Motorola Xoom WiFi’s Jelly Bean upgrade arriving for regular users

Motorola Xoom WiFi Jelly Bean upgrade arriving for regular users

It looks like that test period was pretty short, as many Motorola Xoom WiFi owners who aren’t in the select test group are reporting receiving OTA updates to Android 4.1.1 on their tablets. That makes the Xoom the first 10-inch tablet to see Jelly Bean, and the first around these parts officially rocking it without Nexus in the nametag. We’ve already seen a changelog so assuming you have one of the slates, it’s probably time to mash that check for updates button.

[Thanks, @fdiazreal]

Apple to release OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion tomorrow

Apple just confirmed in its Q3 2012 earnings report that Mountain Lion is coming tomorrow. The hotly anticipated 10.8 version of OS X brings with it a host of new features, as we’ve expounded upon in the past. The upgrade will be just $19.99 (unless you’ve recently bought a new Mac — in which case it’ll be free) and will be available via download on the Mac App Store in 24 hours or less. Better start finding some disk space.

Vodafone walks us through a phone’s Android 4.0 upgrade, explains our protracted thumb-twiddling

Vodafone walks us through a phone's Android 40 upgrade, explains those long, long waits

We’re used to seemingly interminable waits for phone firmware upgrades for carrier-locked phones. What is it that takes so long? Vodafone UK isn’t promising a quicker process, but it’s offering a rare walkthrough of just what itself (and many other carriers) do to rubber stamp a firmware upgrade. Using the Huawei Ascend G 300’s Android 4.0 update as the reference point, Vodafone explains that the actual network testing lasts a week or less, depending on the scope of the upgrade — it’s the requirements for branding and carrier-specific network settings that introduce additional overhead. Android phones that skew closer to Google’s stock OS (like the G 300) tend to be easy updates, although Vodafone warns that the verification process is typically getting longer, not shorter. There’s not much consolation here for phone owners around the world still using Android 2.3; if you’d rather skip the carrier update process entirely, however, you know where to turn.

Jelly Bean now available to Nexus S via OTA download, we coat our phones in more sugar

Carriers begin feeding Jelly Bean to Nexus S, we coat our phones in more sugar

It’s already possible to force Android 4.1 onto your Nexus S without much trouble, but for those of you that prefer life on easy street, then kick up those heels: many carriers have now made Jelly Bean available for OTA installation. The good news comes from Google itself, which has listed T-Mobile, Three, Rogers and Vodafone among the carriers. It doesn’t stop there, however, as MobileSyrup also reports that Mobilicity and Wind users are also receiving a similar bit of Android 4.1 love. We’ve confirmed the rollout here in the US with T-Mobile, where the 114MB download is currently only available for download via WiFi. Seeing that it’s Friday night, seems like a perfect opportunity to take Google Now for a spin, no?

Rdio Android app updated with playlist, activity stream and search improvements, puts new releases in grid view

Much like its desktop counterpart, Rdio’s Android app is constantly being tweaked — adjusting its style, adding features and generally doing the whole mobile update dance. Among a slew of standard bug fixes, the streaming music service’s latest app update promises playlist editing improvements, including the ability to jump directly from a song in a playlist to its parent album, clickable activity stream URLs and more complete search results. The update boasts some user interface improvements as well, placing new releases in a grid view. Ready to upgrade? Hit up the Google Play at the source link below.

HTC ‘preparing’ Jelly Bean update for One XL and One S, no date yet

HTC 'preparing' Jelly Bean update for One XL and One S, no date yet

HTC has a long history of both raising and dashing hopes of Android upgrades on its devices. Moreover, the Australian network Telstra has often led that emotional rollercoaster, which means the detail on its software update page above is probably best approached with an air of detached calm. It tells us that both the HTC One XL (the global version of the American One X) and the One S have official Jelly Bean updates being “prepared” by HTC — which is slightly more specific than what we last heard on this subject, when the manufacturer said it was “excited” about Google’s latest OS version and planned to support it “across a variety” of handsets. If you happen to own a non-LTE, Tegra 3-based One X, then the absence of that handset on the list doesn’t mean much — that model simply isn’t part of the carrier’s line-up.

[Thanks, Will]

Raspberry Pi announces Raspbian, an optimized OS upgrade with performance improvements abound

Raspberry Pi announces Raspbian, an optimized OS upgrade with performance improvements aboundNo software update is quite so sweet as one that brings improved performance, and that’s exactly what Raspberry Pi users can expect from the latest Debian-based OS known as Raspbian. Optimized specifically for the $35 computer, Raspbian introduces more comprehensive support for floating point operations, and with that, a faster web browsing experience. The latest release also brings improvements to the firmware, kernel and applications, and is recommended as the distribution most appropriate for general users. An SD card image of Raspbian is now available for download, so do yourself a favor and snag it today.

Apple gives iPhone 3GS owners some love, lets them taste Shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail in iOS 6

iPhone 3GS back

Anyone who’s been scanning to see who gets what in iOS 6 has noticed that the iPhone 3GS is the red-headed stepchild of the family — some features that really don’t need a cutting-edge phone have been left on the chopping block. Apple is showing those owners some TLC, after all, by officially flicking on support for Shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail lists through the entire iOS 6-ready device list. With the exception of Safari’s Offline Reading List, the only features now left out for iPhone 3GS owners are the ones you’d expect to be excluded from a 3-year-old phone, such as FaceTime, Siri and those 3D-heavy map flyovers. While the iPhone 4S is still the darling of the lot, 3GS owners can now cling to their aging veteran phones a little more securely for at least another year.

Crucial ships mSATA-based m4 SSD upgrade, your Ultrabook never felt better

Crucial ships out mSATAbased m4 SSD upgrade, your Ultrabook never felt betterCrucial has already managed to stuff its m4 SSD into Ultrabook sizes, but the 7mm thick design may still be too portly for the thinner laptops in the pack. With that in mind, the flash memory guru has just started shipping the m4 mSATA, a barebones card that sits cozily next to the motherboard either as a cache for a rotating disk or as a main drive. It’s still as speedy as many of its bigger cousins, with read speeds of up to 500MB/s per second. We suspect most buyers will be lured in by the low prices: at just $53 for a cache-friendly 32GB SSD and no more than $226 for a 256GB example, it’s entirely feasible to give that spinning-drive Ultrabook a shot in the arm.
