Fender unveils Squier USB Stratocaster that talks to iOS, lends cred to iPad jam sessions (video)
Posted in: Today's ChiliThere’s no shortage of instruments and peripherals to make GarageBand sing on iOS gear. Anyone jonesing for well-known instruments has had few options, however, which makes Fender’s launch of a USB-capable Squier Stratocaster something of a watershed moment. While it can plug into any quarter-inch jack or a computer’s full USB port, the extremely familiar electric guitar will strum its notes directly into any older iPad, iPhone or iPod touch through a pre-supplied 30-pin cable; yes, you’ll need a pricey adapter to rock out on an iPad mini. All the familiar controls and outputs you’d anticipate are present, including a 3.5mm headphone jack for some quiet practice in the den. Fender’s $200 price puts the USB Squier well within reach of mobile musicians — we just wish other guitar makers would follow suit.

Simpsons Flash Drives: USB D.Oh
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you’re like me, you’re probably starting to amass a collection of flash drives that’s as big as that stack of AOL CDs you had back in the 1990s. But fans of The Simpsons will have to run out immediately and add to their flash drive collection with these fun new storage devices from USBTribe.
The officially-licensed series of keychain flash drives includes big-headed versions of Marge, Lisa, Bart and Homer, cast out of soft rubber. While they only store 8GB of data each, you’re not buying these for the capacity anyhow. In case you’re wondering where the drive is stored, it’s in the head of each of the characters, though I assume that the Homer one is a bit more forgetful than most memory devices.
Simpsons collectors can grab them now over at USBTribe for €19.90 (~$25 USD) each. Now where’s my Ned Flanders and Krusty the Clown drives?
The Simpsons USB flash drives
Posted in: Today's ChiliAmerica’s most dysfunctional cartoon family, the Simpsons, is definitely one of my favorite cartoon series to date – and for good reason, of course. The offbeat humor, parody of certain real life characters and situations, and generally the script as well as storyline with characters who seem absolutely real and alive did it for me. I am quite sure the merchandise juggernaut for the Simpsons is a force not to be trifled with, and here we are with the latest edition of The Simpsons USB flash drives.
This new collection of USB flash drives depict all immediate family of the Simpsons – including Homer, Marge, Lisa, and of course, Bart the man, and are produced by Italian company Tribe. Somehow, the size proportion does seem to be a wee bit off compared to the original cartoon characters to me, but it could be just last night’s late night out that has caused me to have less than perfect eyesight and judgment this morning. What do you think – are you willing to fork out your hard earned money for more USB flash drives that you know you will never use, but rather, will display on the desk or display cabinet instead?

VMUltra Drive Adds DVD Burner, Hard Drive, USB Ports and SD Reader: The Ultrabook Sidekick
Posted in: Today's ChiliHaving a slim and lightweight laptop is great for your back, but the hardware that it’s missing could be bad for your productivity. If you’re missing some of the bells and whistles of your desktop computer, PC and tablet maker Velocity Micro has got your back with the VMUltra Drive.
Short of a beefier CPU and GPU, the VMUltra Drive is basically everything that’s been cut out of traditional laptops to make the so-called Ultrabooks. In exchange for taking up a USB 3.0 port, this peripheral will give you an 8x DVD±R/RW burner and reader, two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port, an SD/SDHC/MMC reader and a hard drive bay that fits 2.5″ SATA drives. As if that wasn’t enough, it comes with a 500GB installed in the bay.
You can see more images of the VMUltra Drive on The Verge, but if you’re already throwing money at the screen – I’m keeping some of it! – head to Velocity Micro and pre-order the gadget for $200 (USD).

The meteorite-made Apophis USB 3.0 flash drive will cost you more than $1,000
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhen it comes to USB flash drives, it’s one of those things that is hard to be picky about. After all it’s just a storage device that lets you store data in a small form factor, letting you bring it with you to work, to school and etc. However it seems that there might be some people in the world who believe that the USB flash drive could be a possible fashion accessory, to the extent where it could even double as jewelry. If you agree with the latter sentiment, the folks at ZaNa Design have come up with a luxury USB flash drive called Apophis.
According to the company, this USB flash drive is made out authentic and certified meteorite and features a high-purity diamond embedded in it. The rest of the USB flash drive is made from African Black Wood, a material which apparently is considered to be the most luxurious wood in the world, and 925 silver and 18-carat gold. As far as the USB specs are concerned, thankfully it comes with USB 3.0 with 64GB of storage space along with a lifetime guarantee. So how much will the Apophis USB flash drive cost you? A staggering $1,990 for the gold version (pictured above) and $1,130 for the silver version.

LaCie has unveiled its newest key-shaped flash drive, the PetiteKey. This USB drive is 30-percent smaller than its predecessor, the iamaKey, making it easier to carry on a key ring. In addition to being stealthy, the drive also offers Private-Public encryption to keep files safe and one year of Wuala Secure Cloud Storage.
The PetiteKey offers several features, including being waterproof up to 100-meters, something that’s perhaps most convenient for those times your keys find their way into the washing machine. The connector is scratch-resistant, a necessary feature due to both the drive’s cap-free end and its perilous life on a key ring. The PetiteKey offers USB 2.0 connectivity.
Bundled with the PetiteKey are two extra services: Private-Public, and Wuala Secure Cloud Storage. Private-Public is encryption software allowing users to protect their files with AES 256-bit security and a password. Wuala Secure Cloud Storage is included for one-year, and provides an online account for users to store their data.
The drive is available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities, and is priced at $14.99, $22.99, and $39.99. You can pick up the USB drive from LaCie’s online store, or via one of the company’s partners. LaCie is a manufacturer of storage devices, and operates in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Apple users working with their untouchable Mac computers will be pumped up to see that Mimo Monitors have brought forth a brand new USB powered-and-connected 10.1-inch monitor that works with OS X like a charm! This Mimo Magic Touch monitor is the first of many models that’ll be offered by Mimo Monitors ready to rock with OS X with just a download of a special driver. This model also works with Windows 7 and can be used as a display-only unit for Windows XP, Vista, and 2000.
The Mimo Magic Touch is the first model released by Mimo Monitors to be assured readiness to work with the official Mac OS X Touchscreen Driver distributed by Mimo Monitors as well. This driver works with Intel Macs only and is compatible with systems up to and including OS X Mountain Lion. The driver, incidentally, is an alpha release – but once the final version is ready for action, you’ll get that upgrade for free.
The folks at Mimo Monitors note that “that this software is proprietary and we cannot provide it without charging this nominal license fee.” This is why it’s not free, if you’d like to know. You’ll also get a free downloadable “Gesture Pack” that allows two-finger scroll, pinch / magnify, and rotate gestures galore. You can also download a “trial version” of the software from Mimo Monitors once you’ve got the Mimo Magic Touch if you’d like to be sure you actually want to work with it, too.
The Mimo Magic Touch is also a lovely touchscreen monitor on its own, working with Windows 7 with full touchscreen capabilities with a 1024 x 600 resolution display, an adjustable dock/bast, and connects with USB 2.0. This unit needs to be connected with a USB cord in order to function, but requires JUST the USB cord and no additional display cords to work. Neat stuff! You’ll be picking up the monitor for $299.99 and the driver for $35.00 USD.

Outdated USB Collector concept
Posted in: Today's ChiliI am quite sure that you would have collected your fair share of USB flash drives by now, attending many press conferences and roadshows where prospectus and flyers now come in the digital format instead of on some high quality paper. Well, designers Lee Seungmin and Jin Juhyun decided that this particular collection of USB flash drives could be put to better use – by coming up with the concept that they have dubbed the Outdated USB Collector. The whole idea of the Outdated USB Collector is this – you use your old USB flash drives and dock them onto this concept, and they will use their collective storage space as one. By far a better idea compared to throwing away those 1GB and 2GB USB flash drives, don’t you think so? Of course, we do wonder what you are going to do with that 64MB USB flash drive of yours…
In front of the Outdated USB Collector, there will be a LCD display that is constantly updated, showing you just how much free storage space there is left. Should you run out of available memory, all you need to do is plug in a different USB flash drive (of larger capacity, obviously), and the situation should be settled.
