Motorola DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD Jelly Bean update rolling out now

Keeping up with their promise from Friday, Motorola and Verizon have begun rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. Over-the-air update notifications are slowly hitting users’ devices, and new RAZR owners will finally be able to experience Project Butter, Google Now, and ISIS enhancements.

While Verizon simply said that update would hit sometime this week, we’re glad it’s happening first thing rather than later in the week on a Thursday or Friday. Either way, Verizon is pushing out the update “in phases,” so be patient if you haven’t yet seen the update hit your notification tray — it will come!

The Jelly Bean update comes with Google Now, which offers a Siri-like voice search experience that we really like, as well as Project Butter, which adds a layer of virtual butter to the user interface to make it snappier and smoother to navigate, as well as make it quicker to open up apps and switch between them effortlessly.

The DROID RAZR HD comes with a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display and runs on a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM. While the 2530mAh battery may be plenty for most users, Motorola launched the RAZR MAXX HD, which is practically identical to the RAZR HD, except for the larger 3300mAh battery for those who really want to last all day long.

NVIDIA releases GeForce 310.64 beta drivers aimed at Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 officially launches today in Australia, with the European release arriving tomorrow, and the US seeing the game next week on December 4. To celebrate the launch, NVIDIA has released a new beta version of its GeForce graphics drivers that come with some very specific improvements for the game.

NVIDIA has updated it’s 310.54 beta drivers to 310.64 beta, and while you may not think it’s a huge update, NVIDIA claims that the update will boost framerates in Far Cry 3 by up to 38% when using Nvidia’s latest GeForce 600-series graphics chips. That’s certainly nothing to scoff at, especially considering that you can get that kind of framerate boost for free.

The claim comes from NVIDIA’s own internal testing, which the company ran the game at a 1920×1080 resolution with graphics setting maxed out. The test system used an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme motherboard with an Intel Core i7-3960X processor clocked at 3.3 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 670, GTX 680 or GTX 690 depending on the test.

In addition to the Far Cry 3 improvements, the new beta drivers also include tweaks for Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Assassin’s Creed III, along with general performance tweaks that provide up to a 16% boost in games like Battlefield 3, Skyrim, and StarCraft II. The new beta drivers are available now to download on NVIDIA’s website.

GT Racing: Motor Academy gets 3 new Red Bull-themed cars

One of Gameloft’s popular mobile racing games, GT Racing: Motor Academy, is getting an update thanks to a partnership with Red Bull, which will see three new cars added to the game. The three cars are the F1 RB8 (F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel’s 2012 ride), the Camaro SS, and the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, all of which are plastered in Red Bull paint schemes.

Also, Gameloft and Red Bull Media House are partnering up and hosting an international contest that can be accessed directly through the new update in the game. Gamers all around the world will be able to compete against each other in different races, and the one with the best times will get two VIP tickets to a F1 Grand Prix.

Gonzague de Vallois, Senior Vice President of Publishing at Gameloft, says that the company is “thrilled to work with Red Bull Media House…Red Bull has been very active in the world of car racing for years, and we couldn’t be more excited to have one of our most popular racing simulations…associated with this leading brand.”

The video above shows off the three cars in action, and the update is rolling out today for the iPhone and iPad. Users who already own the game will see an update for it in their App Store app, while new users can download the game starting today that will already have the new Red Bull cars included.

Windows Phone 7.8 due in early 2013

Windows Phone 8 might be out in full force now, but the Windows Phone 7 series is still carrying on and will see an update to version 7.8 sometime early next year, according to Microsoft. The update will include resizable Live Tiles and new lock screen options. Microsoft says that the update will roll out “to as many devices as possible.”

Unfortunately, not all existing Windows Phone 7.5 handsets will receive the update, but most existing users can expect an update to version 7.8 that will bridge the gap between their device and new devices running Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system. WP7 users are upset as it is, since they won’t be able to get WP8 on their current devices, so it’s crucial that Microsoft roll out the update in a timely manner.

Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Phone, Terry Myerson, said that “new models running Windows Phone 7.8 are beginning to launch in many countries around the world,” which means that there will technically be Windows Phone 7.8 devices out in the wild, but the update for existing customers won’t be ready to roll out until early next year.

Other features of Windows Phone 7.8 include 20 new theme and accent colors, new lock screen features that can display the Bing Picture of the Day, and an “A1B2C3″ PIN/password challenge to prevent accidental device wipes on phones connected to Exchange accounts. While I’m sure most WP7 users would love to have WP8, WP7.8 seems to be a good compromise.

Skype for iOS updates with Microsoft account login, animated emoticons

After updating their Android app with Microsoft account login abilities, Skype is doing the same for its iOS app today. The company has issued an update for the app that follows along with their plans to merge Windows Live Messenger with Skype. Along with the Microsoft account login, the app adds animated emoticons and a few other welcomed additions that users will find useful.

Users are now able to login to the Skype app using either their Messenger, Hotmail, or Outlook.com credentials, and then merge their accounts once they’re in. Users can also chat with their friends who use any of these Microsoft services straight from Skype, thanks to the integrated Microsoft account support.

If you have an iOS device with a Retina display, you can now also enjoy animated emoticons. We’re not sure why Skype limited this new feature to only Retina displays, but if you’re using a last-gen iDevice, you’re stuck using the inanimate emoticons until you can upgrade, but it’s probably not a huge deal for most users.

The updated app also lets you set up a new Skype account from directly within the iOS app. It also allows you to edit instant messages you’ve sent to your friends by tapping and holding individual messages. And as usual, you’ll find that Skype also included a handful of bug fixes and general performance enhancements.

Skype for iOS is a free download, and the new update is available now in the iTunes App Store.

Amazon Appstore updates with new UI and bugfixes

Those who rely heavily on Amazon‘s Appstore for Android (especially for their Free App of the Day promo) will be pleased to know that the user interface got a facelift, and many of the annoying bugs that have been plaguing your experience with the app have now been fixed, including the multi-user login issue for Android 4.2 users.

The app has been updated to version 4.3.14.3C, and the user interface refresh is a welcome one. While we weren’t necessarily getting tired of the old interface, it’s nice to see that Amazon put a little more life into the app. The new UI of the Appstore looks similar to what you would experience on the Kindle Fire HD.

There’s also a much-needed Android 4.2 compatibility fix for the Amazon Appstore. In the past, switching user account on an Android 4.2 device would require you to log into the Appstore on each user account every time you switched, but this has now been remedied. Other bugs, including one that was responsible for battery drain, have been fixed as well.

If you don’t have access to the Google Play store, the Amazon Appstore app is a wonderful alternative. The update is available now on Amazon’s website, or you can go ahead and update it right from your device if you already have it installed. We have to say, the Amazon Appstore is worth it just for the Free App of the Day promo alone.

Skype 3.0 arrives on Android with Microsoft login and new tablet UI

Skype just released version 3.0 on Android, which brings its new Microsoft account login feature, as well a revamped Android user interface. Skype has optimized the new tablet UI for the Galaxy Tab 2, Nexus 7, the Transformer Prime from ASUS, and a few others. Menus and navigation have been redesigned to make use of the extra screen real estate, and while the home screen still exists on the phone version, your contact list will be front and center most of the time on a tablet.

However, we noticed that the new Skype update on the Nexus 7 is landscape only, and the camera is portrait style, meaning that the camera doesn’t use up as much of the screen as it could. Definitely a bummer indeed, but the update still brings a lot of new design tweaks to Android tablets, and we can’t complain too much about it.

Skype for Android 3.0 also brings support for the company’s audio codec, SILK. The codec was designed to improve sound specifically with the human voice, so that talking would sound more crisp and clear. The codec collaborates with your internet connection speed, so that the audio quality is optimized as much as it can be.

Overall, the new additions are welcomed, but we noticed the app ran a little too slow for our liking, especially when launching the app, since the splash screen stays on for a good 8-10 seconds. Either way, try it out for yourself. The Skype update is out now and it’s available at the Google Play store.

Google Drive gets Earth support, Gmail gets more search parameters

Google has pushed out some new features for Drive and Gmail, bringing in the likes of Google Earth support and additional search parameters. The updates were launched about an hour apart via the Google Drive blog and the Official Gmail Blog. Users of both services have access to the new features, no additional steps necessary.

Out of the five new features added to Google Drive, perhaps the best one is the support for Google Earth files. Users can now open .KML and .KMZ files directly in Drive. Once opened, the files can be previewed and interacted with. Google Earth files can be downloaded from a variety of websites and users, such as real-time earthquake files from the USGS.

The next feature is the ability to search by person, allowing users to find a file based on the person who shared it. In case you’re really having trouble remembering the who-when-what, the new feature auto-completes names as users type. The information is displayed in the drop-down menu that Google users are no doubt familiar with by now. In addition, search also includes results in Trash.

The last two Google Drive features allow users to create new folders while they are organizing files, speeding up the process and removing unnecessary steps. Users can drag and drop folders if they’re using Chrome browser. As for Gmail, users can now search emails by size (size:8mb, for example), as well as messages over a year old (older_than:1y).
