Whether it’s a tropical vision quest, or a summer jaunt in Europe, the well-traveled gadgeteer faces one eternal scourge — power. Timbuk2 hears this, and has partnered with Joey Energy to bring you two new travel bags (the Power Commute and Power Q) with internal chargers. Okay, you don’t need to have the crunch of sand underfoot to benefit from one of these, in fact, dashing across town will also be a much more liberated affair, knowing that you don’t need benevolent weather, or have to pack a dedicated device. The power supply has been designed to deal with the rough and tumble of the outside world, and claims to power pretty much anything that charges over USB. The Joey T1 claims to be able to provide about two full mobile charges, and both of the new bags come laden with all the tech-hiding covey holes you’d expect, costing $199 when they launch in October.
The Blue Tiki is claimed to be the world’s first USB microphone. The gadget is ideal for Skype users, podcasters or musicians. The Blue Tiki USB microphone will be released on July 15th, 2012 for $59.95 a pop. [Product Page]
Now here is something that brings together the old and new under a single roof – with the Ultra-Portable USB Turntable, of course. You can choose from two flavors – the £49.99 LP 2 GO or the £59.99 Duo Deck. Regardless of your choice, both of them were specially designed with easy transport in mind, making them an extremely portable version of the turntable.
The tone-arm can itself can be locked into place whenever you are up and about, and as there is no large platter that can be found on conventional turntables, it is capable of slipping easily into a backpack or a drawer without missing a beat. Other hardware specifications include an integrated speaker, a 1/8” external jack and can be powered by either being plugged in to the mains, a USB port, or the old standby – batteries.
If you want to fool people into thinking you drive a BMW or you just like the idea of owning a key that looks like it unlocks a Bimmer, you’re in luck. BMW has just released a USB flash drive that is designed to look like a BMW key. To extend or retract the USB connector – just hit the trunk button. The other buttons serve no purpose other than to make it look realistic. A pretty cool flash drive that I don’t mind having in my collection. The BMW USB key comes with 8GB of storage and a USB extension cable for computers with hard to reach slots. Pick one up on BMW’s website for $38 apiece.
We’re fans of Blue Microphones, with the company churning out good quality products like the Snowball and Yeti mics. The company demoed a smaller, more portable USB mic at CES that would plug into laptops and provide noise cancellation so that you could hold a conversation in a busy environment, and that microphone is now shipping. Blue says the mic contains proprietary noise cancellation technology that will isolate your voice and reduce background noise accordingly.
There are two modes for the microphone: Intelligent Speech Mode and Natural Recording Mode. The first outlines what’s described above, reducing background noise for voice calls or recordings, while Natural mode will act as a standard high quality USB mic that will record audio up to “CD-quality.” The size of the mic is pretty small too, plugging into your USB port directly and not requiring any additional cables.
Like Blue’s other mics, you don’t need any drivers for the mic, so you can just plug it in and start recording straight away. The Tiki will cost $59.99 and is available in Best Buy stores right now. Blue says you’ll be able to purchase one from Apple and other retailers worldwide starting from July 15th.
Almost as a dare, Shoryuken (SRK) challenged its fans to produce a fighting game-style controller for Starcraft II. Mauricio Romano took them up on that contest and won with a surprisingly polished arcade stick of his own. Its cornerstone is a heavily modified Ultrastik joystick that’s turned into an on-controller, two-button mouse. You didn’t think a PC gamer would cling to a plain joystick, did you? In the process, the usual 101 keys of a typical keyboard have been pared down to a set of 26 buttons most relevant for Blizzard’s real-time strategy epic. Packaged up in a single, polished USB peripheral, the one-off prototype’s design is good enough to imagine a Major League Gaming pro taking it out on the road. We’d put that idea on ice for now, though: as Mauricio shows in the video below, the learning curve is steep enough that most players won’t be fending off diamond-league marine and zergling blitzes anytime soon.
Remember that miniature USB mic we saw back at CES from Blue? Well, the outfit just announced that the Tiki is hitting store shelves with the same $59.99 price tag we expected. The mobile recording peripheral is now available at Best Buy and is slated to hit Apple stores and other retailers at the month’s half-way point. In case you’re in need of a refresher, the diminutive unit features Intelligent Speech mode for recording interviews or meetings and Natural Recording mode for capturing your best Jack White guitar riffs. You can also expect proprietary noise cancelling technology, voice isolation and intelligent mute with the kit that is sized similar to a USB flash drive and connects via said ports. If you’re itchin’ for a closer look before adding one to your mobile recording setup, take a peek back at our hands-on for a few detail shots.
It’s time to take a look at Jabra‘s newest effort with the Supreme UC, a bluetooth headset that’s made not just for your home computer, not just your smartphone and tablet, but both! This device is priced at a premium $149.99 and is crafted to make you love that you’ve just exchanged such a sum for great sound. It’s got a completely collapsable chassis, comes with a carrying case as well as an extra earpiece, and works with a universally acceptable micro USB for power.
You’ve got a single button on the boom for basic voice controls, a giant multifunction button on the facade of the unit, and two volume buttons at the back surrounding the covered micro USB port. The device is an extremely high quality piece of hardware by all outward appearances, and it is rather comfortable to wear. Be sure to check out our hands-on with the Supreme UC from earlier this year – the main man himself gives an introduction!
This device is not designed for an extremely active person. Try to do a couple of flips or go for a jog and you’ll find yourself wishing you had a bit more of a firm grip around your lobe. If you’re the type of person to sit at your desk all day long or to walk without bobbing your head uncontrollably, you’ll have a perfectly well-suited device on your head. The design of this device also allows for left or right-eared users, with a hook attachment able to work with the earpiece on either side.
Folding the boom in turns the device off, folding it back out turns it back on, and pairing with any number of devices is quite simple. The device is automatically in pairing mode the first time you turn it on, and from that point forward you’ve only to tap the multifunction button and say, “pair new device” and you’ll be ready to go.
The sound quality is certainly decent on its own with any device, but really shines when you’re using your Jabra Connect Android app where you’ll have the choice of several voice cancellation and sound profiles. Sound on the other end of the phone is superb, even in the middle of a coffee shop packed to the brim with hipsters. The person you’re calling will think you’re in an empty room when you’re chatting with them with the Jabra Supreme UC.
Wrap-Up
It’s difficult to consider spending $150 on a headset when you could just pull your phone out of your pocket instead in most situations, but here’s the killer feature: the USB dongle that comes with the device will allow you to completely skip buying a second unit. The Jabra Supreme UC replaces your in-office headset as well as your mobile headset in one swoop. With excellent sound quality for you (the best if you’re on Android) as well as great sound quality and noise cancellation for the person you’re speaking with, the Jabra Supreme UC might just be the buy for you.
Grab this device at any number of local retailers near you and online. This device is going to be available worldwide immediately if not soon, to get to it!
There seems to be a growing trend of having a USB dongle device which, when plugged into your TV’s USB port, will be able to deliver a decent amount of computing power so that you can “work” on your TV as though it were a desktop. Well, the Rikomagic MK802 PC-on-a-stick which should not cost anything more than $80 a pop comes with an Allwinner A10 single core processor, a solitary USB port, a mini USB port, a mini HDMI port, and a microSD card slot. The manufacturer behind this claims that the next generation version, the aptly named MK802 II, will sport a full-sized HDMI connector, in addition to a trio of USB ports, now how about that?
The full sized HDMI connector would mean you can plug this straight into your TV without another ugly cable dangling about in your living room, while the two micro and solitary standard sized USB ports increase your connectivity options when glued to the TV. It seems that the sequel will retain the Allwinner A10 processor and Mali 400 graphics, while running on Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.
