TiVo Premiere fall update starts rolling out with more HD menu screens and a few other tweaks

We got an early peek at some of the newly revamped menus from TiVo’s fall update a few days ago, and now the company has announced it is officially rolling out to retail Premiere DVRs, with cable-provided boxes getting the update at some point in the future. Those on the priority list are first up so some TiVo Community posters report they’ve already received it and can confirm the Netflix app is “still terrible.” Besides the upgraded screens for Season Pass Manager, To Do List, History and My Shows (beyond the new look, they each have gained a few new features), Parental controls has replaced KidZone settings, there are some new games in the apps menu and users can name their DVR in the menus. Hit the source link to check out the full list of changes,

Skitch updated with “full Evernote treatment”

If you’re an Evernote user on Android and you’ve never used Skitch, now is a better time than ever – they’ve just updated their build to include more integration between apps than ever! This update brings what the developers behind both apps call the “full Evernote treatment” which includes a full overhaul on the aesthetics you’ve got in your user interface – and on your ability to use the app as well, of course. This update also includes several new features that’ll help you edit images for notes to your delight.

The update to Skitch includes a brand new clean homescreen, first of all, making it easier to use and nicer than ever to look at. You’ve got Pixelate and Highlighter now to help edit images, too. With Pixelate you’ve got the ability to obscure part of an image if you want it to be entirely private. With Highlighter you’ve got basically the opposite of Pixelate – it’s the partially transparent paintbrush you’ve been waiting for – highlight those notes!

You’ve got a brand new Planning tool, too – here you’ll be able to select, move, and resize all of your annotations in notes galore. Make sure you’re taking extra special care to plan, highlight, and pixelate with no less than the most refined version of Skitch on the market yet. This version is available for download right this minute from the Google Play app store across the USA and in most regions across the planet as well.

Have a peek at this new version of Skitch and let us know how it’s working out for you – also have a peek at our timeline below to see recent news surrounding Evernote to see how you’ll be able to go cross-platform no matter where you’re going or what you’re working with! Keep taking those notes!

Pandora app gets major redesign on Android and iOS with new social features

Pandora app gets major redesign on Android and iOS with new social features

Numerically, going from version 3.2 of an app to 4.0 makes much more sense than starting at 1.7. But, Pandora won’t let a little thing like logic stand in its way. Today both the iOS and Android editions of the internet radio app are being updated to 4.0, regardless of the latter’s lagging version number. 4.0 brings with it a significant refresh of the UI which Pandora bills as “uniform,” though we’d call them feature equivalent instead. “Uniform” implies that the apps look exactly the same, when in fact they adhere to the to the design language of their respective platforms. In addition to a new look there’s a lot of new capabilities baked in, including quicker access to genre stations and the ability to rename stations you’ve created. There’s also a new personal music profile that offers a detailed timeline of your listening habits, which you can share with others. (You can also keep your profile private, just in case you’re embarrassed about that Quad City DJ’s station you’re always listening to.) The new social angle is highlighted with a music feed page that lets you see what your friends and people with similar tastes are listening too. Hit up Google Play and iTunes to update now, and don’t miss the gallery below and the PR after the break.

Roku update adds cross-provider search over Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

Roku update adds crossprovider search across Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

We’ve seen web portals that let you search for TV and movies on the internet across different services, but a new update for Roku is bringing that capability directly to its set-top boxes. Whether you’re searching by movie, TV show, actor or director it will sniff out related content across some of the higher profile services it offers, including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, Vudu and HBO Go. The new Roku Search function is front and center (once your second gen HD or higher player has been updated to the latest version) and in our tests worked quickly, pulling up content wherever it was available and mentioning if it was available in HD. The only downside is navigating the onscreen keyboard via remote, although you can always sub in your mobile device thanks to those recently upgraded remote apps for iOS and Android. All in all Roku says it can reach its tendrils across around 130,000 titles and almost 100,000 actors and directors. Check after the break for a couple of screenshots and a quick demo video, hit the official blog for more info or force an update on your hockey puck to check it out yourself.

HTC One X sees Jelly Bean rollout in Taiwan and Singapore, One S update reportedly coming soon

HTC One X sees Jelly Bean rollout in Taiwan and Singapore, One S update reportedly coming soon

We’ve known for months that HTC intends to upgrade the One X to Jelly Bean, but now it appears the update is finally going live, at least for folks in Taiwan. Members of the XDA Developers forum are chiming in about a 352.87MB OTA update that’s available within both HTC’s home country and Singapore, which brings Android 4.1.1 and HTC Sense 4+ to the One X. Jelly Bean’s appearance for the handset matches an earlier report from Engadget Chinese of an incoming update promised by HTC Taiwan. According to PocketDroid, general manager of HTC North Asia, Jack Tong, announced that One X users within Asia will see the update begin to roll today, and that the One S will also receive Jelly Bean a tad later. We’ve reached out to HTC to verify Mr. Tong’s comments, and for clarification of specific regions throughout Asia.

[Thanks, Ryan]

TiVo teases long-awaited HD guide upgrades for fall DVR update

TiVo teases longawaited HD guide upgrades for fall DVR update

When we originally reviewed the TiVo Premiere DVR back in 2010, one of our laments was that its revamped HD guide style didn’t cover all of the screens in its menu system, and the issue still existed when we reviewed the XL4 earlier this year. Finally, that’s being addressed, as TiVo VP Margret Schmidt has confirmed the upcoming fall update will bring reworked screens for the To Do List, Season Pass Manager and My Shows (for networked DVRs), and tweeted screenshots. Also of note are a number of Comcast areas recently added to the list of places that support Xfinity VOD via TiVo, so check your zip code to be sure. As far as the update goes, as usual, if you’d like to be first on the list to try it out, go ahead and sign up on the Priority list right away.

Flipboard for Android gains audio, lets us tune into SoundCloud from our Samsung

Flipboard for Android gains audio, lets us tune into SoundCloud from our Samsung

Flipboard on iOS has had audio for some time, giving users the chance to go all high-brow as they listen to NPR while browsing the news on their iPad. It’s Android’s turn to adopt that cultured stance: an update to Flipboard on its newer platform includes the full, listen-in-the-background Audio category channel selection, whether it’s thoughtful public radio snippets or spotlights on podcasts and artists. SoundCloud mavens get the biggest fill, both through a direct link to their account as well as a list of specialized channels. Anyone who can already use Flipboard for Android just needs to hit Google Play to add the new audio dimension; Kindle Fire and Nook owners should see a fully tailored experience in a matter of days.

Final Cut Pro X update brings RED support

Apple released an update for its Final Cut Pro X video editing software yesterday, adding support for RED cameras and multichannel audio file editing in the timeline. The update came amidst announcements of the new iPad mini and Macs, bringing the application up to version 10.0.6. Final Cut Pro X was released last summer.

The previous version of Final Cut Pro was met with some fairly harsh criticism from users due to incompatibility with many plugins, standard formats, and the previous version of the software. Not helping the matter, it had a completely redesigned interface that was different than users were accustomed to. Apple soothed the minor uproar by promising updates, which it did eventually release in September and January.

In addition to the new big features, the Final Cut Pro X update also brings with it a unified import window, a redesigned share feature that allows users to export either complete projects or just timeline selections, and dual clip viewers with scope. MXF plugins are now supported, and the compound and clip controls have been improved, as well as its handling of XML files.

Final Cut Pro X is a non-linear editor for Apple users that’s aimed at professionals, many of which have complained about the application. Production company Bunim/Murray announced back in January that it would be switching from Final Cut to Avid, the reason being that Apple wasn’t meeting its long-term needs. While the addition of RED support, as well as the other features and improvements, will no doubt catch some professionals’ attention, it’s yet to be seen if Apple can successfully keep the tide from shifting out of the company’s favor.

Skype 6.0 lands with Microsoft and Facebook account integration, Retina support

Skype 6.0 lands with Microsoft and Facebook account integration, Retina support

You’re probably saying to yourself, “didn’t Skype just get a Windows 8-friendly refresh?” Why yes, yes it did. But Skype 6.0 here isn’t limited to Windows RT slates, instead it’s designed for more traditional Windows systems and even has a similarly numbered OS X counter part. There’s a number of notable changes here, including the ability to sign in directly with your Facebook or Microsoft account. (If you’ve got a Live Messenger, Hotmail or Outlook.com account, then you’ve got a Microsoft account.) The most visible changes, however, will be the “flattened” Don’t-call-it-Metro-friendly UI on Windows and the addition of Retina display support on OS X. There’s a few other minor changes, including some additional localizations, which you can read about at the source. And heck, since you’re already there, might as well download Skype too.
