FXI Cotton Candy PC and Android-on-a-stick now shipping

We’ve heard about the FXI Cotton Candy a lot over the past year, but it still hasn’t made it into the hands of users and developers. First detailed last year, we then received some hands-on back in February with the Android powered USB stick. Today however, we’ve learned this PC and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on a thumb drive is shipping now for just $199.

The Cotton Candy has seen various delays, improvements, design changes and more. We’ve seen tons of lower quality and cheaper alternatives appear on the market in their absence, but they’re finally ready to start shipping. Originally it was set to hit the market in March, but later that turned into May for developers and now it looks like the public can get their hands on these little miniature devices.

The new and improved Cotton Candy is still the size of a pack of gum, only the design is seriously improved. You’ll get a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU, ARM Mali-400MP GPU, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and a micro-SD slot. On each side are the ports consisting of USB and HDMI-out for all types of use. Streaming movies, Android, Games and more to a display and hooking up wireless mice and more. The options are pretty limitless.

It currently runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and we might even see Jelly Bean, as well as other Linux-based operating systems. The device doesn’t support the Google Play Store either — so that’s a thing. FXI is alerting those two pre-ordered that devices are shipping now, and they’ll end the pre-order status for full store access starting October 1st. More details can be found at their website.

Truck-Shaped Media Player: Looks Like We’ve Got Us a Convoy

Growing up back in the 1970s, during the height of the C.B. radio craze, the U.S. had truly romanticized the life of the trucker. Between movies like Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit, kids were aspiring to take to the open road and drive an 18-wheeler. Or not. If you still long for the trucker lifestyle while you sit at your MacBook and sip lattes, then you might want to grab one of these.

truck media player

It’s a media player that’s shaped like the cab of a tiny truck – minus the cargo. I can only imagine a tiny little guy inside there, chatting away on his C.B. (or more likely inviting skanky hookers inside at every truckstop.) Other than its truck looks, this media player is nothing special. It’s can read microSD cards and USB flash drives, and plays MP3 and WMA files. It also has an FM radio built in, and a small speaker. But you’re not buying this thing for the technology, are you?

You can grab the Truck Media Player over at USBGeek for $27(USD). 10-4, good buddy?

LaCie’s Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt: fast portable storage that can take a beating

LaCie's Rugged USB 30 Thunderbolt fast portable storage that can take a beating

LaCie’s no stranger to kicking out portable HDDs that are a-okay with getting kicked around, and the Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series is no exception. As the extended title implies, this one is equipped to transfer files via USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt, and it’ll play nice with Mac and Windows platforms. The LaCie Rugged SSD offers up transfer rates as high as 380MB/sec — a feat we came darn close to hitting ourselves in testing — and the HDD variants claim up to 110MB/sec. The bantam drive is entirely bus-powered, and it’s engineered to shake off drops of up to four feet. Interesting? Both models should be shipping shortly, with the 1TB HDD edition going for $249.99 and the 120GB SSDer for $199.99.

Sony announces new external batteries for smartphones and tablets

Sony announced on Monday that it will introduce a new line of external batteries for smartphones and tablets. Shipping in capacities of 3,500 to 7,000mAh, these external juice boxes weigh around 198 grams and measure 130.6mm by 12.9mm, making them about the size of a modern smartphone. Charging devices via USB, Sony claims that these portable pick me ups can be recharged up to 500 times and can charge most smartphones in an hour and a half. If toting another smartphone-like device around doesn’t sound ideal to you, Sony will also be releasing smaller “stick-type” (think flash drives) external batteries in assorted colors. Both battery types are set to launch this fall, with prices ranging from 2,300 yen ($30) to 7,000 yen ($90). Wouldn’t it just be easier to sell a marginally thicker phone with world-class battery life? A boy can dream

ApelPi Opso Batteries Let You Juice Your Android with an Apple

I’ve seen plenty of supplemental batteries for mobile gadgets, but they’re usually just rectangular bricks without any particular style about them. The guys over at Apel-π (pronounced “apple pie”, of course) decided to do something about it, by releasing a line of external batteries that look like a slice of Apple.

Rohm, together with Aqua Fairy and Kyoto University, has developed a compact, high-output hydrogen fuel cell.
This fuel cell generates electricity by producing hydrogen on the spot. This is achieved through a chemical reaction between calcium hydride sheets and water.
From a sheet with volume of less than 3 cc, this fuel cell can generate 5 Whr of electricity. It can be used for many purposes, from charging a smartphone, to providing back-up power in emergencies.
