Urbanears Plattan Tweed Headphones: The Retro Executive Headphones

You have to give it to Urbanears, their headphones are really distinctive, so much that I almost bought a pair without finding out how they sounded. This Plattan Tweed Edition is part of the Urbanears Editions range, and once again, these look pretty spiffy.

The Urbanears Plattan Tweed Edition headphones are enveloped in hand-woven Harris Tweed, which is made out of 100% virgin wool. They have brown ear caps, and a brown textile cord with a Kevlar core, so it won’t end up all twisted. These headphones are pretty interesting, and will nicely match any Harris Tweed clothes you might have.

There is a plug to share music with a friend, who will need to use his or her own headphones. These headphones sell for $80 (USD), but unfortunately, they are currently sold out. For now, be sure to check out the additional styles of Plattan headphones over on the Urbanears website.

Plattan Tweed Edition headphones

Urbanears has just announced their third pair of headphones to come under the Urbanears Editions range, calling it the Plattan Tweed Edition headphones where it will retail for $80 per pair. The Plattan Tweed Edition headphones comes enveloped in hand-woven Harris Tweed, and you know that it is going to be a luxurious experience considering how it is made from 100 percent virgin wool. Boasting brown ear-caps, a brown textile cord with Kevlar core so that you need not worry about the entire shebang ending up in a twisted mess, as well as orange accents, the Plattan Tweed Edition headphones is definitely a thing of beauty. On the inside of the headband, you will discover a level of authenticity for those who are concerned with their public image via a hand sewn Harris Tweed label.

You can fold down the Plattan Tweed Edition headphones to the size of your fist for maximum portability, and there is also the Zound Plug feature on one of the ear-caps, enabling you to share whatever you are listening to at that moment with another friend. He or she will need to bring his or her own pair of headphones though, so be warned.

Marshall’s Hanwell HiFi speaker is bred from guitar amps, at-home with your PMP

Marshall's Hanwell HiFi speaker bred from guitar amps, made to pump out

It’s been a year since the legendary guitar amp and speaker makers at Marshall Amplification made a splash in consumer audio with its Marshall Headphones spin-off (Zound / Urbanears). In commemorence of the amplification division’s 50th aniversary, both have announced the Hanwell: Marshall’s first speaker rig that’s made for a counter-top instead of a festival stage. Combo guitar amp / speaker meets HiFi speaker. Most anyone who plays guitar, or has seen the likes of Slash and Nigel Tufnel shredding it up, will immediately recognize the iconic Marshall design ethic down to its iconic plastic nameplate on the front grill and gold accents.

There’s no major tech at play inside of the system, but with looks this cool it’s not like it matters — hopefully, the sound quality will match. Up top there’s a familiar panel housing a 3.5mm input, power toggle and knobs for bass, treble and volume, while internally you’ll find a duo of long-throw woofers and tweeters. The cab itself is made from wood and wrapped in black vinyl tolex like its bigger JCM siblings — heck, it even comes with a coiled audio cable. There’s no specific information beyond all of that such as pricing and availability — especially whether “these go to 11” — but you’ll find a press release and close-up shots after the break.

The Zinken on-ear headphones are equipped with a pair of 40mm dual diaphragm drivers, producing a frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz with an impedance of 85? and a max input power of 50mW. Zinken headphones from Urbanears

Urbanears claim that their most ambitious headphone to date would be the Zinken pair of headphones – which is said to be a brand new approach to the concept of a headphone that sees it function as a musical instrument. It was specially developed with the professional DJ in mind, although there is a caveat to this – it will pay adequate respect to the wallet of the amateur. Basically, I am saying that that you will get the best bang for your buck with the purchase of a Zinken, where we will explore its fair share of features such as the TurnCable and the ZoundPlug in the extended post.

Let us take a look at the TurnCable first. Originally constructed with a rugged Kevlar within, the TurnCable boasts of a 6.3mm plug that can be used with a mixer, in addition to a 3.5mm for mobile devices that range from phones to MP3 players, although I do wonder who uses the latter any more these days. The TurnCable also boasts of a coiled section that gives you the freedom to move without requiring to disrupt the sound that comes from your headphones.

As for the ZoundPlug, this was originally featured on the Urbanears Plattan headphone, where the ZoundPlug might point towards a plug, but rather, it is an audio output socket which enables another person to share exactly what you are listening to at that point in time through plugging in to the ZoundPlug.

To sum it up, the Zinken headphones was specially designed to be ultra wearable kind of headphone which can basically be worn for hours on end at a time without you ending up with a case of extremely hot ears. Not only that, it will come with a padded headband as well as comfortable ear cushions to deliver a longer period of wearability. In addition, the increased foam density of the ear cushions will enable you to achieve far superior noise isolation, with the swivel ear cups enabling you to adjust your playing style.

Urbanears is also mindful enough to work with materials which do not absorb odors and sweat, definitely a good idea for those moments when you are enjoying marathon listening sessions. The asking price for the Zinken as it arrives in the full-range of Urbanears colors would stand at $140 a pop.

It was specially developed with the professional DJ in mind, although it will not break the bank in any way whatsoever, delivering a bunch of useful features including the TurnCable and the ZoundPlug. The TurnCable was specially built with a rugged Kevlar within, where it features a 6.3mm plug that can be used with a mixer, in addition to a 3.5mm plug that caters for mobile devices. Not only that, there is a coiled section that offers you the freedom to move without having to disrupt the sound that comes from your headphones.

As for the ZoundPlug, this was first featured on the Urbanears Plattan headphone. Unlike its name suggests, the ZoundPlug is not a real plug, but instead is an audio output socket which enables a different person to plug in and listen to whatever you are currently listening to. Specially designed to be an ultra wearable device, this headphone can be worn for hours on end without leaving your ears feeling uncomfortable. The Zinken will retail for $140.
