, which provide things such as airport and gate information as your flight nears, for example. If you’re not familiar with the service, you can check out our hands-on review of it here.

With today’s Google Search for Android update, which is available from the Play Store now, a couple new features have been added to Now, with perhaps the best update being to the package tracking feature. Once updated, users will be able to track packages in real time from supported carriers if they have a tracking number for the shipment. The card has been updated, as well.

Results are said to be faster with this update, but you’ll have to check that one out for yourself (let us know if you’ve noticed a speed increase in the comments!), and in addition, settings and information can be accessed about cards directly from the card via a small “i” icon, which allows users to, for example, mark the card as something they aren’t interested in to help generate better results in the future.

Microsoft updates SkyDrive for iOS to v3.0, touts support for more devices and revamped user experience

Microsoft updates SkyDrive for iOS to v30, touts support for more devices and revamped user experience

It’s been quite a few months since Microsoft touched the SkyDrive application on Apple’s mobile platform, but today, after some well-documented delays, the company’s finally delivering an update to its iOS offering — a pretty hefty one, no less. Included in this new version is, most notably, added support for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini, while a refreshed overall user experience, new app icons and enhanced saving options are also in tow with this release. In addition to these tidbits, SkyDrive will now allow iDevice users to easily grab their full-res photos from within the app, as well as determine the size of uploaded and downloaded picture files. Better yet, the long-overdue update just went live in the App Store, so it’s about that time for Redmond’s cloud surfers to savor what they’d been patiently waiting for.

BIG JAMBOX Updated

BIG JAMBOX UpdatedThere is nothing quite like a new firmware update to breathe new life into a particular device, and it also helps you skip out on a product upgrade cycle, too, helping you save more money along the way. It seems that the BIG JAMBOX is shaping up to be like fine wine, as it gets better with age, although do not expect it to physically add on new components to sound better in time, as it can only fall back on a firmware update to get the job done. The latest firmware update will see the Jawbone BIG JAMBOX receive superior battery life compared to before – and we are talking about an additional 2 hours, in addition to improved audio streaming and additional controls.

This particular firmware update for the BIG JAMBOX 2.0 from Jawbone will be free, so you need not fret about staring down at an empty wallet. Not only that, this update will also boast of new AAC support for iOS 6.1, letting your ears enjoy improved audio streaming with fewer dropouts and interruptions at greater distances, among others. It is highly recommended to make an upgrade to iOS 6.1 before proceeding with your BIG JAMBOX’s update.

iPhone 5 carrier update may bring T-Mobile LTE to unlocked GSM models

iPhone 5 carrier update may bring T-Mobile LTE to unlocked GSM models

Word on the street is that an update will be hitting the iPhone 5 on April 5th that will turn on access to T-Mobile’s LTE network on unlocked GSM models. While you’ll have to wait until April 12th to pick up the iOS handset direct from the magenta-hued carrier, those who have been running rogue with unlocked devices from AT&T or purchased direct from Apple should soon be able to run at full, blistering 4G speeds. (Where the fledgling network has been fired up, at least.) The internal notice obtained by TmoNews (which you can see after the break) reads:

“The T-Mobile Carrier Update is a minor iOS software update that enables official iPhone support by T-Mobile. When installed, the software update enables a handful of capabilities like Visual Voicemail, MMS Settings and Network/Device optimizations that customers do not have access to today. On April 5, the software update will begin being pushed via OTA to all iPhone devices on the T-Mobile network with iOS 6.1.x or higher.”

So it’s not just LTE, but also some of the basic features that make the iPhone such a compelling product, which will suddenly turn on for T-Mo customers. We’ll know soon enough if there’s truth to these rumblings, but we’d imagine the iOS update would need to be pushed out ahead of the official T-Mobile iPhone launch.

Feedly updates mobile app, reports 3 million Google Reader refugees

Remember when Google announced that they’d be shutting down their Reader service? Of course, who can forget? Many users were upset by the news, and while Google Reader isn’t shutting down for another three months, users are already finding alternatives, Feedly being one of the most popular, with over three million users switching over to Feedly from Google Reader.

slashgear-0001

In response to the massive spike in users, Feedly has updated its mobile app for both iOS and Android. The user interface received a slight update, making swiping and navigating through stories much more easier this time around. The app also has a new discovery algorithm that takes popular stories for the day and moves them to the top of the list.

slashgear-0000

They’ve also made searching and sharing a lot quicker and easier, as well. Searching for a website to add to your feed is amazingly fast, and I was extremely shocked at how quick it can be to search for a website. Sharing an article is also dead easy, thanks to a new drop-down menu that lets you share something to your favorite social network.

Feedly was one of our suggestions in our post about five alternatives to Google Reader, and while it certainly doesn’t have the simplicity of Google Reader, the design and execution of Feedly is rather good. It’s said that Digg will be building its own alternative and releasing it at some point, which means that Feedly could have some serious competition sooner or later.

Skype for Windows 8 gains contact blocking and performance improvements

Skype for Windows 8 gains contact blocking and performances improvements

Those of you using Skype in Windows 8 will be happy to know that Microsoft’s just bumped the app to version 1.6. It’s been a few months since the last update, and this revision brings more features to the table, including contact blocking and a slew of performance tweaks. You’re now able to block users, with an option to remove or report the offending party. Speed and reliability have been improved, especially when loading contacts, and a number of bugs have been fixed, including one where the outgoing video was not always displayed after switching cameras. The update’s available in Windows Store, so what are you waiting for?

MLB At Bat mobile app updated in time for Opening Day

MLB At Bat is the official mobile app for everything baseball during the season. The league updated the app last month for the 2013 season, but the overal layout remained the same. However, the iOS app has been updated again, coming with a slight redesign, the addition of a classic games library, and Apple Passbook support.

2013-02-22-13.24.47-580x350

The app is universal between the iPhone and iPad, but there are new features that have come exclusively to each device. The iPad version of the app now has a new video section featuring more highlights, as well as sortable batting, pitching, and fielding statistics for players. As for the iPhone version, the app gets redesigned individual team pages and an updated news section interface.

Furthermore, the app is now available for BlackBerry 10 devices. It was promised earlier in the year that the league would bring the app to BlackBerry’s new platform before Opening Day, and it looks like they’ve kept on that promise. The app is free in BlackBerry World, but as with the other apps, you’ll have to pay a subscription fee to get all of its features.

Passbook support is also now available within the iOS version of the app, allowing users to store their tickets right on their device. So far, 11 teams support Passbook, including the Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, and the Boston Red Sox. Three more teams will announce Passbook support later this year. MLB Opening Day is Sunday, March 31.

SoundHound now scavenging tunes in more tablet-friendly Android version

SoundHound reveals new Android tablet, Rdio friendly update

If you’ve ever had an earworm you just can’t put a name to, the SoundHound music recognition app — that even translates your humming — can be just the sorcery you need. There’s now an Android version with a more tablet-centric design and tighter Google integration that brings “streamlined sharing to Facebook, Twitter and more,” according to the company. It also trumpeted a stronger relationship with digital music service Rdio, which added interactive music mapping to its SoundHounded track-linking abilities, letting you see others across the globe with the same musical tastes and bad memory. You can grab it at Google Play or Amazon’s Appstore for Kindle, but if you’re as tone deaf as some of us, don’t forget the auto-tune.

OUYA details launch titles, day-one software update

OUYA updates backers about what to expect, including launch titles and a dayone update

The OUYA Tegra 3-powered Android game console is having quite a day, but now that it’s shipping, CEO Julie Uhrman is informing early recipients of what to expect when they open the packaging. According to an email sent out to Kickstarter backers this evening, their new box will have a software update required as soon as it’s plugged in. After the Wii U we hope this isn’t a trend (but fear it is) although the Ouya promises to take only seconds or at most minutes to complete. Also detailed are the 104 games already available from the 8,000 registered developers including Beast Boxing Turbo, Stalagflight, and Knightmare Tower, plus entertainment apps like XBMC and Flixster. The games are all free to try out, but a credit/debit card is required upfront.

We’ve already offered our opinion of the shipping hardware after a quick hands-on, although backers are encouraged to contribute their own during the preview period before it officially launches. To that end, the company is planning a Reddit AMA next month and will have its own forums available for feedback soon. Until then, you can get the rest of the info directly at the source link below.
