Google tweaks Google+ and Play Music apps for Android

Google tweaks Google and Play Music for Android

Nobody can accuse Google of being lax with its recently-booming social network or Play Music Android player, as updates seem to be arriving at healthy intervals. Another one just dropped for each that fixes a Galaxy SIII freezing issue in Music, while adding instant mixes beyond 25 songs, the ability to shuffle by album, artist or playlist, new default album art and others for that app. Meanwhile, Google+ has added linking to new posts, a revised notification tray and more community moderation features. Those will make an automatic appearance on your device if your settings are in order — if not, check the source for more info.

Angry Birds Star Wars adds 20 levels in Escape from Hoth update [hands-on]

Less than a couple days after Rovio teased a new update for Angry Birds Star Wars, the company has released the Escape from Hoth update, which adds 20 new levels to the game, as well as new types of enemies. Plus, there’s new bonus levels that introduce more boss fights. It’s a free update, so if you already have the game, it’s certainly worth checking out.

Most notably in this update is the infamous asteroid field that was featured in the movie, where the gang had to navigate their way through the whole mess. In the game, you make your way through the asteroid field while trying to take down the enemies as well, which now include the “mynock pigs,” which are essentially pigs with bat wings that can float in mid-air instead of simply sitting atop rocks and other surfaces.

The video doesn’t show us a lot of the new update, so if you really want to find out what you’ll be getting yourself into, we suggest firing up the game and checking out the new levels. However, we ended up checking it out for ourselves and we have to see we really like what we see. The mynock pigs are especially cute, and navigating the asteroid field is definitely a new experience that we find both challenging and exciting.

The update is available for iOS and Android versions as we speak, and it should be hitting Windows Phone and BlackBerry here shortly. The update will also be available for the Kindle Fire version, as well as on OS X and Windows. The game is free on Android devices, while it costs $0.99 on iOS, and $4.99 on the desktop.

Dropbox Documents Preview announced, makes it easier to browse photos and docs

Today, Dropbox announced quite a few new features for its web interface during an event at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco. One of the new features is called Documents Preview, which will help users browse files quickly and select the ones they need. The company also showed off a new photos tab that makes it easier to view and share photos that users have uploaded.

dropbox_logo

The new features aren’t available just yet, though. The company says that users should be seeing the new features in the next few months. However, it’s important to note that Documents Preview won’t support all file types, but the more popular ones will be supported, including .doc, .docx, and .pdf. For files that are not supported, users will still have the option to download or share the file like usual.

Dropbox also updated photo views on the web interface, laying out photos in a grid of thumbnails and organizing them chronology by when they were taken, rather than by name. A similar feature has already launched in Dropbox’s Android app in a bit of a beta preview of this functionality, but it will hit the web interface within a few months. Furthermore, the company is making it easier to share photos, allowing users to select photos from the web viewer and create new albums to share to social media or send through email.

These updates and new features are just another stepping stone for Dropbox to become more than just a simple file-sharing service. The company is looking to make it easier to manage all those files that you store in your Dropbox, and of course, many of them are photos and documents that can take a while to sift through if not organized properly.

Rovio teases “Escape from Hoth” update for Angry Birds Star Wars

Rovio’s latest Angry Birds installment, Angry Birds Star Wars, is still in the top 5 in the iTunes App Store after being released a few months ago, and in typical Rovio fashion, it seems the developer will be releasing an update to the game that will include some new features and new levels that players can conquer.

724453521

Rovio teased us about the possible update via Twitter, with a cute little graphic of the Millenium Falcon making its way through a cave. Rovio uses the hashtag #EscapefromHoth, indicating that we’ll see some pretty exciting stuff in the update that will deal with the icy planet and escaping from its tundra-like bitterness.

Other than that, we’re not given any more details, but of course, anyone familiar with The Empire Strikes Back will know that the cave is the one that Star Wars gang hide in while trying to escape from the Imperial Fleet. We’re not sure how this will tie in with Angry Birds, but we’re excited nonetheless.

Whether we might see new birds, new powers, or more features coming to the game, it’s almost guaranteed that we’ll be seeing some new levels, but either way, we’re interested in seeing what we’ll be getting ourselves into. If you still haven’t checked out the game, it’s available for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

XBMC 12 Frodo now available with Android and Raspberry Pi support

XBMC launched version 12.0 Frodo today, bringing a ton of new features and opening up support to more platforms this time around. The open-source media center software was previously in beta for quite some time, but now it’s available to all, and it comes with a ton of new features that makes version 12 one of XBMC’s biggest updates.

Screen Shot 2013-01-29 at 11.39.53 AM

For starters, the ever-popular media center software now fully supports Android and the Raspberry Pi, making it even more tempting to want one of those $35 mini computers. Other new features to version 12 include HD audio support, including DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD, thanks to the new XBMC AudioEngine (OS X and iOS support not yet available, though).

There’s also support for live TV and DVR functionality, as well as 64-bit support in both OS X and Linux. You’ll also get 10-bit H.264 video decoding and improved AirPlay support across all platforms. Other smaller updates include improved controller support in Windows and Linux, advanced filtering, video library tags, and advanced UPnP sharing.

XBMC has certainly come a long way, and those who passed on it because of its lack of several key features may want to give it a second look now. Plus, with support for the Raspberry Pi, we should be seeing tons of new hardware ideas come to fruition from DIYers everywhere. This may just be the version of XBMC that takes DIY home theaters to the next level and beyond.

Apple TV update brings Bluetooth keyboard and “Up Next”

Apple released iOS 6.1 today for iOS devices, bringing with it some improvements to Siri and enhancements to iTunes Match. However, the company also quietly outed an update for Apple TV, which introduces Bluetooth keyboard support, a new feature called “Up Next,” and improvements to iTunes Match as well.

apple-tv

Both second- and third-generation Apple TV units are receiving the update over-the-air, and for those who have been yearning for Bluetooth keyboard support are finally getting it. Users will now be able to type and search with ease without having to use the remote. Of course iPhone and iPod Touch users can use their devices, but those without an iOS device were left in the cold until now.

The update also brings a new feature called “Up Next,” which was introduced not too long ago in iTunes 11. The new features queues up content for you, similar to a playlist, and plays each piece of content automatically one after the other. This is surely a big feature for not only iTunes users, but Apple TV users as well.

In today’s iOS 6.1 update, the company introduced some improvements to Siri, including the ability to purchase movie tickets through Siri. Apple also introduced redesigned music control buttons, as well as new MapKit framework enhancements. And don’t forget about added LTE support for more carriers on the iPhone 5.

Go Get iOS 6.1 Right Now

iOS 6.1 is out now and ready for your downloading pleasure. It’s a relatively minor update, including LTE support for more carriers, Fandango ticket purchasing through Siri in the U.S., and the ability for iTunes Match subscribers to download individual songs from iCloud. Apple is also adding improved iOS 6.1 APIs for developers, making it easier to integrate the Apple Maps database into other apps, if you want to do that for some reason. And if you’ve got an Apple TV, you just got new Bluetooth keyboard capability. More »

Tasker for Android updates with completely new UI

The popular automation utility for Android, Tasker, essentially turns your smartphone into a superphone of sorts. It can do any number of things (except make your bed for you), and it’s arguably one of the best utility apps that you can get on Android. Even better, though, is that the app updated today with a new, cleaner look.

Screenshot_2013-01-22-15-23-08 copy

This particular version is in beta mode, so it’s not available in the Google Play store just yet, but you can download it off of the developer’s website for free. Otherwise, the final version will just cost you a few dollars, but it’s well worth it. This beta version has all the same features as the paid version, but comes with a new interface that follows the Android UI guidelines.

The beta is available for all Android 4.0-and-above devices. It includes three themes for skinning and also offers new icons. Plus, it’s way easier on the eyes and looks a lot like a traditional Android interface now, as opposed to the dark blue and orange theme that the app has kept for a while now.

If you’ve never used Tasker before, it’s an in-depth automation utility app that can do almost endless actions with your Android device, such as turning WiFi on when you get home, switching the sound profile to silent during certain hours, launching a particular app when headphones are plugged in, and even having certain actions take place when you place a call.

eBay iOS app updates with improved search and easier selling

eBay‘s mobile app has been getting better and better with each update, and the company released a new update recently that comes with some significant improvements, namely better search capabilities, new features that make selling items easier, and an improved checkout process that makes buying items on the auction site easier as well.

image0000

The updated app includes a new listing flow, and not only does it feature category, pricing, and shipping guidance, but the photo flow has also been improved as well with more editing tools. Photos are important for making a solid eBay listing, so the new tools will undoubtedly be useful to a lot of power sellers.

The best part, however, is the ability to save multiple listing drafts when selling items. Furthermore, you can finish and start your listings in the iOS app as well as the eBay website on the computer. A perfect scenario is making the whole listing on the desktop and then heading out with your phone to snap a picture of the item in question, adding a few more details, and then posting the listing directly from your mobile device.

The new app looks generally the same as it has before, though. This is merely just a feature update rather than a visual overhaul — they did the redesign a couple months when the company changed its logo and branding. Many casual eBay users probably won’t take too much advantage of the new features, but hardcore users will definitely get some use out of it.

eBay is a free download, and the update is available now in the iTunes App Store.

Foursquare adds “Like” feature to check-ins for users outside of friend zone

Foursquare rolled out a minor new feature today that lets your Facebook or Twitter friends “like” your Foursquare check-ins even if they’re not connected as your friend on Foursquare. For now on, when you share your Foursquare check-ins with friends on Twitter or Facebook who are also on Foursquare, they’ll be able to like it, regardless of friend status on Foursquare.

foursquare_app-580x478

Foursquare will even send you a notification whenever someone outside of your Foursquare friend zone likes one of your check-ins. However, these can easily be turned off in the settings if you don’t want your email to get bombarded with pesky notifications — we can’t blame you for not wanting to “know how awesome you are” (Foursquare’s words).

Of course, this dips just ever so slightly into privacy concerns, and the fact that non-friends on Foursquare are able to like your check-ins and statuses, but we’re guessing that since these are people who are your friends on Facebook and Twitter, most users won’t really have a problem with it.

Foursquare recently made some privacy tweaks following the Instagram debacle last month. Foursquare made some changes to their privacy policy, which now says that the service will display users’ full names and giving businesses more customer data by default, though Foursquare points out that extra privacy can be restored with a few settings tweaks.
