Table Lamp with Charging Station or Power Strip with Bulb?

There are two ways to solve the problems posed by the short cables in gadget chargers – we can either get longer cables or get more accessible outlets. Etsy artist Jordan Waters makes the latter: a table lamp that’s equipped with USB ports as well as an AC outlet. I’d call it high-tech, but then it uses a conventional bulb as a light source.

You can order the lamp from Waters’ Boss Lamps Etsy shop. It comes in a variety of designs and has two versions: the single charging station pictured above sells for $95 (USD), while the dual charging station – which has a total of 4 USB ports and two outlets – sells for $125.

Aladdin USB Key Makes Passwords Easier to Use (and Steal)

Passwords are one of the weakest links of online security. Or rather, people who have weak passwords are the weakest links. I personally know of a couple of people who use dead simple passwords because they’re afraid that if they use more secure but more complex ones that they’ll just forget those and end up locking themselves out of their own accounts. That’s the problem that the Aladdin is designed to solve.

aladdin usb key password keyboard by alvin chang

Invented by Alvin Chang, the Aladdin is a small USB device that generates a random password and types it for you by emulating a USB keyboard. Used in the simplest way, it really does work like a physical key: plug it into your computer and it unlocks your account. But for those who want added security, you can also modify – and re-use – the alphanumeric string generated by Aladdin by adding or subtracting characters from it. Skip to about 1:20 in the video below for the demo:

Note that there are free software alternatives to managing secure passwords such as LastPass and KeePass. Then there’s the security risk of losing the Aladdin or having it stolen from you. But if you just want to get in your Facebook account the same way you get in your house, pledge at least $20 (USD) on its Indiegogo fundraiser to reserve an Aladdin.

Eton FRX3 hand turbine Radio and USB Charger Review

It’s time to get ready for the inevitable zombie apocalypse now that we’ve passed by the Mayan end of the universe – what better way to do it than with your own self-chargeable AM/FM/NOAA weather ALERT radio, USB smart phone charger, and LED flashlight. This machine goes by the name Eton FRX3 and comes in two fashionably powerful shades: black/gray/yellow and red/gray. Up top you’ve got a solar charging panel, on the side you’ve got a hand-crank turbine, and on the inside you’ve got both a place for batteries of your own and the single rechargeable Ni-MH pack you’ll be pumping up with the crank.

20121222_1551080000

This machine is made to be rugged, prepared to stick with you be it in your own home for an emergency or out along with you camping. You’ve got connectivity with radio along AM and FM as well as all seven NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather band stations – and an “Alert” system to boot! This “Alert” function, when activated, automatically has your unit broadcasting emergency weather alerts from your area.

20121222_155458

The turbine is quoted as giving between 10 and 15 minutes of radio and flashlight use per one minute cranked – and we’ve generally found that to be entirely accurate. If you’re in an area where you’ve got your own supply of AAA batteries, you can feel free to use those too – and if you’ve got a wall socket, this machine takes in DC power via mini-USB. This machine also has the ability to “dump charge” your smartphone with its own USB port – plug your own microUSB cord in and let it pump up!

20121222_155433

You’ve got the ability to play the radio stations as a standard radio would or you can choose to play tunes through the machine’s AUX-input. This means that if you’ve got your smartphone and an audio cord, you can plug in and blast the tunes out through the FRX3 like a pro! There’s also a 3-LED flashlight that can shine straight-up white or blink red, and all of the buttons around the entire device are illuminated. The area around the solar power panel is also glow-in-the-dark.

20121222_155416

You’ve got a small display in the center of all this that shows you what you’ve got turned on or off, which radio station you’ve got on, and if you’ve got an alarm set up – yes indeed you can set this machine up to be your alarm clock, too. The display is back-lit so you can see it in the dark, and the whole device measures in at 7.875 H x 7 W x 3.5-inch D. You can pick this machine up at fine electronics stores near you for right around $60 USD, and it’s worth every penny.

30-pin Lightning combo docks coming soon as Apple tweaks spec

It’s time to get your transitional period on with an update the the specifications accessory makers much follows in order to get official support from Apple. In the wake of an issue with having both the Lightning cable and the legacy 30-pin connector working on one device, Apple has come forth with a tweak to the rules. While it’s not entirely clear if it was the POP Kickstarter incident from earlier this week that made this change in Apple’s policies a reality, the result is clear: you’ll be able to work with a single accessory in the future with both types of connectors, no sweat.

iPhone-5-hands-on-slashgear-109-580x456

Word of an update to the policies Apple has for accessories working with their mobile devices came down today via CNET where Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr made just the past crystal clear. The actual “we’ve changed” part of the equation was left to the author to elaborate on himself with a simple “the company added that the guidelines have since been updated.” Neumayr spoke thusly:

“Our technical specifications provide clear guidelines for developing accessories and they are available to MFi licensees for free. We support accessories that integrate USB and Lightning connectors, but there were technical issues that prevented accessories from integrating 30-pin and Lightning connectors so our guidelines did not allow this.” – Neumayr

What we’re talking about here is not Apple telling the world that they may not have cords coming from devices with the Lightning connector as well as the 30-pin iPod connector in one, but that if they do, they’ll not be speaking kindly with them any time soon. Accessory makers around the world speak with Apple on a regular basis to get official licenses from the company so that they can get approval for the cords Apple designed. With the dawn of the Lightning cable, many accessory makers had to re-think their entire iDevice strategy.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see some of the brief history of the Lightning connector and make sure you’ve got your eyes open for the first dual-connector accessories in the very, very near future. Expect some Apple-approved dual-wielding docks by the middle of 2013, without a doubt.

Blue Microphones Spark Digital review a solid iOS USB mic for recording on the go

It was all the way back in January, when Blue Microphones made its CES announcements, that the Spark Digital first broke cover alongside two other mobile recording devices. Our interest was immediately piqued thanks to the mic’s USB 2.0 and iOS connectivity, which allows it to support the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch via the 30-pin jack. After a grueling wait that lasted until just a few weeks ago, Blue’s latest offering finally arrived. Was the long wait worth it? Does the Spark Digital do its part to bolster Blue Microphones’ reputation for stellar recording wares? Join us past the break as we put the peripheral through its paces and give you answers to those very queries.

TDKR Flash Drive: When Your Files are Copied, You Have My Permission to Open Them

If you’re a comic book geek or love Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies, get your wallet out. A company called Infothink has created a new Batman flash drive based on The Dark Knight Rises, and it looks pretty cool.

The flash drive and its dock look like a bust of Batman in his black armor. Batman’s head separates from the body and has 16 GB of flash storage inside. The bat logo glows when the chest and neck portion of the flash drive is plugged into a USB port, as do Batman’s eyes when the flash drive section is plugged in. The flash drive has 16 GB of storage, and each one has an individual serial number with an RFID tag that can be read by smartphones with NFC support.

This is an officially-licensed DC Comics collectible, and it’s not cheap, selling for $86.99(USD).
