LG Nitro HD owners will get be able to end their July right by upgrading their handsets to Android 4.0. AT&T announced today via its blog that the 4.5-inch smartphone will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich on Tuesday, along with access to LG’s Optimus 3.0 UI, the latter of which offers up improved swipe-to-unlock, more display customization and a new download category in the phone’s menu. AT&T’s not stopping the upgrade train at LG station, though — it’s also promised updates for the HTC One X and Inspire that should help bump up performance.

Apple just confirmed in its Q3 2012 earnings report that Mountain Lion is coming tomorrow. The hotly anticipated 10.8 version of OS X brings with it a host of new features, as we’ve expounded upon in the past. The upgrade will be just $19.99 (unless you’ve recently bought a new Mac — in which case it’ll be free) and will be available via download on the Mac App Store in 24 hours or less. Better start finding some disk space.

It’s already possible to force Android 4.1 onto your Nexus S without much trouble, but for those of you that prefer life on easy street, then kick up those heels: many carriers have now made Jelly Bean available for OTA installation. The good news comes from Google itself, which has listed T-Mobile, Three, Rogers and Vodafone among the carriers. It doesn’t stop there, however, as MobileSyrup also reports that Mobilicity and Wind users are also receiving a similar bit of Android 4.1 love. We’ve confirmed the rollout here in the US with T-Mobile, where the 114MB download is currently only available for download via WiFi. Seeing that it’s Friday night, seems like a perfect opportunity to take Google Now for a spin, no?

HTC has a long history of both raising and dashing hopes of Android upgrades on its devices. Moreover, the Australian network Telstra has often led that emotional rollercoaster, which means the detail on its software update page above is probably best approached with an air of detached calm. It tells us that both the HTC One XL (the global version of the American One X) and the One S have official Jelly Bean updates being “prepared” by HTC — which is slightly more specific than what we last heard on this subject, when the manufacturer said it was “excited” about Google’s latest OS version and planned to support it “across a variety” of handsets. If you happen to own a non-LTE, Tegra 3-based One X, then the absence of that handset on the list doesn’t mean much — that model simply isn’t part of the carrier’s line-up.

Anyone who’s been scanning to see who gets what in iOS 6 has noticed that the iPhone 3GS is the red-headed stepchild of the family — some features that really don’t need a cutting-edge phone have been left on the chopping block. Apple is showing those owners some TLC, after all, by officially flicking on support for Shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail lists through the entire iOS 6-ready device list. With the exception of Safari’s Offline Reading List, the only features now left out for iPhone 3GS owners are the ones you’d expect to be excluded from a 3-year-old phone, such as FaceTime, Siri and those 3D-heavy map flyovers. While the iPhone 4S is still the darling of the lot, 3GS owners can now cling to their aging veteran phones a little more securely for at least another year.
